Personally, I think it is the bad road design of the area around Putney bridge as it happens every single day. You can't really blame most of the bus drivers,you just have to accept that the road is not big enough for a bike lane within a normal lane. I think they have a hard job. As a cyclist, I would also never undertake a bus, far too risky in my eyes as they frequently pull in. We can't expect them not too overtake us close and then we do exactly the same.
@ryansedgwick-londoncycling90075 жыл бұрын
Putney Bridge is a real bottle neck and I can't see it getting better any time soon. I have a lot of sympathy for the bus drivers as the vehicles are huge and there's not a lot of room to maneuver, most of them are very good. I typically avoid undertaking buses unless they are stopped at a light and I want to get to the cycle box in front of the traffic. If I do pass (depends on circumstances but normally when the bus is slow and holding me up) I'm pretty cagey and will back out of it at the slightest hint of danger. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a lot of experience.

I'd argue that undertaking a moving bus is a dangerous maneuver even when there is a cycle lane provided. You can't see what is happening across the bus on the other side of the road or on other lanes and you have no way to tell whether the bus is going to make a move to avoid something that you cannot possibly judge. Going inside a stationary bus (in traffic) is fine but I wouldn't recommend doing that when the bus is moving.

What happened instead is that as the bus was pulling out in front of you, both of you had to break. If it just let you pass, it would have probably stuck in its lane for a longer time, with all that people on board. This doesn"t give the driver the right to send you across the road but I can fully understand his/her frustration. A little bit of courtesy can go a long way.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. If busses are indicating to pull away from a bus stop you should give way. However if they are wanting to change lane (like the examples in my video) then normal rules apply and the drivers should wait until they have a gap in the lane, or traffic in that lane stops to let them out. Unfortunately some bus drivers, if they see it’s “only” a cyclist will change lane on you and cut you up, forcing you to brake. This is bad driving, on your driving test if your manoeuvres force other traffic to take avoiding action you’ll fail your test.

I am riding a bike myself. However in many of these cases I do feel that the "bus squeezes me" comment is not or not fully valid. - First they usually do flash their indicator light when you are still quite behind. You just happen to arrive at a relatively high speed. I believe this is a usual "symptom", the relative speed of a fast biker is too high in congested areas, between maneuvering vehicles. - Second, you do seem to be suprised at buses "squeezing" into bus stops when (I guess) you know the road, they are ahead of you, you do see them using indicator lights. So what should one really expect in such a situation? On top of the above there are multiple bicycles, when one moves right the other moves left, when one slows down (probably to give way) the other flashes by in an instant. Just imagine being a bus driver in these situations. In general, biking is good, but we should not reasonably expect proper conditions on these congested but tight roads. Probably the circumstances do not really fit for SAFE and fast medium distance rides from/to work. That is my conclusion of the story. P. S. You are still one of the more attentive and cautious given how other riders behave in various situations in your videos.

The buses squeezing me when pulling out, each example is on two lane roads where I’m in the right hand lane. I’ve not prevented the bus from pulling away from the bus stop in it’s own lane. However the driver has subsequently decided to change lane and ignored the fact that the lane they are pulling into is not clear. I’m not going more than 15-20mph same as the cars. Putney Bridge is where you see a few examples of buses cutting into the cycle lane. The road from Putney High-street narrows from two lanes to one, unfortunately some bus drivers use the cycle lane as a way of squeezing through. The bus stop is 100m up the road so they should remain in the road lane and pull in closer to the stop. Especially when you see them actively cutting cyclists up in the lane. About 100 cyclists a year are killed on the roads in the UK. A lot of those will be sure to heavy vehicles (not necessarily buses). We have similar rules about the space to pass, motor vehicles are supposed to give the same about of room they'd give when passing another car. Have you not read the highway code regarding buses? You are supposed to give way to buses signaling to move out, and you don't. (Highway Code rule 223). The buses signalled to move out in many of your instances, but you chose to charge up to them. Passing the nearside of a moving 12 ton vehicle whilst riding a bicycle is madness. Worse when the bus is stationery and passengers may step out.

Look more closely, in the bulk of the cases where the bus is indicating to pull away from a bus stop, it’s on a two lane road and I’m on the outside lane. I’m not stopping the bus from pulling out, the bus had a whole lane to pull out into. In these cases the bus is then trying to pull into the second lane ignoring the fact that I’m there. The rule in the Highway Code about giving way to a bus pulling away from a bus stop is irrelevant as I’ve given way, I’ve given the bus the whole lane. These bus drivers are now trying to change lane and are breaching the following rule: 133 If you need to change lane, first use your mirrors and if necessary take a quick sideways glance to make sure you will not force another road user to change course or speed. When it is safe to do so, signal to indicate your intentions to other road users and when clear, move over.

@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 in some cases the bus has to pull right out to leave the stop, due to a stationery bus in front. This therefore is part of the action of the bus pulling out. The bus driver keeps the indicator on all the time it is doing this manouvre, yet instead of holding back you continue pedalling towards the bus to create an unnecessary danger to yourself. My approach when cycling is to regard the bus as king of the road, and I often pull up behind the bus, in the drivers view and wave him out. With a possible 90 people on a bus, I prefer to make their bus journey as safe and as pleasant as possible. That's not in the Highway Code, but it's in the code of being considerate. As with many cyclists it's a case of 'me, me, me'. Cars use blinkers only if its foggy/raining, vehicles taking up our bike lanes, people catching their commute in the middle of the road, and the best part, we cycle under 40°C of heat with 60% humidity. Yeah.

Should be poor cycling whilst riding between buses from the first clip. Should be aware of bus with right hand signal pulling out then further to undertake a bus who was overtaking another with out signalling or observations. If I was on my motorcycle test this would have been a fail, sorry some cyclist need to spot their errors too.

This guy doesn't know what is "courtesy". He doesn't care of putting himself in dangerous situations just because "ThE HighWaY COde AlLowS HiM TO do ThAt". I'm automobilist, pedestrian (like all of us...) and cyclist. I can always make mistake, when I walk, drive or ride. Why didn't I have any accident ? man those gaps kill me when im riding, ive only just started cycling in london and i usually stay behind the bus because i honestly don't trust them. London needs to take a page out of NL's book, because they actually respect cyclists and always let them go first
@ryansedgwick-londoncycling90075 жыл бұрын
That's very sensible, if you're not sure then hang back. Best not to trust them as then you won't be surprised. I can imagine it must be very hard to navigate such a big vehicle through busy and narrow London streets. However there are some bits drivers or there who clearly either ignore cycles or deliberately bully us out of the way.

@ryansedgwick-londoncycling90075 жыл бұрын
My take is that there are a lot of people out there who have an inherent dislike of cyclists, yet seem to like watching cycle videos. I read a few articles analysing why people dislike cyclist so much. The prognosis was down to people feeling it was not fair. If someone is stuck in a traffic jam, they aren't happy, but everyone else is stuck so it's fair. If another car cuts in, or drives down the hard shoulder etc then people get really angry. So when they see lots of cyclists breezing past when they are stuck they feel that it's not fair. They seem less bothered by mopeds and motorbikes doing the same. When they are not stuck in traffic they are then sometimes held up behind slower cyclists, perhaps at a traffic light when it goes green yet there are 20 cyclists in front and they can't get up to speed for another 30 seconds whilst all the cycles get into single file. A second theory is that it makes people feel bad about themselves. Cyclist are usually fit, often wearing sports wear (lycra really seems to trigger a lot of people, yet less so when they see it on a jogger). So if you've got someone who's late for work, stuck in traffic. Maybe has some self conscious feelings about not having exercised or their weight. Then they see streams of lycra glad cyclists zipping merrily down the inside, jumping all the queues. I think that triggers negative feelings, especially if some of those cyclists break the rules by taking to the pavements or running red lights. My advice to such people, if you can't beat them, join them! 😉👍

Wow, I would hop on a bus and head to the rear and with a sharp knife do some damage so they take the bus out of service. Wonder what could happen if a large group of cyclists did that . And leave a car with be kind to cyclists.

You make it look like in this video like you are king of the road and everyone should make way. You self put info in the begining of the video about the busses size. They also have huge blind zones. And you guys are everywhere and going so fast. Should bus drivers keep track of every one of you and always let all of you pass? Its not possible, then busses would just stay still. What about cyclists help a little by not getting angry that a bus was in the way of you flying by? So much easier for bicycle to manuver. But i do not in anyway support drivers that press bicycles of the road. This is unexeptable!

London bus drivers know that there are lots of cycles in the city, and I appreciate that driving a bus is not easy. The examples you see here are where the drivers have pulled out in me, cut me up or have unnecessarily driven in the cycle lane. These are professional drivers and in all these cases I would have been easy to see in a mirror, or through the windscreen. I suspect most of these drivers had seen me and went anyway, knowing that being in a big heavy bus that I would be forced to give way. I cycle past 100s of buses a day and most are able to operate without bullying cyclists out of the way.

@@CS_22 Than what? Many more people die in cars than on cycles! Cycling is relatively safe due to the low speeds and the fact that it tends to be done on roads with a low speed limit. In the year to June 2018, the stats for people killed or seriously injured in road traffic accidents are: 9,760 in cars 6,110 on foot 5,760 on motorbikes 3,780 on cycles So you're least likely to die on a cycle.
