Last time I was on Oxford street the sidewalks were packed and there was hardly any room to walk, so speaking as a tourist who doesn't drive in London I think, yes, it would be a good idea to pedestrianize Oxford street. They pedestrianized Times Square in NYC and that seems to have turned out well.

Love the idea of pedestrianising it. It would make it a really pleasant experience for shoppers, particularly if they green it out as well. However a proper, thorough feasibility study should be done to ascertain how much impact it will have on surrounding streets. Also it's a pivotal bus route, you wouldn't want to marginalise those people who rely on busses to get to and from here.

It definitely needs pedestrianising. Most main shopping streets and High Streets across the UK and Europe are pedestrianised. London's Oxford Street had lagged behind. Pedestrianising would make the area much quieter, safer and nicer to shop in.

Always thought it was weird it wasn't pedestrianised yet! Most shopping streets are in Australia but also noticed a lot in various other cities in the UK too

A more realistic solution is the widening of pavements and the restriction of the street only to buses, taxis, cyclists and special vehicles like ambulances. The tarmac could be replaced with cobblestones but still be used by busses and taxis, cyclists during weekdays. During weekends Oxford street could be closed to traffic and be pedestrian friendly.

Hell yeah! Shopping in oxford street is such a hassle... way too crowded sidewalks, really loud, poor air quality and just not a nice experience. If they make it pedestrians only I will maybe consider going on a Shopping spree there^^

It should be but I feel there should have been a cycle superhighway included.

As a cyclist from a city which wants to supposedly be or be seen to be more bicycle friendly and lower it's vehicle emissions the bicycle could have been the one concession to the rule. A cycle lane wouldn't have taken up much room. It feels safer than pushing the cyclists further out with the rest of the traffic. I can see that banning bicycles means there's no excuse for the pedi cabs to be along that section. Unfortunately you tend to get people walking in cycle lanes or just stepping out in front of you cause they don't hear you or are fixated with a smartphone.

I'm in two minds. Pedestrianisation would certainly free up space for people and cut the noise and air pollution. However I do worry they'll then clog it up again with street furniture/seats outside restaurants etc. At the same time I can't see the existing roads being able to cope with the re-routed traffic.

As a Canadian, maybe I don't have an opinion. But, I say yes. Stop motor traffic and make the city more pedestrian (LOL, see what I did there?). We are doing something similar in Toronto here, where part of our King St is now closed to motor vehicles, but open to what we call Streetcars (what you call Trams). Oh and Syrus, dude, could that bus bet any closer?

Yes to pedestrianising Oxford St, and double yes to Crossrail/Elizabeth line being called the "Syrus Line!" *That* should solve all the arguments! (Yeah, right, I know...) How about a video explaining what London "Circuses" are? (And I don't mean the ones with so-called animals) "You can follow me on Social Media as long as you don't expect me to be in your Circus!" Wait - that sounds rude!!! (LOL! I've done it again!!)

Where's the traffic going to go ? Same traffic on less roads equals longer journeys which in turn equals more pollution .Well done London
@CDN_Store
@CDN_Store 6 жыл бұрын
The traffic is only buses and taxi's as the street isn't open to cars. The problem is there's too many routes on the street so it's clogged with buses. It's only public transport being re-routed.
@nickadams3750
@nickadams3750 6 жыл бұрын
CDN zine So all the empty buses are going to be re routed on the the other surrounding roads ? If they close the 3 cross over points all the traffic will be forced on to Regent street and Park Lane north and south Wigmore street will be standing traffic with all the buses having to use it . Have you ever tried to navigate London when they close Oxford Street for the Christmas shopping? The only outcome will be more pollution longer journeys it's not rocket science

It is true that the pavements of Oxford street aren't wide enough for the crowds of customers That makes some impatient pedestrians unavoidably rude. During peak hours shopping on Oxford street isn't a pleasant experience. Some say it is hell. I usually avoid Saturdays and weekdays between 11AM to 7PM. Shopping on Oxford street during Sundays is nice. Of course most local and tourist shoppers prefer convenient hours and Saturdays. For me a feasible solution for Oxford street is to become one way road with only one lane. Access will be permitted only to busses and taxis. Supply vehicles will be allowed to park on the enlarged pavements only early the morning. These changes won't move the traffic jam to nearby roads. Pavements will be much wider and people who prefer to use a bus or a taxi instead of walking on the Oxford street won't be unhappy. Above all the authorities must take measures with barriers against attacks of radicals. Oxford street is a prime target and I haven't see any actions for the protection of shoppers.

Of course London should city pedestrianised, but the councils will have to figure out how that is going to work because it will have a serious financial effect on the businesses working in a pedestrian zone.

The buses and other vehicles will just be pushed elsewhere if the area is pedestrianised. With buses and other vehicles having to take longer routes as a result, it will lead to more pollution so I'm against the move.
