The line that runs from London to Windsor via Richmond and Staines is, like many modern lines, an amalgamation of different railways from different companies. The first part of the railway from Nine Elms (the terminus that preceded Waterloo) to Richmond was opened on 27 July 1846 by the Richmond & West End Railway (R&WER) however, just two years after opening, the rival Windsor, Staines and South Western Railway (WS&SWR) re-sited the station and extended the line westwards to Datchet, before finally reaching the terminus of Windsor & Eton Riverside on 1 December 1849.
In 2009, a proposal called the Windsor Link Railway was put forward which would link up the South Western and Great Western railway lines and provide a direct link to Heathrow Airport. This would have involved closing Windsor & Eton Riverside and the nearby Windsor & Eton Central and building a single through station called 'Windsor Royal'. The proposal was ultimately rejected by the government in December 2018.
