At the very first frame of that clip, the first of those cyclists has already pulled out to pass the bus, at that point the moped hasn't passed me, and I'm a long way back from the bus. If someone pulls out right in front of you and cuts you up then fair enough to give a bit of horn. However, if there's just traffic already in front of you that you're coming up to then that's not right. If it had been a car already alongside the bus at the start of that clip then I doubt the moped would have acted that way. The moped came flying into that situation too quickly also. That was a bit much. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching. 🙂👍

At 0:29 the car has stopped to give way to the pedestrian. It is your fault that you didn't see him, you should have slowed down, especially with a car stopped in at a zebra crossing in front of you (what do you think that entails?) More generally you cycle as if everyone is going to obey every rule of the road, every time, in central London, at rush hour. They're not! Pedestrians are going to walk in that annoying bit on the Embankment, they'll cross in the middle of the road, and so-on, because that's how people use the road, especially in central London. It would do you good to slow down a bit before you get in a serious crash.
@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007

Yes, I said I saw him late. Watch from the start of that clip, the car is in a queue of traffic rather than being specifically stopped for the crossing. At the start of the clip the car in front is rolling over the crossing, I was expecting the other car to follow. It didn't, I stopped. Just goes to show that the situation isn't always what you think it is. I very much cycle as if everyone is going to break the rules. With my eyes on stalks and fingers on the brakes, hence my videos are full of misses and not accidents. My average speed is less than 15mph, I have one gear on that bike so max I can go a little over 20mph down on the Embankment where its open. The cars on the same road are traveling faster than me when not held up in traffic, and they present far more risk to pedestrians.

Yes, I said I saw him late in the video. If you look at the start of that clip there's a queue of traffic. As that queue moved forward I was expecting that car to move forward over the crossing also. When I realised that it wasn't, and saw the kid run out, I braked and waited for him to pass. Shows how the situation changes quickly in busy rush hour traffic and you can't rely on assumption.

every time i go on that cycle lane from embankment up to parliament, pedestrians both tourist and local are a) in it, b) walking in flat impassable rows, and c) can't get out of the lane without jerking wildly in at least 5 directions before realising where the pavement is, and d) forgetting their child who is still standing in the middle of the lane

Agreed, these people wouldn't stand or walk in road in the same way where there are cars etc, but as it's "only" a cycle lane they don't think it matters, or presents any risk. I really think that they need some railings alongside that cycle lane to ensure that pedestrians only cross at the designated crossings and don't stand in the middle of the lane for a photo opportunity. Safe cycling my friend. 🙂👍

My view as a Dutchman, from visiting London twice, several days each, and noticing how long the traffic lights stay red: I saw and understood that pedestrians simply wait for the last car, then cross as after all 'all traffic is then gone', which it need not be for esp. cyclists who come at the same point later than cars, and you can't hear much of cyclists (Edit: Which would notify those pedestrians of other traffic coming even when not looking left/right). In London to make things better they need to start with reprogramming the traffic lights and add more (compulsory to use) zebra crossings... For cycling in London I think headlamps with a laser projection symbol could be useful (so pedestrians see the symbol that should then be about 15m or so ahead of the cyclist). I've not tried one yet and it would be more an experiment for me, not something I'd need here in NL.

There are showers in the building I working in, so I keep my work clothes in the office (I get them dry cleaned by the office so they never come home). I wear cycle clothing on the ride, then shower and change at work so I'm fresh and clean. It's hard to get my kit dry though so often things are a bit soggy when I put them on to go home. So simple questions to ask yourself are: What kind of ground will I cycle on? Tarmac road? Gravel or grass on off road? Next question is will you cycle up and down hills, or will your cycle be flat? This will dictate how many gears you will need. Then do you intend to ride long distances, or shorter routes. This dictates whether you need a touring bike with panniers for carrying lots of items. Finally do you want to cycle fast for fitness, or do you want to cycle slow and comfortable just as a means of transportation. This dictates whether you want a light weight racing bike, or a more upright seated position bike built for comfort. One you know the answers to these questions you can speak to a bike shop and they can point you in the right direction. Irrespective of which type of bike, key elements are the frame, the gears and the brakes. Carbon frames are light but rigid and stiff so fast but less comfortable, you feel the bumps more. Steel frames are heavier and more flexible, so slower but more comfortable as they soak up the bumps. Brakes are very important, myself I prefer disk brakes as they work better in the wet plus they don’t damage the wheel rims. Gears it’s important to get a good level that will be reliable and not need too much maintenance. In the UK a company called Shimano is very popular for providing the gear sets. They make a number of different levels of quality so go for the top one that you can afford. If your route is flat like mine, and you don’t plan on cycling up hills then you can get a single speed bike, so no gears! Makes life very easy. There’s a review of my current bike on my channel. Hope that helps. Enjoy and keep safe. 🙂👍🏻

Same as at the end of that clip where I approach the green light in the lane with the pedestrians crossing, you can see another red light for the road traffic on the right. Separate lanes, separate signals. Some cycle lanes are to the side of a road, but still part of that road and still subject to the same signals. This stretch of cycle lane along the embankment is completely segregated from the road and has it's own set of signals, all of which I adhere to, unlike the pedestrians you see in my video.

I stand corrected, it was a red light on the construction wall. Pedestrians don't have to follow light signals by law though.

@@drummerjo571 Yeah, it's unhelpful that those are all red, they should have picked a different colour! I agree, you're not going to get arrested for walking out on a red man, however there's a reason it's red and the Highway Code is clear that the red man means "do not cross". It's a safety issue. If you're going to cross at a red, at least look and check nothing is coming first.

Hi Ryan, I'm doing a university project looking at developing a product for cycling safety in London and we are interested in doing an interview with you if possible on your daily journey and difficulties. Would this be something you're interested in/ available to do? Thank you!

Motorists on the otherhand predict the slower moving pedestrian and take account of this. All I am seeing here is a cyclist going against the clock and not accounting for the unpredictability of others

And that is why some 450 to 500 pedestrians are killed by motor vehicles each year, and only one or two by cyclists! Pedestrians treat motor vehicles differently to cyclists. If they see a car coming along a road at 15-20mph, they see it as a danger and they wait. If they see a cyclist coming along at the same speed, many just ignore it and walk out regardless. Or they don't look, they don't hear an engine and just walk out blindly. It is these pedestrians who are going against the clock, rushing to work and no time to look who are not accounting for the entirely predictable fact that there is likely oncoming traffic on the road!

I cycle Uber Eats with the branded gear and probably get treated the worst by Uber drivers. There is no sense of brotherhood whatsoever. Perhaps they're making an effort to take out the competition lol

I find the Uber drivers to be a real menace, often erratic and making last second changes as they chase their SatNav. Always give a wife berth. Safe cycling my friend, don't let them get you! 😉👍

As a year round cycle commuter I'd say roughly 1 in 3 rush hour cyclists are utterly selfish assholes. I get the impression that if you followed them home, most of them would have an Audi on the drive.

I reckon if you obeyed all signs to the letter as a London pedestrian you might get to work around next week.

I rarely cross at the crossings myself, normally quicker to wait for a gap in the traffic and no through (checking for oncoming cyclists first of course)...
