they could add torches as the old helmets had mounts but the brigade decided not to purchase them.

They failed to show the maroon-ish coloured kit that came after the navy set shown at 1-38 in the video. Shorter jacket and leggings with a 'cargo' pocket on the right leg if memory serves correctly. Seems to me that yellow would need to be cleaned a lot more frequently than some other options but, the maroon stuff I last used was leased from a company who were also supposed to be responsible for its cleaning/repair. That may have changed by now.

My dad joined the Lothian & Borders fire brigade in 1975 he had the wool tunic and yellow leggings but he had a black helmet before the switch to yellow

Even the old tunics where designed with some level of practicality in mind, the rubber leggings would have been useful around large volumes of water and the bright colours make you stand out. However the newest ppe is leaps and bounds ahead of what they had 30 years ago.

@@oscarosullivan4513 it is, wool doesn’t burn easily. If your out fighting a Bushfire they recommend wearing something made out of wool or something that’s not synthetic fibers as the plastic in them will melt and stick to your skin.

Like you, I also know how easily they caught fire. I met a guy who told me (almost bragged) that he worked for the LFB and was responsible for having those leggings issued to operational firemen. I took pleasure in telling him exactly what I, and most of the guys I worked with, thought of them. He didn't like it, but it made me feel better.

In portugal firefighters do paramedics work ambulances and everything and they are not paramedics basic training and training to do pcr and no equipment to be honest only a polo and trousers

I wanted to do a public services course but I was told it was hard to be employed as a white male, they said they would rather employ females or ethnic minoritys even if you were more equipped for the job.

Felix Walker One of my friend who is a Firefighter in London were forced to accept in their Brigade unfit womens despite them failing the tests because diversity, so what they did, they ignored them and avoided them, weeks later they were transferred to another Brigade after complaining why the Mens aren’t inclusive enough.He told me they rely on each other to save each other and as Mens, relying on a female who have failed entry tests, unfit to fight any fire and risks, they can’t let them in.

Don't believe the lies, yes brigades are trying to increase minority group numbers with each recruitment campaign. But NO-ONE is changing the standards, candidates either make the grade or do not it's that simple.

@@oscarosullivan4513 With 4 watches, sickness, and holidays, it is not as simple as it sounds. The need for replacement uniforms that get soaked and filthy after a single incident makes matters even more complex. Uniform items constantly circulate, but are always fresh from the cleaners. Boots are the only real exception. Underwear items are also personal and the firefighters responsibility.

@@heli-crewhgs5285 you're not wrong, if anything it was worse than the london fire brigade in the 80s, in south australia the fire fighters only had a coat and boots along with the helmet for call outs the trousers were only normal work trousers for everyday use.

@@denzz8687 I was a volunteer but we had rubber boots and at least we didn't have plastic trousers like the UK, but overalls that were fire resistant upto 5 washes. However, I went out in 1990s and bought my own firefighting clothes and boots and helmet, even before firefighting gear was a real thing. I got told off at fire scenes for not wearing proper uniform. Today that uniform but with some improvements are worn. I kind of miss the duck bill helmet. lol

The plastic leggings and the rubber gloves were the real issue in a woollen tunic era and also into the early nineties. If you went in there, you were certainly gonna lose them, because these tended to soften up and melt.

Such a shame about the brown colour. Looks naff and shows the dirt. The UK has always made a satorial mess of uniforms: France, the USA and Italy all produce practical kit that also looks good.

Having the uniforms show dirt and debris from fires is best, firefighters are more at risk of developing illness from being exposed to it, so if the dirt is more visible, you clean it to reduce chances of that.

its insane, my dad is a fire fighter in Lancashire and they had the new helmets 10 years ago. also, even tho London has so many more tower blocks where you need a long lasting BA (breathing apparatus) London only has about 30 mins where Lancashire you get a good 50 mins out of the BA sets if you stay calm. Its insane to think about it as well when you hear stories from firefighters in Grenfel (pardon my pour spelling) saying they put off using their BA while in the building until they absolutely had too because they had so little air. Its madness!
