Fully supported digital signalling on the longest straight bits should be able to bump the speeds up to 140mph, possibly shaving a further 5 minutes off.
@dglcomputers14985 жыл бұрын
Quite, there were plans to use flashing green aspects to denote that the next signal (or was it 2 signals) was/were also green and was used to test the CL91 at 140 MPH, but at those speeds seeing signal aspects becomes a real problem so whilst the 91's and Mk 4's could do 140 it was rarely if ever done "officially" in passenger service (there are reports that the HST's at least have done ~140 MPH back in ye olden days when making up time! The flashing green aspects, despite not being used for their original purpose, still exist, I believe. 140mph should also be possible on the GWML as that is quite straight and possibly on the WCML with tilting stock (the CL390 pendolinos can do 140 I believe)

@@dglcomputers1498 On the WCML, after Hampton-in-Arden the flashing green indicates divergence from mainline at posted speed limit. After that signal, ahead of Birmingham International, there are high speed points to send trains to/through the selected platforms.

*They were talking of this with HST 40 Years ago, West Coast Route Pendolino can travel up to 140MPH ! - Snails Rate of Progress.*
@rossarmstrong67315 жыл бұрын
@@GrrMeister The problem was the level of complexity on the WCML which prevented them from doing this at a reasonable cost. Remember, costs had already spiralled out of control during the line upgrade as they found more work that needed doing as they kept digging through the old infrastructure. And even then it wasn't fully completed the first time around. Blame Railtrack and government for that one, and the heavily fragmented nature of the rail and maintainence regime of the time. Trent Valley straight could possibly have entertained a speed increase of up to 140mph using the flashing system but again, cost, complexity all come into play here. Eventually it will be done but that may not be for another decade or so. On the ECML however, digital signalling is more likely to happen sooner, particularly at the London end.

Thanks for posting this Geoff. They are an amazing train, and they look fabulous. Well done to everyone involved in the project, you can all be proud of yourselves. Whenever I see them in York station on my way to work it gives me a very real sense of pride and a thrill to think how far the railway has come in a short space of time. When I started signalling just over 23 years ago we were still using absolute block and mechanical semaphore signalling. Now I sit at computer screens, in a modern air conditioned building, like a 2 dimensional air traffic controller, controlling hundreds of trains using nothing more than a computer mouse.

They actually begrudge giving you anything more than a tiny can of soft drink and a packet of crisps.. woe be tied if you actually ask for a sandwich or a hot meal.. they really must tell the crew to give out as little as possible. LNER on the other hand cannot do enough for the first class travellers.. I cannot wait to go on an Azuma (fingers crossed for soon).

I'm booked onto one on the 01/10/19 - 16:45 from Leeds to London King's Cross - Coach H - on a 10-coach Azuma. Just like with the GWR Class 80x trains, I'll love the big window where the door is (the door where you alight the train). It looks like something classic and is bigger than on HST's. I may not too many LNER Azuma trains (nothing to do with the trains, don't worry) but I have big plans - whilst on my first trip to Scotland hopefully next year after doing a Scotrail HST on my first trip north of Edinburgh (to Aberdeen), my plan is to do First Class on an LNER Azuma on the 14:52 from Aberdeen back to Edinburgh. In 2021, if I don't fancy going from Oxford to Dundee via Birmingham and Crewe (Crewe where I catch the Caledonian Sleeper to Dundee) then I'll go from Oxford to Dundee via York or Newcastle in the daytime. From York or Newcastle I'd be catching the Aberdeen service that gets to Dundee around 19:45. In 2022 I plan to do the UK holiday of not just my life but possibly the most memorable UK one in history - Thurso. From Oxford I'd go via York and Inverness basically.

Those HST's look Fantastic, Geoff :P But you look bloody knackered. Look after yourself better, kiddo. Heard today's Flying Scotsman fly through Darlington & it sounded like a OO gauge train with Metal Wheels, as compared to an Electra at speed. Excellent video of the new Airfix EMU :D Nice one.

I searched for a train trip from London to Edinburgh for this September on the national rail uk website and there is no 4 hour trip. I searched for various days and hours. The shortest is 4 hours and 20 minutes. Also checked the LNER websites for September and October trains. The indicated Azuma trains do the trip no less than 4 hours 20 minutes. So the trip of the video is a very special one with fewer stops.

Did you not hear the MD say the 4 hour London to Edinburgh wouldn't happen for a few years???
@AgnostosGnostos5 жыл бұрын
Em Louise Fairley Correct. At 3:20 it is pointed that within the next three years with no stop at York the trip will be four hours. At 2:00 moment, it is written that: The 0540 departure service that takes 4 hours started in 2011.
The Azuma’s have been going past our house in East Lothian for some time, testing. They are by far a spectacle and quiet compared to other trains or dmus! Lovely, 4 hours beats flying Edinburgh to London!

Hi Geoff, I'm rewatching this great video and I realised how great it would be to get an update. Post COVID, did the projects David spoke of get completed? What does LNER Flying Scotsman look like today? Is there a northbound Flying Scotsman yet? Hope you're well.

Could you do a review on Greater Anglia’s new fleet of flirt trains? They are now running some services between Lowestoft and Norwich.
