Hate to see you get rid of your original Digitone. You worked magic on it. I can't see much difference with the Digitone II FM Engine - just more bells and whistles.

OK so stupid question time, I am looking at some Elektron gear but not interested in sampling so looking at the Digitone, but the keys version is still for sale here as demo models really cheap. I currently use KSP and Explorer for keys but they just feel horrible. I have some nice gear and want to have an additional bit of kit that will do double duties. I think I have talked myself into buying one as: a) need a sequencer that will do probability and pam locks b) need a decent keybed c) need to be able to MIDI control my other gear without too much of an issue d) separate outs Digitone seems like the perfect choice as it will be something that will accompany my other gear, not be front and center. Have you ever used one and if yes, what are your thoughts? Loved the track btw, it's the sort of thing I want to create but my sequencers are not up to par atm. I could get an Oxione but the issue I have is a limited key ability. Do you think the Digitkeys will work in a similar manner as an Oxione? I know the Oxione is more powerful and has a ton of other features, but for generative ambient, do you think the Digitkeys will cut it? T.I.A
@substan_music2 ай бұрын
Thanks!! Since the Digitone is my absolute favorite instrument, I also bought the Digitone Keys at some point. Due to its unusual form factor, it is perceived by many as a kind of curiosity, but it is actually really great. It fulfills most of the points on your list with flying colors. Keybed is from Fatar and therefore feels great. At the touch of a button you can switch the keyboard between internal and external device control via midi (simple but ingenious). There are separate outs for each of the 4 tracks. Sound is of course always a matter of taste, but I just love the sounds that are possible with it. The Elektron sequencer is okay, but it hasn't really been up to date for a while. Especially when it comes to polyphonic sequences, you have to make compromises. Basically it is a monophonic sequencer that has simply been extended by the possibility to play more than one note per step. So you can only determine how long the chord plays on a step and not how long individual notes of a chord play. Generative possibilities are actually limited to probability ... so only semi-generative. For more complex setups, you will quickly reach the limits of the Digitone with its only 4 midi tracks. Where the Elektron sequencer really shines is of course the parameter locks ... the close interlocking between synth and sequencer. In most cases I get along perfectly with the sequencer and the work is very direct and fluent once you have learned it. It's right there in the device and you don't need anything else to get started. But it absolutely can't keep up with the OXI ONE or even Hapax (my favorite).
@dankeplace2 ай бұрын
@@substan_music thank you so much for the lengthy response, I do understand the limitations of the sequencer, I want to replace my KSP with a better keybed and I think this would be the perfect partnering. I was looking at getting an Osmose but that is twice the $ and is the FM sounds that I want. I am looking at percussive sounds as I have a Nord 3P Drum but I have had a bunch of drum machines that I never liked. I don't want an 808 or 909 etc etc, I want specific percussive sounds that are unique. I make ambient music so I think getting the keys would be a great addition for an FM synth with a great sequencer. So for the $ of the Osmose, I can get a Keys, Oxi (Hapax is great but too expensive here) and a Intuitive Instruments Exquis for MPE. I think this would be the smarter approach, I also have a Polyend Play which I really don't like for sequencing, but I have a 3rd Wave which is another 4 track midi sequencer with some wonderful tricks. The Digitone is 1400 here but I can get the keys for 1560, I think it's worth the extra 160 for the FATAR keybed alone. I have seen the Elektron workflow and I dig it, I understand enough to see that the whole UI is just something that whilst visual, is also easy, yet the PE Play seems counterproductive to me. I made a track with it a little while ago, then left it alone, then went back to it and forgot how to make a simple MIDI track. That's not how I want to make music. Keys it is. Thanks once again for the input, an Oxi will be a welcomed addition but keys it is 1st.

@@LordoftheBadgers the one I am looking at is ex demo so should still come with warranty as was a display model. I think this will be a great addition to my other gear, I want a hands on bit of kit and it seems the Keys does double duties without sacrifice of space. Love the minimalist FATAR keybed too.

@@substan_music ok good news is the store only has 3 demo models, I have picked the best one, comes with 1 year warranty, and they're holding it for me for 2 weeks before I can pay. I've never understood why the Digitone is so underrated ... and sometimes not even mentioned in lists of FM synths. Such a wonderful instrument !!! To be honest, I was hesitant at the time and wasn't sure if it was the right instrument (and synthesis form) for me. Now I'm happy that I've been proven wrong. 😅

@@substan_music it's assumed to be digital therefore cold not like analogue. But anyone who knows...knows... The dn is a perfect balance imo and the modulation on it is awesome. To me it's like the sequencer itself is the least interesting bit! One of the few synths I've owned which I can describe as atmospheric sounding with very little tweaking needed to achieve it.
