WOW!!!! I fell down the youtube rabbit hole tonight and landed here. I remember first hearing this in 95 or 96 on CFNY 102.1 In Toronto. I'm pretty sure it was Alan Cross and one of his "music info and behind the scenees" type programs and I remember part of the back story was about how some rabid oasis fans actually uttered death threat to these guys for this version. They were SO angry that someone might do an injustice to Liam and Noel's "masterpiece". Frankly I have always HATED the oasis version but have always loved this one.

Chris Evans said on his BBC radio show in 1995 that this was the original song, recorded in the 1960's, and it was a very small hit most people had forgotten - then Oasis heard it and covered it. He then played the song on the show and have everyone fooled for a few minutes. He did it as a joke, he then said it was the other way round, that Oasis had written and recorded it first - that year, 1995 - and that The Mike Flowers Pops covered the song a few months after it was a hit for Oasis. This cover by The Mike Flowers Pops sold lots of copies and Noel Gallagher got a lot of royalty payments as a result. Mike Flowers said he met Noel Gallagher a few months later and Noel said to him: "cheers mate, you bought me a swimming pool".
