I used to be a postman at mount pleasant for nearly 38 yrs . In 1990 ?? They painted the mail rail trains & platforms yellow to represent the Vatican"s underground . Bruce Willis did 2 days of filming down there for the film ( Hudsons Hawk ) He filmed on the Saturday / Sunday nights . The platform Manager who"s name was Greg . Got a photo of himself & Bruce Willis & the film crew . Greg told me that Bruce Willis was a really nice guy and the photo looked terrific . ................. Joolz love your video"s mate

My Great grandfather, William Finch (1858-1918) was a letter carrier, and later a postal clerk at Clerkenwell. His brother William (1857-1908) also woked there, as did my grandfather Leonard B.A. Finch (1892-1963). I knew nothing of this when I went to work at Canada Post in 1975.

I filmed the Mail Train back in the the early 90's for Nickelodeon, the kids TV channel, whose studio was across the road from the Charlotte St sorting office, a station on its route. It was still in use by the Post Office back then and was certainly a lot grubbier and run down than its present incarnation. I'll have to have another look at it after the lock-down comes to an end.

Most co-ops used the vacuum tube system. They led from each counter to a central cashier's office - the assistant put the bill and your money in the tube, pulled a handle and it swooshed off. A few moments later it would come back with any change needed and off you went.

While we are here looking at post boxes, after Ireland got it's independent back, the government didn't have money to waste on new post boxes, they ordered the existing red British ones to be painted green. Many are still in use today so you can see the British royal insignia (including the rare ER ones) on green postboxes around Ireland, and some have had the doors replaced and so have both the British royal insignia and either the Saorstát Eireann (Irish Free State), P&T or An Post (equivalent of Royal Mail) symbols on the same box. Last year, as part of the 100-year commemoration of 1916 rising, some of these post boxes in Dublin were re-painted red, as they would have been during the war of independence. Each box invited passers-by to free-text the word printed on the side of the box to the number provided to access a video clip showing what that post-box 'witnesses' during the events of Easter Week 1916.
