I think the lomo emulsions are still worth celebrating even if they're not "professional" quality and have a boutique premium charge. At this point in the film market beggars can't be choosers - i'll shoot exclusively lomo purple before i have to switch back to digital.

@CristianGeelen

Despite the look is not for everyone I think the film should be celebrated nonetheless. I mean you can alternatively buy a 5 pack of portra for 53,-… Or count tumbleweeds for a new film stock from other companies… Lomography not only had a big part in keeping film alive when it was dead as doornails. But also they created a totally new film stock! I mean how cool is that! Glass should be half full, y’all. :) They did their part, we as a community should do ours. :)

I shot a roll of this stuff when i went on a hike during the summer, just to see how it would handle landscapes and nature since i only ever saw it being used for streetphotography. And i gotta be honest, i fell in love with the results. The heavy grain with the pretty subdued colorpalette gave my images an almost painting-like look, and i didnt get any muddy, grey-brown results like the ones you were talking about. It is certainly special and a bit weird, but i was happy to have tried it out.

Interested in which ISO you were using it at and sun conditions. I find that I love Metropolis for landscape, but shot at 400 in full sun. It tends to a very pastel sort of palette when shot like that. Cloudy days (for me) are better suited to 100 ISO where there is more contrast, and more of a feeling of old hand colored sepias from the early 20th century.
@triw5662
@triw5662 Жыл бұрын
@@artistjoh that's exactly how i used it too, 400 with a lot of sun. I didn't try changing the iso while shooting, but definitely noticed that drop in contrast as soon as the sun was gone! I only shot this one roll unfortunately, and wasn't able to get it at my usual shops, but i'll definitely keep that in mind next time, thank you :)

YES I've been waiting for you to do a video about this! I personally really like the bleach bypass look. I think you're right. It's not a film I would just want to wander around with, but I can see this look being really useful for a lot of the work I do.

Highly recommend going for the 120 version of this film. It's not as super grainy as the 35mm.

I think the rumor is that InovisCoat GmbH in Germany manufactures the bespoke Lomo color stuff, and they're going to manufacture ORWO's upcoming color film as well.
@Purp1eP3nguinZ
@Purp1eP3nguinZ 2 жыл бұрын
InovisCoat and ORWO are closely related, in the sense that a film made by ORWO can also be said to be made by InovisCoat. It would make sense that the Lomochrome films are finished by ORWO/InovisCoat. They share the same packaging and (terrible) plastic canisters as the Lomo "Kino" black and white films, which are all but confirmed to be various rebranded ORWO films. It would not surprise me if ADOX is somehow involved in making the emulsion, passing it to ORWO to coat and finish the film.
@sednoid
@sednoid 2 жыл бұрын
Some people even speculate that all these weird Lomo colour films originate from failed trial runs of that colour ORWO as they're developing it. Not what the end goal is supposed to be but interesting enough so that they can sell it as a specialty film.
@Dan-TechAndMusic
@Dan-TechAndMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@sednoid I could see that somewhat for Metropolis, but Purple and the now discontinued Turquoise seem far too wacky to not have been a deliberate choice during development. I'm not a film chemist, but I would be surprised if badly designed/manufactured color film results in such heavy color shifts. It'd make more sense to me with Metropolis just being muddy with practically all colors. That said, it's not as if Lomography and whoever makes the stuff don't make mistakes, they've made it a gimmick to sell "Mistaken Identity" film because someone fucked up the packaging on batches of Metro and Purple.
@Purp1eP3nguinZ
@Purp1eP3nguinZ 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dan-TechAndMusic purple and the oft-forgotten turquoise work by swapping the color dyes in two of the three layers. For example, in Lomo purple the yellow and magenta dyes are swapped, so in the final image magenta becomes yellow and vice versa, and green becomes blue and vice versa. Pure red and cyan are therefore unaffected. In Lomo turquoise it's just a different swap. I would not be at all surprised if other than that color swap both films were essentially the same as metropolis.
@Purp1eP3nguinZ
@Purp1eP3nguinZ 2 жыл бұрын
To add to this comment, try swapping the blue and green channels of an image in photoshop. It will make normal pictures look like Lomo purple, and it make Lomo purple images look like a "normal" film. I find it has a similar desaturated feel to metropolis.

I love Metropolis. Shot at 400 and in full sun, it gives a palette I like - pastel, subdued, but color oriented. At 100 ISO it becomes more like a blending of black and white with color, and it is most suited to street photography. Your 400 examples looked like it was a cloudy day and thus did not reach that more pastel palette stage. I like the moodiness I can get with Metropolis. I like the grain, so I like it in 110 even more than 135. It might not be for you, and that is a good thing, because it means more rolls in stock for those of us who do like it :)

At this point I'd say we shouldn't complain about new film and still support it and try to find ways to shoot it. We need to show that there is a need and a market for brand new color films. I'd rather shoot Metropolis the rest of my life if it would keep film alive during a time where stuff is being discontinued and out of stock all the time.
@CollinJacksonfilm
@CollinJacksonfilm 2 жыл бұрын
I definitely understand that sentiment, but I don't think you should have to shoot something you just don't like the look of. I think it's completely fair game to criticize the film if you don't like it, just like it's also completely fair to praise the film if you love it.

Lomo emulsions tend to just look better on 120 though it's probably just because of the larger negatives. It's stuff that I'd try at least once so I can have an opinion on it but definitely wouldn't go on the gram. In other news I've heard Cinestill is producing 4x5 film! Having motion picture film in large format seems pretty neat xD

You really need to shoot metropolis in the right sort of light and pick the right sort of subject to shoot. It doesn't do portraits well, unless you want to shoot that pasty, washed out look. It's better for urban cityscapes that have that cold, gritty, grimy, grungy feeling. It's like a color "alternative" to using B&W for that type of shoot. Though, some places are just too clean and tidy for it. And, too bright and airy.

I’ve never shot this film but based off his shots of landscape and very detailed images, it makes not want to spend time looking into the details. It felt difficult or even impossible to focus on the details and I found myself skipping around the image almost lost.

This film reminds me of GAF Anscochrome from the 1960's. (Or Soviet color film of the same time.;) Considering that the Soviets took everything Agfacolor home after World War II, it also looks like "Hitler Chrome" of the 1940's.

So is Lomography Metropolis their version of Fujifilm Reala 100? in which shooting Reala in the shadows has a very Strong Magenta CAST as Lomo Metropolis as your cast in what in how it is going to turn out in whatever lighting, scene, color temperature, and speed of the film.... Confusing right? Why couldn't they bring back Kodak Vericolor film or as it was called "VPS" as this film is shot at 160 but I shot it as low as ISO 64.. And what color!!! Better than Ektar..

The weird thing for me is neither my photos nor the examples I've seen from other folks have matched the samples from the Kickstarter. That KS look is one I really wanted but I feel like the real stuff doesn't come close? For me, though I ended up with a lovely result (I shot my band's latest album cover using Metropolis), I still had to do a lot of work in post that I had expected I would've gotten right off of it. I don't really see the retained silver bleach-bypassy look. In fact in my case, the actual images (apart from the weird green tint of the base) looked normal? The rumor I heard was this film comes from Inoviscoat and was sort of testing stock while they worked on their color film. Since ORWO (who is now a subsidiary of Inoviscoat? Or maybe I have that backwards - or I'm completely wrong here) announced new ECN2 film coming out, maybe there's something to that.

Same goes for Lomo Purple shots, the examples make it seem like you could get some Aerochrome-like color shifts that pop, yet most real results I've seen just look like purple mush. Also, they seriously need to stop calling it "chrome" if it ain't reversal film.

I believe that the way this film came out is accidental and is an experiment of making color negative film from scratch. They simply didn't want to ruin a lot of emulsion produced so they started selling it. And people started buying. But that's just my theory
