Absolutely, the greatest and most fascinating figure in the history of Professional Sports. For me, arguing the greatest coach in Pro Football History is like comparing the Sun to the Moon. One will always outshine the other. Lombardi outshone every coach in his profession. Then and now. Not only did he win more titles than any coach in a shorter period of time, he transcended his very profession. Vince Lombardi is America's ultimate symbol of striving to attain. An uncompromising dedication to perfection. Almost a "Point of Light" rather than a corporeal human being. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANYONE TO MATCH THIS COACHING ICON.

Figures like Lombari have drawn me to a lifelong passion for this sport. The talent of players can appease the eyes on any given Sunday, sure. The weekly discipline, year around, of a formidably imposing coach is wisdom in action. Life lessons vividly exemplified by one leader, in command of his sideline.

In March of 1971, six months after Lombardi 's death, I had the privilege of receiving a scholastic achievement award. I was in elementary school at the time. The award was presented to me by Willie Davis, one of Vincent's great defensive standouts back in the day. I was awestruck. Willie was his own man, but you could sense that Lombardi was there.

You can't write fiction better than the true story about Italian-American Vince Lombardi and his struggle with discrimination to become a head coach, being hired by Green Bay of all places, moving there from NYC, and taking a Packers team with the worst NFL record to winning an NFL championship in only 3 years. 5 NFL championships for the Packers during the 1960s. That huge and dominating statue of Vince overlooking the entrance to Lambeau Field tells it all...'larger than life', just like he actually was.

NFL Films really perfected the art form of football biography in the late 60s - early 70s. A perfect mix of film, narration, music and interview, all geared toward telling a compelling story. It fell off after that, and is truly abysmal now. It is interesting to listen to the players and coaches on the sidelines then compared to now also in NFL film productions. The level of mental intensity of players screaming on the sidelines was so much greater back then. Was it because of the fact that Americans did so much more physical work back then as compared to now, that everything did not come to them easily, that gave them a kind of gruffness and excitableness of character that is so lacking in today's players, and the American people in general? I love to go back to these films to the days of my childhood, and reminisce about an America that I used to love, that had a purpose and a destiny, as opposed to the decadent self hatred that has taken over this spiritually sick and failing society in which I now live.

Celebrated our honeymoon by attending that game in the L.A. Coliseum in December 1967 that the Rams won in the last minute. Rams were absolutely loaded with talent that year but the Packers - when the chips were down in the playoff game - played at the highest level I've seen a team play...and it was because of Lombardi.

Vince dedicated his life to family/faith/football. It obviously took its toll on him the later, and I truly believe it put him in an early grave. He was 110% dedicated to coaching and his players. I've been a Packers fan since I was 5/1980, and I'm from South Philadelphia and still live here and still root for the only team I ever have/will the rest of my life. I have read/watched all the books/documentaries/quotes available about VL and it has inspired me as a person/father/throughout the years. Long live Vince Lombardi and the Green Bay Packers!!!!!!!

The win against the Rams in the 1967 playoffs was one of the best performances Lombardi ever got from his team. That was a really first rate Rams team with Allen coaching. In fact, man by man they were probably better than GB. But Lombardi just had his team so well prepared with such a good game plan.

Agree totally. In the 2nd Q, when Travis Williams ran 47 yards for a touchdown, it was obvious that the Packers were going to win. Not only because of Williams's running, but because Packers OT Forest Gregg helped open a gigantic hole against none other than all-world DE end Ram Deacon Jones. That may well have been Gregg's best game, and that's saying something.

Don't forget that 1967 would be the last season Vince Lombardi would be as head coach. The Packers, minus Jim Taylor (expansion draft) and Paul Hornung (retirement),had a backfield by committee featuring rookie sensation Travis Williams,Donny Anderson,Jim Grabowski,Elijah Pitts and Ben Wilson. They also had a midseason pickup in Chuck Mercein. The Packers beat Los Angeles in the Western Conference Playoff, next defeated Dallas in the NFL Championship Game,21-17 and beat Oakland 33-14 in Super Bowl II. Lombardi retired as head coach six weeks later. In 1970 Lombardi was dead of cancer at 57.

Do you have the 1962 NFL Championship game? Can't find that game anywhere on KZbin. Some Packers players have said the weather during that game was even colder than the Ice Bowl. No idea how Jerry Kramer managed to make 3 field goals with the 40 mph gusts of icy wind swirling around Yankee Stadium that day. Jim Taylor said that was the toughest game he ever played in during his entire career. The Giants defense beat up Taylor pretty good during that game but he still managed 85 rushing yards

Jim Taylor was easily one of the toughest guys ever to play in the NFL. But at halftime of that 1962 NFL Championship game, Taylor screamed in pain as the doctors worked on one of his arms. I read that in a 1972 - 1973 book about Lombardi.

This was produced by NFL Films for CBS for airing in 1968. ESPN Classic re-aired this over 10 years ago, and some of the lost footage and interviews from this are on the HBO documentary from 2010. In Lost Treasures, Yoshio Kishi was critical of some of the NFL Films' work. He even didn't like John Facenda and said they should have used someone else.

Christopher Ball Another Pats Hater, I presume? The Patriots lost to the Giants twice, both times on Make or Break Circumstances(Say what you want, who cares)! Super Bowl 42 was The Lucky Catch by David Tyree that kept the Giants Winning Drive Alive, and Super Bowl 46 the Patriots could’ve wrapped up had Wes Welker caught the pass that could have given New England a First Down which would allow them to kill off the clock. And as for being caught cheating. Yes, Tom Brady deflated footballs in the 2014 AFC Championship because he wanted those Footballs made for his comfort while throwing them. They felt Overinflated(To Brady’s Standards). Spygate? That’s another story! Roger Goddell threw away the evidence leading to those allegations because he felt it was not worth pursuing.

There is no Lombardi "tree". I have no idea who any of his assistant coaches were, and his 2 former players who were later coaches, Starr and Gregg, did not have any sustained success. You look at Paul Brown and you think Shula, Knoll, and Walsh. Winners of 9 of the first 24 Super Bowls played. There was no real innovation from the 60's Packers. It was just the preparedness and perfection of executing a simple game plan. And that's why Lombardi still stands alone above the others.
