She was not known for being a musician. She was a spitfire of a singer/performer. Sadly about ten years too early and without the right manager/marketer.

radguzzi So did I and most of my Crewe. Down here in Louisiana the CowPunk look of Cowboy Boots and flowing dress was always a winner with certain cool Ladies...Long live Maria McKee in my dirty mind.

1stSaintsFan I was in the Air Force and stationed at Edwards AFB near LA I got to see LJ perform in LA and when I moved back to New Orleans that fall, I brought back their album and told my friends about them. They said if you like that, come see the guys that we're going to see tonight. That was my introduction to Dash Rip Rock and later on, Cowboy Mouth.

RobdaVegasMailman WoW!!! Love and have seen both "Dash Rip Rock" & "Cowboy Mouth" a lot over the years. I lived in Dallas from 1987-2008 and they both played shows over their many, many times. It was always great to geaux to their shows and meet other Louisiana expatriates.

Genius song writing from the late Tom Petty performed by a group who probably did not even realize the depths of their talent. Sadly underestimated and understated. Maria's voice and stage presence was mesmerizing....still is.

My mind cleared out much of the music of the 80's, but when I saw this one it seemed familiar. Then I listened and it immediately came back! I remembered the lyrics before spoken, and beat changes. This was a good one and I am glad to be reconnected with it!

Bought this as a single when it came out - still got it somewhere. Had forgotten about it until seeing it on 'Sounds of the Eighties' on BBC4 just now, although that was an inferior (IMHO) live, faster and less groovy version. Great song, and love her voice.
@strictlynorton6 жыл бұрын
She had that perfect mix of being a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. Shades of the queen of all that Linda Ronstadt. Terrific songwriter too although this was penned by Tom Petty. Great record and imo the best version of it.
this song was originally offered to Stevie nicks who passed on it so tom petty gave maria McKee the track and her and lone justice cut it which made the public more aware of who lone justice the band was. it put them on the map. although they never achieved huge success they were still a well known band in the mid eighties to early nineties. maria could have been bigger as a solo star if she had proper management and promotion.

I mistakenly thought the style was Springsteen,but yea,i hear tom petty all over this track.i dont remember it from the mtv days of the 80s,but she rocks ,has an awesome voice and stage presence and is really hot

Was just thinking I can picture Stevie singing this one. I'm glad it fell in Maria's lap though. In the mid-eighties, Stevie was half-assing it.
@rickyparker19902 жыл бұрын
This was a modest hit on the Mtv rotation back in the day. I was working at Sound Warehouse record store at that time. I even worked with 2 famous musicians at that time. Edie Brickell and Lisa Umbarger of the Toadies in Dallas/Fort Worth area. Yes Tom Petty did write this song! When i first heard this on the radio i thought it was a new Stevie Nicks song. If Tom Petty had given this track to Stevie Nicks instead of Maria Mckee im convinced it would have been a top ten smash. Stevie Nicks rarely accepted material from other people though which sometimes came back to haunt her. For instance she turned down 2 famous number 1 songs. The first one was "Call Me" by Blondie and the second one was "These Dreams" by Heart BOTH written by Bernie Taupin who wrote or co-wrote a lot of Elton John songs. But Stevie Nicks DID accept the song "Sometimes its a bitch" written by Bon Jovi that was included on her greatest hits cd. A good song but hardly top ten material.

Cactus Rose was great. I thought the production on the debut album made them sound like Fleetwood Mac and killed the Band. Such a great voice. Really disappointed she didn't hit it bigger. Would much rather listed to her than the Madonna's who did.

They were still pretty rootsy and on and bar room on their debut. She hit pretty darn big with her solo song Show Me Heaven 1990. 4 weeks at #1 in the UK, I believe. Main thing is she’s still doing what she loves. Plus, you can always listen to: The Western Tapes (1983) here on KZbin if that’s more your preference :)

A swell countr rock song and her look and character looks great, but can barely see it. Kind of wished they hadn't put a degraded fileter on it or shot it on an old crummy camera, as the quality is rough as it is. And just takes away all the detail from the viewing experience.
