I had a clear gap ahead of me, I was going straight on, I gave way to the pedestrians who were already in the road (I did not hold them up at all). This chap was still on the pavement as I went through the green, I had to warn him so he didn’t walk into the side if me. All of those pedestrians ignored the red signal on the crossing, and the last chap didn’t even look before walking into the road. We expect toddlers to understand these rules, do you?

@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 You keep talking of this "clear gap" like it's an excuse. Do you think you'd take kindly to a car driving between you and a buddy just because there was a "clear gap"? The road wasn't clear. @@----.__ It was the self entitled pedestrians who didn’t want to stop despite them having the red figure at the crossing. Unfortunately, as a cyclist you can wait there all day and no pedestrian is going to wait for you. So you have to pick a gap and carefully proceed. I passed behind the pedestrian to go through the clear and expanding gap between them and the curb. Then the next lemming also ignored the red figure, ignored the oncoming traffic and walked out pretty much into me, hence me shouting a warning. I don’t like that, I don’t want an incident, I just want to get to work. I didn’t make that chap ignore the light and step out, I’m slowly and carefully trying to go through a green light, not much else I can do there. I can’t read his mind that he’s going to ignore the crossing, to not look before stepping into the road. All I can do is take care, and be aware of idiots and avoid them. And that’s what I did, I avoided any collision, I had to yell to get the guy’s attention to stop him literally walking into the side of me. It’s pretty simple, we teach our tiny children from nursery school age to wait at the red figure, to stop, look and listen, and wait for a safe gap before crossing. Why do you think the rules don’t apply to pedestrians all of a sudden?

Number of inconsiderate cyclists increased so I started to walk in the middle of cycling lanes. Remember, contrary to a popular belief of cyclists IT’S NOT ILLEGAL for a pedestrian to walk anywhere on the road except for motorways, so you can’t be prosecuted and police have no right to prevent you from walking there. @@OUTLAW187 It's pointless refering to a car as that's irrelevant here. There's lots you do differently compared to cars and cycles, plus pedestrians treat cars and cycles very differently. For context, cycling in Central London rush hour you encounter literally hundreds of pedestrians in the road every day, reason being is that many don't see cyclists as a danger and just walk out on us. As there are millions commuting into the City each day, as a cyclist you become adept at negotiating them as if you waited for them all you'd be there all day. Hand up, shouldn't have shouted at the guy, however he had a red man in front of him long before he got to the road, and ignored it. It's very clear that if you have the red man then the traffic on the other side likely has the green. There's zero excuse for not seeing the red man. Had he not wrongly, and hypocritically accused me I'd never have stopped. I didn't threaten him with anything, or swear at him, I cooled very quick and explained the situation. There was no pushing of weight. He apologised because he knew he was in the wrong. You have a personal responsibility for both your safety, and that of others when you cross the road. When you get it wrong take responsibility, don't lie and try and blame others. There's little personal responsibility these days, people are such narcissists that they can't bear to accept anything could be their fault and they have to find someone else to blame.

I was expecting him to stop, which he should have done. I take your point that there’s no point being dead and right. There’s a balance to be had however, during rush hour, pedestrians will continue to stream across little side roads like that even if it’s red. If a car is coming they’ll wait, but not a cyclist. Sit and wait for him and the next one will cross, and the next etc. etc. and then my light is red again. So unfortunately you have to push through a little bit. Once they see that you are definitely coming they tend to wait, not this guy though as he didn’t even look.

Especially when traffic is approaching. Rule 22 of the Highway Code, you have eyes don’t you? Then read this: Rule 22 Pelican crossings. These are signal-controlled crossings operated by pedestrians. Push the control button to activate the traffic signals. WHEN THE RED FIGURE SHOWS, do not cross. When a steady green figure shows, check the traffic has stopped then cross with care. It also states that you must stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass (yes, road traffic has right of way), and wait for a safe gap before crossing. I agree you are unlikely to get arrested for ignoring those, cyclists who run the reds and cycle on pavements are also unlikely to get arrested but it doesn't make it right, doesn't make it safe. @@stevegiles4549 You may not have tried cycling in Central London rush hour so I’ll explain my stance. There are literally hundreds of thousands of pedestrians rushing to work. In the last 5 minutes of my commute I turn off the embankment and head up to my office by St Paul’s Cathedral. This area has thousands of companies so is very heavy on pedestrians. In this section you literally never have a clear road, there are always pedestrians in the road as they are rushing and ignoring crossing rules, and certainly not going to stop for a cyclist. It’s not a case of patience, if you don’t push forward on your cycle then they won’t stop crossing even if they have a red figure. And the volume of pedestrians is such that it’s a constant stream. I don’t like it but you have to find a gap, there’s no other way. I had to shout a warning to that guy as he was going to walk into me. There is a massive difference to when in a car. Pedestrians recognise a car as danger and will stop for a car, but won’t stop for a cycle. This necessity to find a gap is driven by pedestrian behaviour. I don’t like it, I don’t want to have to push through, would far rather pedestrians honoured the crossings and waited for a safe gap before crossing but that’s not the case. The bulk of pedestrian incidents you see in my videos either happen in this last 5 minute stretch of my commute, or around Big Ben and Parliament where there are lots of tourists. And what rule is that in the Highway Code? There's rule 170 which is similar to that but only applies if you are turning into a side road. Does not apply if they are crossing directly ahead of you. So your "ALWAYS" is incorrect and rule 170 is not applicable to this scenario. Rule 7D states that, when crossing a pedestrian must stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass (yes, road traffic has right of way), and wait for a safe gap before crossing. The Highway Code also states that you must not start to cross on the red figure, which this chap did. I had the green light, so was honouring my legal duty with respect to the lights. @@ifancotter3525 It's not void, as the chap.on the left is expected to stop, and he didn't. This is the conundrum faced by cyclists in London, even if the pedestrians have a red man, if they see only cyclists and no cars, they just keep coming. If you sit there and wait until no pedestrians are in the road it doesn't happen and your light is back to red. You obviously can't go when your light is red, and when your light is green the pedestrians refuse to stop for lowly cyclists and continue to cross anyway. So technically you can't go on green either and have to wait until a car comes to force pedestrians to wait. So in reality you have to push forward through a gap. No, he was wrong, the light was green, not red. Use your eyes and you can see this. The rules state that he should have stopped for the red figure. It’s that simple. You, and everyone else are taught how to cross the road as little children. Stop, look, listen, wait for the green figure, wait for a safe gap. Do you not understand this? Secondly, I did not collide with him. I shouted as he was about to walk into the side of me. Not only has he ignored all crossing rules, he’s about to walk into the side of a riad vehicle. You condone this do you? In the court case you mention, the cyclists and pedestrian collided with each other. The judge ruled that the blame was equal. The pedestrian was to blame for crossing on a red without looking, and the cyclist was to blame for not avoiding a collision. The cyclist swerved to avoid her, but she jumped back into his path and both were knocked out. The only reason she received damages and the cyclist didn’t was that right after it happened she claimed for damages, but the cyclist didn’t as he doesn’t believe in the claims culture. That cost him, had he claimed also the two would have netted off as the judge ruled equal blame. So before you quote a case, actually get your facts correct!

I would have reacted in a similar way. Day to day, im considered too relaxed, but I have very little patience for comments like that. I will reply / shout to comments or situations that are dangerous or unfair, be them drivers, pedestrians or fellow cyclists. I also defend other cyclists who are in the right. My boyfriend on the other hand was nearly knocked off his bike by a dangerous driver and was calm as a cucumber, just got on his bike and went on his way. It sounds like you have a very similar experience to me. I'm pretty calm in real life, and any one of these incidents I'd let slide. How've after it happens the 10th time in a five minute period, and the bloke flat out lies to pretend he was in the right, I lost my cool. Cyclists are so often dismissed as complaining about a minor thing, falling off a bike really hurts however and it's so easy to break a wrist or arm in even a very slow speed incident. These pedestrians and drivers just don't give a damn and would quite happily risk a serious injury to a cyclist just to gain 30 seconds in their day. I hope that people will start to be more patient and simply take their turn at lights. Cycle safe my friend., 🙂👍

Then you won’t need to be 'on the front foot' quite so much and will have more time to anticipate the actions of others so you don’t even end up in close calls. If I had been in a car, the pedestrians wouldn't have walked out. They treat cars very differently to cycles (certainly in London rush hour) . Most of the time, if there's a car coming then pedestrians will wait, if they see it's "just a cyclist" how've they will ignore you and walk out. You end up in a ridiculous scenario where you wait at the red, and when it turns green (and there are no cars) the pedestrians continue to stream across. So you can't go on red and you can't go on green. It's only when you push through, the pedestrians will begrudgingly wait, this guy didn't even do that, plus falsely accused me of running the red which was more than a little hypocritical. My speed was very slow, so there's no risk there plus I was ready to stop. I'd never have gone flying through that situation at top speed. Its an unfortunate fact that as a cyclist in Central London rush hour you have to hold your ground otherwise you'll be constantly bullied out of the way.

@@nealclayton3922 There was nobody behind me, so what's the issue with slowing right down so that the light had turned green by the time I got there? Can't win with you cycle haters, you moan that we're too fast, then you moan that we're too slow... Hypocrites!

You are in the wrong it says in the highway code Amber is for if its clear you can go and it wasn't and you still decided to push forward towards them so shut up all the guy did was take advantage as people was still crossing so you are in the wrong as always

I went through on the green. All of those pedestrians crossed when the red figure was shown. The Highway Code is clear that when the red figure is showing, do not cross. It’s pretty simple. So no, both you and they are wrong. 🙂👍🏻

@@namethe4274 It was green when I went through, and I gave way to the pedestrians already crossing. They didn’t have to stop for me as I passed behind them. The chap in this video was in the pavement, and I had to warn him so he didn’t walk off the pavement into the side of my bike. Use your eyes, wait at red traffic signals rather than pushing forward regardless and you’ll have no issues. 🙂👍🏻

@@cjaams71 I understand your point. Unfortunately when cycling in London, you have to make progress otherwise they keep coming (as this chap proves) and you'll wait forever. I cycled into the gap as the pedestrians who were already in the road, cleared. This guy was still on the pavement when I went through so I expected him to look and wait.
