I use to live with the Ringling Brothers Circus. Red Unit. I say now, and with full confidence, that our elephants, and all other animals, were never, and not now in Retirement, abused. We loved our animals. The only thing ever inflicted upon them was the Brand Tattoos, used to ensure they, as babies, wouldn't be kidnapped, or worse. The first one we didn't tattoo was named Baby. Her mother had a very traditional Indian name, but we were not her handlers, so it escapes me at the moment. My mother would make tea with milk and sugar. Baby would steal her drinks on occasion when she wasn't looking, up until she was 13, when she would make tea in a paper cup specifically for her. She ended up painting one of the last Elephant Paintings before Ringling closed. We loved that elephant, and she's currently living out her adulthood in a retirement facility in Africa. All of our animals were treated like royalty, whereas the humans slept in closet boards, sleeping on metal bunk beds we had to seatbelt ourselves into on the train. The animals all around had the best veterinary care and luxuries we could afford, and none of them were ever beaten to perform. They were trained to perform, but none of our animals were ever taken wrongfully, abused, or forced to do so. I agree. Don't ride the elephants in India and Africa. They have nowhere near the accountability we had in Ringling, nor the outrage certain hypocrites endowed. In those countries, poaching and abuse is considered honest work.

I also heard that people chop off the elephants tusks and use those tusks to make piano keys and such. That's why when you go to the zoo and you see the elephants without their long tusks. It's not normal, a lot of elephants that you see in person aren't happy and live a very sad life, it's not fair to them. Actually the majority reason why they cut the tusks off elephants in zoos is to prevent people from going in to kill them which happened in a French zoo with a rhino I’m still of the opinion that if that person is ever found they should be impaled alive like Vlad the Impaler used to do that would be Dracula by the way

Ivory has not been used to make piano keys or pool balls on a massive level for a very long time in the western world. This due to both people realizing how f*&ked up killing elephants for their tusks is and due to the development of hard plastics in the 19th century which was a material capable of being molded into all of the products that previously required ivory. Similar to how the invention of natural gas lighting and electric lightbulbs rendered the need for whale oil obsolete. China is the biggest modern culprit behind the wildlife poaching trade, not America or England like people would like you to believe.

I find it interesting that in these Loving Reaper comics, the orangutang, orca and the elephant instantly know who death is compared to the other animals. It matches the facts that that those species of animals in real life are intelligent and aware enough to have a concept of mortality and forever like people do. Elephants will even have "funerals" for their deceased where the rest of the herd will gather around the body of the deceased to pay their respects and will even visit their family members remains from time to time like people do. Crows and ravens also have a concept of mortality and have been seen mourning their dead as well.

I feel so bad for riding on an elephant in Cambodia when I was 6 years old. My mom is Khmer / Cambodian and we both rode on an elephant not knowing the harsh lives they live in. I’m very sad.

The way monks and other respected trainers do is different. They raise the elephant with others allowing them to bond, and insted of bullhooks and stuff they simply train them like dogs. Through rewards and love. Moral of the story: Do not buy a ride at sketchy places

I went to Thailand when I was 8, my father and I rode an elephant while my step mother with her son rode another elephant. We wondered why they were banging their heads with a hammer so we got suspicious.. I wish I saw this sooner because all the elephant tried to do was get food.

But I’m just feeling terrible of how innocent animals are treated like slaves and how cruel our world is. I understand you. I recall an seeing an elephant and her mahout outside a temple I had gone to visit when I was younger. The mahout asked for 5 rupees to be "blessed" by this elephant (a light touch from its trunk on the forehead) and a fee of 60 rupees to be rode. As strange as it sounds, the sadness that this creature had was something that lingered around me for quite a while and this is coming from someone who isnt particularly high in the empathy department to begin with. I hung around for a while and got into small talk with the mahout and in the course of the conversation he noticed that I found his elephant very interesting and asked if I wanted to him to pluck a hair to keep as a souvenier. I said no but it still disgusts me to this day that he was doing this to such an intelligent and gentle beast who had no one to turn to but this guy and was being used as a tool. I dont say this a lot since I dont like people thinking I am fragile but after all those years I still remember that elephant and hope that all went well for her.

There existe places where you can ride elephant only if they want.If the elephant are not in the mood,they will put you down gently.And if they let you ride them you have to smell like poop and you ride whit nothing on them so they don’t have more weight.there cage are SO HUGE that you can’t find the end of it!❤️😁
