If you're back in Edinburgh anytime soon please try some of the chains like Premier Inn, and also look outside of Edinburgh a little - Linlithgow and South Queensferry are two nice places that are very close to Edinburgh (about 30 minutes by train), and you can usually get much better prices. I love Edinburgh but it's really getting too expensive to stay in!

Thanks for the tips! We chose to stay in Leith since it was closer to our friends. I think if we had a longer stay we would have looked harder for better accommodations

Just came across your channel a week or so ago and you guys are adorable. I hope you had a great time in Edinburgh! We were there with our family a couple summers ago and we absolutely loved it. Location is a big deal for us too - would rather deal with a smaller space than spend 30+ minutes on the tram/bus/subway every time, but that's just us (I know others don't mind the ride). We were also in the UK for Christmas just after you all and went to the Kings Cross market, too, and got some fun food. We love train travel in the UK (we've had good experiences on the LNER) because you go from city center to city center. We had one experience of standing from York to London after a massive heat wave but otherwise it's been glorious. Have fun on your travels!
@TheDetourDuo9 күн бұрын
We loved this trip, especially Edinburgh. We're on the same boat. Location is everything. Did you all go to all the christmas markets as well, or just the one at King's Cross?
@sarah-phillips9 күн бұрын
@@TheDetourDuo we did a few! And I actually just watched your Christmas market video! We hit up the Hyde Park Christmas Market for the ultimate overwhelming "state fair but make it Christmas" chaotic energy and it did not disappoint. We also went to markets at Trafalgar Square (but we had Christmas music playing when we went!) and Leicester Square for cheese wheel pasta. We also walked around Covent Garden and rode city buses to check out the lights on Regent Street and Oxford Street. We got a nice up close look at the angels/dementors. Walking through the West End in the evening was beautiful - so many lights! We were in York the week of Christmas, hitting up the Kings Cross market as we were waiting for our train and spent the week of New Year in London. Our family had been to London previously so this was a chance to hit up missed museums, walk around, eat, shop, and do Christmas markets. It was magical. If you ever get a chance to go to York, do it. It's a really cool city and very walkable. But I'm sure you've got a plan and I'm looking forward to seeing what you'll be up to next!

we went to Hyde Park after the fact because we had FOMO, and said the exact same thing about it. They were pretty strict about filming though so we didn't include it.
@sarah-phillips8 күн бұрын
@ Right?! They even warned me about taking pictures with my DSLR. No matter. It was fun and loud though we mostly just staked out a table under a heat lamp and had food and beer and mulled wine in the Bavarian Village. I'm glad you got to go! We didn't do rides but it was fun to be in all of it.

You two did great for that price in Edinburgh city center! We went last summer and spent near $300 per night for a room (smallish hotel) not much larger than yours. We could walk around the bed, barely, and there was a tiny entrance area, but still one of the suitcases had to stand up in a corner, and then mine went **outside** on a tiny tiny balcony 🤣.... I was very thankful for that tiny balcony and no rain that day!

By the way, consider a trip back to Edinburgh next summer for the Fringe Festival in August! It is a citywide party basically, with sometimes outrageous performance, spectacular!
@TheDetourDuo8 күн бұрын

@TheDetourDuo8 күн бұрын
$300 a night! Wow. Must have been a premium location then
@KatSchlitz8 күн бұрын
@@TheDetourDuo It was Travelodge Edinburgh Central Waterloo Place, a short walk from the main strip, so yes premium location which I agree can change an experience to become a Wow... but our booking was accidentally during the Fringe Festival 🤣... We did not know it was happening🤣🤣🤣.... and that was the reason for raised prices everywhere. AND we booked at the last minute, terrible idea always 😆... It was the time we had open, and we wanted to go, so we splurged. But I'm sure with all the transport that other options are available during the festival, or a room in an airbnb in a more central location could be great. We have had unforgettable experiences simply renting a room in someone's home (who had great and many many star ratings, of course)

I absolutely love train travel. A few years ago, I took Amtrak cross-country from Florida to California (4 trains and 46hrs). AMAZING! During my travels to Switzerland, I traveled almost daily from Zurich to Geneva / Luzern / Vevey / Lauterbrunnen. Some of the most spectacular landscapes I’ve ever seen. Last August, I traveled by train from Prague to Bratislava and into Budapest and had a fantastic time as well. In 2024 over the holidays I took a trip to Japan. It was my first time there and I traveled by Shinkansen bullet train almost every day. Not only the fastest trains I’ve ever been on, but some of the cleanest.
@TheDetourDuo7 күн бұрын

1. Nooo that train toilet (while it could certainly have been a lot worse) was not okay! I mean, it was splattered with urine, wasn't it? Train toilets in the Netherlands are often like that too and I just wish everyone would just sit down properly or lift the seat! 2. Oof, a whole week sleeping in that tiny room! Just promise me that if you need a bit more comfort as you get older, you don't classify it as 'too bougie for your own good' 😅 3. Ooh that wrap sounds amazing... Looking forward to the next vid!
@TheDetourDuo8 күн бұрын
Yeah, I knew I should have done the tour right when we boarded. Men trying to pee on a moving train = messy 🤢 lol. To give it credit, the bed was comfy and we didn't spend a lot of time in the room. I think that's why we can justify living like that, but I do miss having an entire house in Southeast Asia for the same price we paid for this. We'll probably never go out of our way for the 5-star experience, but I think a little more comfort will be in the cards as we start to grow our channel and income more 😅

Leith isn't the city centre though, it's the east side of town. In the city centre, I'm not even sure you'd find a hostel for that price.
@TheDetourDuo8 күн бұрын
Yes you are correct. I was speaking in general when I mentioned we always look for cheapest cost near the city centre. This particular instance we wanted to stay in Leith because we wanted to be closer to our friends that live here. Should have mentioned that in more detail

Not at all. There is a section in the front of each train car for oversized luggage, and there are luggage storage closets in-between cars. As you board, someone will be there to assist with sorting out that kind of stuff.

Done that many times (including a nightmare journey where I had to stand for 3 1/2 hours), never again (and I travel for free), I'd sooner fly (flights are from £28) it's far more convienent
@TheDetourDuo9 күн бұрын
That's fair. We like the experience of taking the train. And we always find that that £28 price tag looks good until you have luggage, lol
@tonys16369 күн бұрын
Two plus hours travelling to the airport plus an hour before the flight departure minimum and the travel from the destination airport to the city. When Kings Cross is an hour away and £54 is cheaper than a flight if one has large luggage or worse a case heavier than 20 kg and has to be checked in, more £'s. Airport parking is very expensive but one can walk or get a bus to one's local station. The whole train rarely gets crowded to not be a free seat somewhere, avoid peak period travel. Board as soon as possible not the last seconds before departure. Using a non budget airline is very expensive for the flight but a better luggage allowance and free food, albeit often snacks.

I visited Edinburgh twice, once was summer (2022); last time (2023)winter for Hogmanay. (Not worth buying tickets to get in but I did buy a really nice toque and still wear it) Both times was with family so the expense of a hotel was not nearly as expensive when shared. The second time my now 39 y/o daughter said she wanted somewhere ‘nice’ and near the Royal Mile - as did her older sister and BIL. We had two rooms that included breakfast. Travelling alone I usually went for hostels until fairly recently. Now, at 67, I am travelling less and trying to be kinder to myself if I need to stay somewhere.
