Backstage the staff does a "pre-interview" where they ask the guests what topics they'd like to hit, and how the host should preface them. Almost all come with prepared stories. It doesn't take anything away from an actor's talent for them to be able to weave a prompt into an interesting anecdote, or deliver that anecdote well. It's pretty common knowledge that talk shows work this way, and if you watch this or any interview with that knowledge in mind it's pretty clear what the setups are. ("how is your wife Emily Blunt?" audience reacts "I married up... amusing anecdote.") That doesn't mean it's easy to do, it's clearly not easy, or that his stories are untrue or anything. It's just the format of the show. The REALLY talented people are good at making the stories seem naturalistic, so you don't even realize they're pre-prepared. And the REALLY REALLY talented people go on with no pre-interview and wing it, which is extremely rare. (If you were a host, why even allow someone to attempt that? Most likely means dead air.) Norm McDonald interviews in particular are hilarious for that reason. Either he gives them completely false prompts, wings it, or goes places entirely unexpected. And it's fun to watch the hosts try to keep up. (The good ones can, the bad ones can't, this is where you see their true mettle.)

At least his format and delivery is better than Kimmel, Ellen, Letterman, Leno and all those other talk show hosts. As a Scottish person I probably prefer Graham Norton's humour and format but Conan has good skits and generally good jokes and quick wit, James Cordon has a few good skits but I hate his delivery in general, Craig Ferguson played off his guests well and was hilariously random and Stephen Colbert is sometimes alright but I don't really like his style of humour often. The rest are pretty shite but at least Fallon is bearable and has a few good segments to engage guests. I can't stand Kimmel. I find it's pretty common for American hosts to speak over their guests and it gets pretty annoying.

I love them both individually and together. Such a beautiful couple. I love how John loves and adores his wife. I also love how John visits his family whether he’s on set filming or his wife Emily is on a set filming. John said this when filming Jack Ryan, during a behind the scenes commentary that visiting his family every weekend regardless of where he’s at or where his family is at is a nonnegotiable.
