London gangster Marvin Herbert tells his story.
An ex-offender with 21 convictions for 76 offences beginning when he was 13, Marvin was also among four people on trial accused of helping Dale cregan and Jermaine Ward stay at large after the murder of David Short in Droylsden in August 2012. Marvin renounced his criminal lifestyle after he was shot multiple times by a member of a British drugs gang in a daylight attack in Marbella. He was shot in his eye, groin, arm and leg and was told by doctors that he would never walk again.
“At that specific moment in his life He realised that his existence had been pointless and meaningless. Marvin decided that because He was fortunate to be kept alive, He would have to change dramatically. Not just for himself but for his kids, to guarantee that they had him in their lives for years to come.

I'm shocked at the confusion he still displays towards the way he was treated by his dad. He doesn't understand that his dad is responsible for the majority of bad events in his life. He wasn't preparing him to deal with life, he was ensuring his sons life would be every bit as bad as his own. Terrible.
@TheFBATruth

Genuinely think this is the best podcast so far. Marvin tells his story so clearly and with so much details. Seeing how upset he gets when talking about what his dad did, you can tell why he can recall it so vividly. It’s no surprise he became the ruthless person he did. Glad he’s turned it around and he seems like he’s really in the a solid frame of mind and a genuinely nice guy.

I found this channel after following you on Twitter. The style of interviewing is impeccable, you clearly have a skill at making them feel at ease. You let them tell their stories in their own way, this gives your shows authenticity. You don’t direct, yet you gently input and encourage your interviewees to continue speaking through their trauma. Every interview I have watched has been REAL, real life, real shit, real everything. Your guests are brave and the stories raw. I applaud you Mr English. This story is incredible. I’ve listened to a lot of interviews on KZbin this year on this channel and a few others. I had this on in my lorry on the M25 this morning and with my ear glued to the speaker. This man is as tough as they come but he is as sharp as a tack. Super intelligent and as hard as nails. Well done for going in a new direction and using your gift for good. It was emotional when he you said seeing a letter addressed to you meant so much. I saw people wanting that gangster lifestyle when I was young and I never wanted any part of it cos of sleeping with one eye open isn’t gonna be good for your well being. Men like you are made by the beatings you get when your boys. It’s so sad. Abuse is a terrible thing and does huge damage which ripples into so many other lives. I hope you’re well. 🍻

When he started talking about his dad it hit home. Think how many people out there in the world who struggle with mental health now because of the inbalance of love from their parents. This man just made me shed one single tear from my right eye. Alot of the time i feel like im useless and not worthy of doing anything great. And I wonder if i had a good loving home with 2 parents would that have made me a better man than i am today. A lost cause trying to fit into a world were you dont feel wanted or constantly need reasurrence to remind you people care about you. Weak, Inadequate, Worthless, a few words to sum up how alot of us feel. Man/Woman or child. Any parent reading this who is guilty of not being there for there kids then sort yourself out and make an effort. Try for your kids cause they need you. 1 parent isn't good enough. We all need a good Male and Female role model to look up to. Right now its daytime and im sitting in my room with a sheet covering the window feeling anxious. And that's the truth. My dad was a crack head my uncle was a brown head and mum left me with granny when i was 6. Dads dead now uncles still on brown ponsing of granny. And you know something everytime i hear my uncle come in my grannys house it ruins my day. Still till this day. Im not writing this to make anyone feel sorry for me. Im writing this so hopefully it raises awareness with the people who need to see it. Theres only one good thing that came out of what i just said and that is that i don't and won't treat anyone the way i was mistreated. Long lasting damage that puts a spanner in everything you try to do right in life. Think about it before you leave your kids to fight there own battles. One last thing i will say is when i smoke a spliff all that goes out the window for the time being. Lol apologies for the long ass comment. Im done.

What an amazing interview. Really appreciate MH's honesty and vulnerability - and JE's ability to listen without interrupting. A real insight into the connection between trauma, criminality and violence. Very sad. Thanking your dad for the beatings just before he died was a way of protecting yourself from the emotional pain of having someone you love hurt you so badly. His violence didn't help you cope with the rest of the trauma you faced - it caused it. But he must have experienced the same ; he was just acting out his own trauma. Hopefully the cycle will be broken with your children.

The best podcast I’ve ever listened to..... Genuine, honest, vulnerable and game is madness. Good interviewing in letting him speak rather than promoting, bragging about his own shiz. Trauma man, creates an ego to protect yourself....then you realise you can’t trust anyone....two kind souls.

Pounding a little kid with a closed fist and burning him on the stove. I cannot imagine. The fact that he admired and loved the man that traumatized him is a level of internal conflict I just can’t comprehend. It’s really inspiring to see him turn his life around and use his experience for good. Marvin’s story has restored some of my hope for humanity.

Best one I’ve seen yet!! Raw! Hands down! From personal experience. The hardest people that demand “respect” and would skin you alive are people who wear their heart on their sleeve. Intense emotion like he has. Comes off as genuine and not egotistical. Also the most clever. Coming from someone who’s similar. Long Beach, California. No play ground.

It's easy to fall into that life and tell yourself you are a man living by the rules and the code, but it takes a real man to admit he is wrong and what he has done is wrong. That life has given you the chance to be a positive influence and stop kids falling into the same trap! Great podcast and interesting story well done Marv for changing your life and I hope you can be the catalyst to help change the lives of many, many of these kids going forward!

For a man to thank his father who is on his death bed for the horrific beatings that he endured as a child blows my mind. But that was the world that he lived in and most of us could never understand. However, God works in mysterious ways and I’m so glad that this man has turned his life around. I hope his voice saves many who would have gone down that same path. God bless him.🙏🏼💗

Marvin, I’ve always had the philosophy off a leopard never changes it’s spots. That one interview has totally changed my view, people can change for the better. You really should do a book mate, and what an interviewer you are James, It shows your professionalism on how you keep the lime light away from yourself and how you can adapt to different characters, put your Glasgow slang for mr ferris and blink, then remove it for non Scottish, that’s how you put someone in their comfort zone. Amazing stuff 👍
