A bit irresponsible of the funeral director to rest the photograph against the coffin, surely they were familiar with the comittal method (ie the coffin sliding away) and therefore he would have know the picture would have fallen down

To be honest, I'd find that part of the service highly distressing seeing a loved one mechanically moved in to the anti-chamber, a pointless act, because the crematorium staff would have to wait until the mourners have departed the chapel after the service, so to reduce noise. It's best to leave the deceased loved ones coffin, casket etc on the catafalque and collect after all the mourners have left, then withdraw it to the anti-chamber or chapel of rest for the very short period before the cremation process can begin, if not instantly... Another point is that you can see the minister of religion press the buttons on the podium, this should be hidden from mourners has well if possible..

I know Golders Green is w older crematorium so the conveyor built system is very old school. Been to many services in the U.K. and they often just have a curtain close over the stage. At mums funeral we had the option to leave the curtain open and just walk up and put a rose on top of her coffin then leave out of a side door.

As a minister, I can empathise with the comments here regarding the movement of the coffin from the catafalq to the ante-chamber. It is something that I ask the bereaved about and their preferences. On two levels, I can make an argument in favour of the movement to the ante-chamber as it is akin to the lowering of the coffin into the grave at a burial and the closure of the doors or curtain to the placement of the cover over the grave. There is a certain symbolism and the seed of a psychological transition to the next chapter in this act. In addition, from a purely practical perspective from the crematorium point of view, it assists in reducing the amount of time that people will linger in the chapel and aid in moving them through to the area for viewing wreaths and sympathising with family members. This permits the staff to begin preparing for another funeral if needed, especially now with such pressure on crematoria across the country. Hopefully this helps to explain some of the reasoning behind what happens in these facilities.

The moment the coffin moved forward on the catafalque was deeply offensive when the photo fell down flat,that was unforgivable and added more grief for the deceaseds family and friends.Moments like that should never ever occur ,the undertaker I hope at least apologised for their highly unprofessional duty towards the deceased and their family,lord knows what the outcome was but even the vicar/ priest should have intervened as well a terrible but avoidable gross duty of care .

@Stripes nor do you, yes some Funeral Director’s are new to the industry but I agree with the commenter however I wouldn’t say it’s ‘unforgivable’ .. we are trained to be aware of these things, even the delicacy you use when placing items or dealing with clothing...do you work in the funeral industry?

It helps open up the taboo of death, too many people are willing to discuss a life born, but not taken away, not all families can attend funerals, so recording them lets them share the service.

The music, the slaves song, was beautiful. It is a piece of music my husband has requested for his funeral. I also like the other music as well. Classical music is always acceptable. My deepest condolences to the family.
