I have a suggestion that I use myself when having to extend leather straps - it is with kindness that I make this suggestion. If you follow how quilt binding is made, the seam is staggered, sewing is a breeze and makes a much stronger strap. The pieces are placed together as a sideways L. Sew Southern has a great video on binding , you only need to watch how to attach the pieces required to make the desired length , not the whole video. Love your patterns and wonderful instructions. Xo K - Nova Scotia
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Do you mean connecting them at a 90 degree angle to get a staggered seam? I do my fabric straps that way but for cork I find it doesn’t work so well which is why I’ve ended up doing it this way 🤷‍♀️ but I always use that method for cotton fabrics and it works really well but it seems to cause issues with the cork on the edges and makes it even thicker 🤔 I’ve always wanted to visit Nova Scotia. What a beautiful place!!
@sandollarstudio803
@sandollarstudio803 3 жыл бұрын
@@CountryCowDesigns Yes a 90. I must confess I have never used cork, strictly a leather gal.
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Ah I used to use so much leather but I somehow got converted to cork 😆 yeah I tried it with cork, just assuming it would work as well as it does on cotton but it didn’t 🤔 it was unexpected. So I’ve taken to doing cork this way, though generally I try to avoid joins wherever possible 😂

I ADORE this pattern! I trusted the instructions (even when I didn’t think they would work), and they were spot on! The only part I struggled with was turning the bag through the zipper pocket because I attached the lining bottom to the exterior bottom which did result in a beautiful finish on the inside. I think I’ll just use a wider zip next time because there WILL be a next time! 💜

Thanks! I get them from a few different places, some are from Spoonflower, but it’s quite pricey so I try to only do that for really special stuff. Also I get a few from Blended Threads from time to them and Wattle & Slate. I usually will list in the video description where the fabric is from but always feel free to ask if there’s a specific one you like 👍🏻

What a gorgeous bag and wonderful tutorial!! I've been a garment maker all my life and just recently started making bags...so I'm still learning. :) I appreciate the detail in your tutorial. I read the comments already, thank you for the clarification on the thread...I was going to ask. I do wonder why you applied the decovil light on top of the hardware and pockets? Would it still work if you applied it to the cork directly and then added the hardware and pockets? I'm asking because I don't know...I'm not making a suggestion. :) Again, thank you for the tutorial - I subscribed. :)
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Yep I did it that way because it gives better structure when the Decovil is all applied in one go. If you do it separately then there’s no Decovil behind the zips and it just means it’s not got the same stability and sags a bit where the zips are. Hope that makes sense 😆 it’s more awkward this way but it gives a nicer finish overall.

Just finished watching the video and am getting ready to purchase the pattern. One Question - I have 1 inch rings can those be used in place of the 1.5 inch rings listed? Thanks!
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
I think I you’ll struggle to fit the handles around 1” O-rings. They’re 3/4” on each side so they fit 1 1/2” well. One of my testers used curtain rings that were 35mm (1 3/8”) and those worked well too but I wouldn’t want to go any smaller than that.

You are doing such a amazing videos :) In this one, I just have to tell you that your conversion of inch to mm is wrong in several places. For example from 1/4 "to 2.5 mm (it is 6 mm) - from 1/8" to 4 mm (it is 3 mm) and 3/8 "inch to 3 mm (it is 9.5 mill )
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for letting me know. I don’t even remember saying that 🤦🏼‍♀️ which part of the video is that? I might need to correct it. It’s funny because I don’t usually try to convert things to mm because I don’t know the conversion so I have no idea why I’ve said that in this video 🤷‍♀️
@katjaeisland-schmidt6881
@katjaeisland-schmidt6881 3 жыл бұрын
@@CountryCowDesigns you don't say it. It is written on your screen several places. I noticed it because I am Danish and we uses mm, although I am trying to always using inch.
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Oh do you mean when I’m sewing? The “ refers to the seam allowance and the mm refers to the stitch length, that’s why they don’t match up. They’re for two different things. Problem is that our machines in the UK (and I think in the USA too) show the seam allowances as inches and the stitch length as millimetres. That’s why I show them that way 😁
@katjaeisland-schmidt6881
@katjaeisland-schmidt6881 3 жыл бұрын
@@CountryCowDesigns I know that. But on the same time/page you e.g. write that seamallowance 1/4 inch is the same as 2,5 mm and it is not, it is 6 mm.
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
The 1/4” refers to the seam allowance, which is 6mm yes. The 2.5mm shown on the screen isn’t for the seam allowance. It refers to the stitch length instead. I’ll try to make it more clear on the next video to show the measurements are for different things. Perhaps if I put on the screen that the seam allowance is 1/4” (6mm) and the stitch length is 1/8” (2.5mm)?

How do you take rivets out of cork
@CountryCowDesigns
@CountryCowDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
With a fair bit of stress 😂 I have some wire cutters that I use. I clasp onto the rivet end and give it a good tug from different directions and after a while it comes out!
