Honestly as someone who loves ARGs I feel lonelygirl15, though innovative for its time as basically the founder of ARGs, more or less has aged completely poorly and was an awful story in hindsight. If I had to rec a newer ARG, Daisy Brown is more or less a more refined version of LonelyGirl15, it shares a few problems and the props are kinda crappy [this is more apparent in the later episodes] but overall It's a rather great series with much more well written characters and coherent theming.

I burst out laughing at the Icebreakers Sours because in 2008 as a 17-year-old LG15 fan I absolutely bought a pack AND showed them off in one of my poorly made webcam videos I posted to KZbin at the time. What a flashback. Also love your love for P. Monkey. And amazing introduction to Jonas. I don't often use the word "dreamy" but I feel like I'm supposed to when it comes to him? As for the revival, I think it was okay for the show's target audience that it was spread across different channels and social media, because I witnessed firsthand how the core fandom had laid in waiting for ten years and was ready to emerge and dive right back in when the new content appeared. Certainly it would've been nearly impossible to follow for any brand new viewers, so I think they were pretty specifically catering to that old fandom by doing things the way they did. It was a bummer when the revival just stopped, though, because I'd had so much fun playing in that fandom again that summer and then it just faded away all over again. I do understand that everyone involved got busy with other things and, honestly, I blame the 2016 election a bit for bumming everyone out too much about the future to get back to this time and money-consuming passion project. Totally understood that in November 2016 and I still do now. But honestly, I just want to know what happened to Jonas! The cliffhanger they left him on in 2008 has haunted me more than any real television cliffhanger, honestly.

In the heyday of the "Slenderverse", people churned out DOZENS of vlogs, hoping to become the next "big series". Most of them were terrible, and almost all of them ended up being abandoned. MH and EMH were two of the only vlogs that actually had an ending.

Years later as an adult I saw a teenager wearing an obviously professionally produced Marble Hornets T shirt and we both geeked out and it was super sweet, it was extremely wholesome to see a kid going through the same niche little obsession with out the cringe of having to make their own shirt like I did lol

I am surprised that you, a fellow RedLetterMedia fan, did not mention their theory that one of their early movies inspired Slender Man. Even down to where the movie would have aired on cable and where the creator lived. They had a movie with a bald creepy dude in a suit who stalked a child in a forest. I know it's unsubstantiated but it is an interesting footnote in the Slender Man history to explore. They discussed it in a Half in the Bag episode.

I'll always appreciate LonelyGirl15. She was the first KZbinr to have, like, actual production values, and to try and tell a story using the medium of online video. In many ways, Lonelygirl15 is like Red VS Blue: she showed that the internet could support scripted story-based content, doing for live-action web videos what they did for web animation: Without it, and its followers like Marble Hornets and The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, we never would have gotten things like The Guild, Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and countless other storyline-based web series centered around high production values. Like RVB, it was a major game changer in the idea of making scripted content for the web.

I love these videos and hearing about early KZbin. Lonelygirl15 was just a bit before my time (I arrived on YT in late 2006) and remember the 10 minute video limit, video responses, awards etc. and how all those things were in videos. What I find fascinating about it that you touch on is how time-dependent YT media can be. Several video formats/genres can be totally destroyed and made obsolete by the switching/reform of KZbin's features. It's a real nifty part of YT's experimental days. Great work, Quinton.

Excellent video, I really appreciate this dive into the nostalgia. i was super into this show and its community when it was active, so it's nice to see someone talking seriously about it now.

i remember being like 8 or 9 and finding this and being like “what the fuck” but i was too young to really know how to go down a little internet rabbit hole so i never looked beyond the (several) videos i watched and forgot the channel name when i got older and couldn’t search it up myself. i never hear people talking about this, so thanks for giving me the closure i needed LMFAO

Despite that everybody knows it's fake and such you still managed to write a tense script for this video. I have no idea how you did this, but it worked for me.

Glad you've made a video about ARGs, not watched the full thing yet, but as someone who still keeps up with some still active ARGs (Tribetwelve and EMH), it's great seeing the genre get a mention outside its circles

16:48 Oh, I do remember the response content, including the obnoxious responses. But overall I think they removed a useful feature. As you said, it encouraged community bonding; and I think the spam could be fixed these days with the right algorithms. Also, having video responses encourages discussion and provides room for critical feeedback that is more visible to everyone watching this video. That way, it might even avoid echo chambers. Then again, that would make it hard to find an algorithm that can see the difference between legit yet unpopular criticism and responses that just want to cash in on the video's popularity.

I wholeheartedly agree. I think removing video responses did some damage to the community. The remix scene in particular.

You’ve been referencing the film in background for a while, and I think it’d be fitting if you did a review of the Beatles film yellow submarine, or some sort of retrospective about the film

You're bringing back a lot of old memories. I remember the response videos and how that lead to the "What the fuck bomb" joke that was all over the place. Talking about ARG's and vlogging, I think this video should have two follow-up videos: the first about Boxxy and the war between 4chan and 7chan, and the second about Frog Fractions 1.5. I think it'd make for some entertaining videos and comment sections largely full of "I remember those days."
