Possibly the most steampunk looking vehicle that's not modified to change it's aesthetics ever

I don't know what I would do with this machine, but I want one.

Good to be able to give credit where credit is due for continuous tracks.

And a few years we had narrow gauge panels of track of set geometry, a bit like a 1:1 scale model railway track, in use behind the British front lines in France during WW1

They also had the mark vi tank, I wouldn't be surprised if these machines weren't part of the inspiration for early tank designs.

@@danielkingshott2659 IIRC the tank tracks were inspired by those of the Holt tractor, which used, under licence, Lombard's track.

Hi DD. Fascinating. If only they had thought of braking the individual tracks as on the caterpillars - quite possible once a differential is installed ..... still, I guess that was the innervation that made Caterpillar's tractors viable so it was evolution.

There is another one in New Hampshire that runs.

The differential on the tracks would certainly aid the steering but with the knowledge of non-continuously braked railway wagons (and the necessity to pin down brakes on inclines), the thought of heavy, unbraked log carts behind, pushing the engine. fills me with horror.

It may seem scary but it worked and worked well. One steam Lombard log hauler was used as late as 1948. As I mentioned in another comment they would throw straw on the ice road to slow the sleds. The idea was to pull the sleds down the grade as opposed to being pushed by them. Also, the reverse lever can be used to brake the machine and is pretty effective though, as the advise in the manual warns - don't brake so hard that the lags stop turning - once that happens your going for a ride. Amazing piece of technology and history that I feel very privileged to maintain and operate.

The vertical boiler Lombards were not early machines. They were sold concurrent with the big 20 ton Log Haulers as a lighter, cheaper machine. Folklore has really played up the dangers of operating one of these machines since they did not have brakes. The reality was quite different. They were expensive and every effort was made to maximize the quantity of timber they could move during a very short hauling season. The ice roads were well made and well maintained and just like with a railroad heavy grades were avoided. Grades not exceeding 4% were ideal. If there was a steep grade they would place straw in the road to create drag - the idea was to pull the sleds down the grade as opposed to being pushed. You can see a Lombard log hauler in action at the Maine Forest & Logging Museum in Bradley, Maine. Their website has ton's of additional information
