This was my first experience of London as a child: up on the train from Croydon to Victoria, then walk along Victoria street which had a great deal of bomb damage, past the Army and Navy store which was one of the first department stores. Then we’d cross Parliament Square and head on down Whitehall till we came to National and Grindlays Bank at number 54, which was our bank. (Later it became the HQ of Harold Wilson’s interaction committee on the film industry). Then it was lunch at Lyon’s Corner House on Trafalgar Square, followed by a bus back to Victoria where we might go to the News Theatre there for an hour of cartoons, short docs .. and er news. Before heading back to Croydon
