I was wondering why I didn't see this video. Turns out I didn't hit the notification bell! For me it was the opposite. Calling home frequently helped me a lot! It helped me deal with a lot of stuff. Making friends with locals is also quite useful helps me learn Chinese even though I'm so bad at it!

That is actually a good tip, not calling home. It lets you let go and move on where you are.
