York Station: I’m so important because everyone stops here! Azuma: I’m gonna end this whole station’s carrer

@@zombard1966 york is one of the most important stations in the country, also with at least 6 TOCs servicing it, it's a major interchange with services through the midlands, some to cornwall and devon, services to the yorkshire coast, services to west yorkshire, services through the pennines to manchester and liverpool, even blackpool, and obviously services between scotland and london

@@zombard1966 Its as much to do with the fact the trains have to slow down so much to pass through it (so may as well stop there) as it is being a major station.

It's probably a good thing that trains stop in York. A friend of mine in London once rushed to get on what he thought was a a train to somewhere like Milton Keynes, only to find, when the train pulled out, that it was a non-stop to York...

Sorry for getting in shot by accident Geoff, was told by my duty manager to look after the doors for the first ever welcome onboard, hope it wasn’t too difficult to edit :( But nevertheless a very proud day for myself and all of us at LNER, Such a good day to be part of and something to look back on when I’m older. Apparently I’m one of the youngest employees at LNER and I’m so thankful of what the company has done for me over the past year and what I have been able to do. Without a doubt one of the best places and best industries to work in, don’t hesitate once if you’re thinking about it would be my advice for anyone looking for a career in the railway. For those wondering next confirmed Azuma diagram is 1E06 and 1S23, there should be another diagram from 16th or 30th September, no details on diagram as yet. Here’s to the future #Azuma #LNER

Thanks Geoff, l had to watch this again this morning in lockdown, here in Scotland just to get some sense of normality on the railway and in life it’s self. There was a comment about Edinburgh being quiet and empty. Never did we think that eight short months later we would see the major cities of the UK and around the country being brought to a standstill. Your videos are helping to give me as a railway enthusiast the hope that we can get back to enjoying our trains, stations, railway staff and the travelling public again 🤞Thanks again Geoff.

Thanks to the actions of vandals, it once took me about eleven hours to get from Taunton to Middlesbrough - normally, I can get a train from Taunton to Darlington that leaves at a bit before 11 am and - if it runs to time - arrive in Darlington around 4 - the Middlesbrough train usually pulls in around half four and gets me to Middlesbrough just before 5 - if I can get my niece to meet me at Darlington and she can drive me there in her car, and she does it non-stop, I can be at my sister’s place around half four - otherwise it’s nearly 6 pm!

I searched for a train trip from London to Edinburgh for this September on the national rail uk website and there is no 4 hour trip. I searched for various days and hours. The shortest is 4 hours and 20 minutes. Also checked the LNER websites for September and October trains. The indicated Azuma trains do the trip no less than 4 hours 20 minutes. So the trip of the video is a very special one with fewer stops.
@CreativeEm5 жыл бұрын
Did you not hear the MD say the 4 hour London to Edinburgh wouldn't happen for a few years???
@AgnostosGnostos5 жыл бұрын
Em Louise Fairley Correct. At 3:20 it is pointed that within the next three years with no stop at York the trip will be four hours. At 2:00 moment, it is written that: The 0540 departure service that takes 4 hours started in 2011.
I remember working for GNER in 2000 when the 8am departure to Glasgow was named Flying Scotsman. 🏴 It arrived in York at 100 minutes, called at Newcastle then reached Edinburgh in 3.59 terminating in Glasgow after 5 hours because Scotrail occupy the faster route which prevented a possible 30 minute journey between the two cities. (Also it would have been faster than the WCML at 4.30). The Azuma is a lovely train, but the Network Rail infrastructure & signalling mean it’s no faster 20 years later, and we could serve York rather than waving at 30mph. ☺️ Doubling the Welwyn Viaduct & Welwyn North tunnels to the west of the existing twin track is the key bottleneck which has to be removed, along with the missing 4th track between Huntingdon & Peterborough. ✅

I'm booked onto one on the 01/10/19 - 16:45 from Leeds to London King's Cross - Coach H - on a 10-coach Azuma. Just like with the GWR Class 80x trains, I'll love the big window where the door is (the door where you alight the train). It looks like something classic and is bigger than on HST's. I may not too many LNER Azuma trains (nothing to do with the trains, don't worry) but I have big plans - whilst on my first trip to Scotland hopefully next year after doing a Scotrail HST on my first trip north of Edinburgh (to Aberdeen), my plan is to do First Class on an LNER Azuma on the 14:52 from Aberdeen back to Edinburgh. In 2021, if I don't fancy going from Oxford to Dundee via Birmingham and Crewe (Crewe where I catch the Caledonian Sleeper to Dundee) then I'll go from Oxford to Dundee via York or Newcastle in the daytime. From York or Newcastle I'd be catching the Aberdeen service that gets to Dundee around 19:45. In 2022 I plan to do the UK holiday of not just my life but possibly the most memorable UK one in history - Thurso. From Oxford I'd go via York and Inverness basically.

Many years ago, back in the 1990s, I took the Inter-City 125s & 225s from Kings Cross to Edinburgh. They all did it in 4 hours with multiple stops. Other than these being new, they take the same amount of time with only one stop. From the video, it seems that the top speed is 124 mph. Am I missing something?
@caw25sha5 жыл бұрын
They can actually do 140mph but aren't allowed to because of the external light signalling. Apparently drivers can't properly see the lights at more than 125. They have recently started improving the ECML infrastructure which I believe will include in-cab signals so they should be able to go at full speed.

I got the Northern Lights Kings Cross-Aberdeen a couple of weeks ago and I didn't get the chance to see whether it had a nameboard. Do the LNER and other companies still do that? I was planning a trip to Edinburgh this month and then found out the fringey thing was on. Postponed until September!

Headboards don't tend to be used these days; the paper carriage labels on older trains probably have the name of the train on them (certainly do on GWR), but maybe not the screens on Azumas, I would think!

But Edinburgh is so much funny-er when the fringey thing is on - the rest of the time it's just Edinbrrrgh

Not to be confused with the _Flying Dutchman,_ which would presumably never arrive at King's Cross or anywhere else, but would be seen all over the network.

Brilliant -as always

I assume, given the time and speeds north of Newcastle that it was running Electric all the way?

@Hans Kniezand Aye, but the electric mode on Azuma was found to interfere with signalling north of Newcastle hence the rollout of Azuma has been delayed a fair bit. I am assuming the modifications required to the trains and/or signals are in place to allow this service to run?

A number of Azuma test trains have been running from Newcastle to Edinburgh and back during the last few weeks. All the ones that I've seen have been running on electric power.
