My favourite piece of music shown at the Danny Boyle's genius London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony - a truly mindblowing event. This piece was shown primarily during the Industrial Revolution Scenes and is a really hauntingly beautiful piece of music.
Please note this is not my piece of music and it is owned by the Olympic Games Association, their KZbin Channel can be found HERE - / olympic
You can find all the tracks played during the opening ceremony under the album "Isles of Wonder" which can be accessed here; itunes.apple.co...

I'm an Aussie - but with British roots (and a UK passport) - and the Ceremony made me proud of the little island that has made such an outsized contribution to world history and culture. The Beijing Ceremony was all about military-style precision. It betrayed Beijing's massive insecurity complex and the control it has over its citizens. London didn't demand such perfection. It was the ceremony of a mature democracy. It was a people's ceremony with 'real' people (ie deaf children's choir).

The steam-engine converted heat by burning fuel into mechanical work, one conducive to the system of cylinders in motion, working as an energy conversion device, releasing heat and extracting work through the combustion of fuel. Engineers of the time were confounded by the rather low efficiency of the steam-engines, because most of the heat dissipated uselessly into the environment. The second law of thermodynamics helped engineers understand the underlying principle that deals with the constraints upon the direction of heat transfer.

When we first got given the games I believed that it would be a massive flop. That was until they started and the atmosphere in East London changed forever. Suddenly people were proud of where they came from, people smiled and greeted each other. Even today, passing the stadium I still smile and feel proud of what we achieved. I cried the first time I saw this segment and to this day I get chills watching this (I knew many people who had the opportunity to take part) as the rings came together and then the raising of the petals. The great was definitely put back in Britain.

Rather tired of hearing about "Scotland this, Scotland that". When do you ever see the English claiming medals solely for England? In England it's always "Britain" or "Great Britain". In Scotland it's always "Scotland, Scotland, Scotland". If you lot up there no longer care about the Kingdom of Great Britain and want to go your own way, off you go! England doesn't need you! If you want to stay, then less of the Scottish and let's all get on with being British, together!

What a stunning piece of music for an inspired opening ceremony. I found this section, and the cauldron lighting touching and poignant. Just goes to show, you don't need a Beijing budget to make something beautifully touching. Well done to Danny Boyle, Great Britain and London. You should all be very proud of yourselves.
