↓ LYRICS ↓
Hot summer streets and the pavements are burning, I sit around
Trying to smile, but the air is so heavy and dry
Strange voices are saying (What did they say?)
Things I can't understand
It's too close for comfort, this heat has got right out of hand
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
The city is crowded, my friends are away and I'm on my own
It's too hot to handle so I got to get up and go
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
You're not the only one
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
It's a cruel, cruel summer
Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel, cruel summer
Now you're gone
You're not the only one
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer
Now you're gone
You're not the only one
It's a cruel (Cruel), cruel summer
(Leaving me) Leaving me here on my own
It's a cruel (It's a cruel), cruel summer

This song brings back the eternity happy feelings I sensed, way back in the 80s, now transformed to Painful Nostalgia, of a Magical Time long gone. Where has my life gone? Now it's a cruel time full of pain that won't go away. I suppose I got my 80s music to survive it all. We had the best music. Long live the 80s in whatever form!

To me, the best part is the simplicity. The music video could have been made for a few grand, the dancing isn't spectacular (yet seems real), and the women are clearly having fun. As a bonus to a metalhead, check out Cry for the Earth Bounds by Ensiferum if you never have. ;)

Happy 40th birthday to Cruel Summer. Forty years ago today, Monday June 27, 1983, Cruel Summer was released. This song will stay in my memory forever, because it also embodies my attitude towards life in the 80s and that is what made the great music of that time so special to me. Behind all the energy and joie de vivre you can feel that pain and longing that deep emotions bring with them. The more years go by, the more clearly I hear this longing. She has always been an important part of me and always will be. Thank you Bananarama and thank you Cruel Summer. Congratulations from Berlin, Germany

This song was made in 1983. It got lost in tunes like "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, "Billie Jean" by Michael Jackson, "Africa" by Toto, and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" by The Culture Club. But it STILL is one of the best songs of that year. It just popped into my head for no reason today and here I am 🙂 That's the power of good music. It never really goes away.

90's kid here. I didn't get to be here for the 80's, but man, I miss the 90s and I love 80s content like this. (Plus this song is just awesome.) In my opinion, 80s overall had the best music so far, aside from the occasional exceptional band or song. Ah, life before social media and everyone and their niece having a cellphone. I got my first as a teenager and now I see 6 year olds with them and 2 year olds always on tablets. It makes me sad.

@John Sluder, it seems like music back then embraced family, hope and opportunity. We had a taste of technology but we didn't choke on it like we do today. We had a sense of unity until smartphones took over. It's really sad. Human emotion is getting replaced by social media and then we wonder why our music no longer has life.

it was rough for me too. Was growing up, tough home life (mom was abusive), real hard time in school with kids teasing me incessantly... BUT.... I could stay out after dark for while, walk to the corner store at dark by myself, play outside, didn't have video games or cell phones, great music and TV. The 80's produced the best feel good pop music, not to mention the most magical music.
@bertitolino

80s music was produced in an open audio sound with lots of dynamics (hard versus soft sounds). They already used digital audio which were recorded in an actual room, where as these days the audio never leaves the computer which is the cause of the lack of high dynamics and makes for a tiresome sound image where everything is competing.

I mean idk the 70s started the psychedelic thing so 80s is a fresher feel on a slightly psychedelic funky pop

@@KNOWHOPE72 The 60s were The Beatles, the all time leader in record sales. Why because there still selling music 50 + years after they broke up. Add to that the Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix who set the standard for modern electric guitarists, Janis Joplin. Not to mention the great R&B & soul artists & groups. I love the 80s but please no comparison with the 60s.
