First and foremost buy a nice thermal lense mask, rent the equipment learn the game. Then buy an electric hopper, rent the equipment play some more. Then pod pack, carbon fiber tank (if you wanna save on weight), then finally a marker. Most places are using Emeks as rentals now and most players don't need more than that. Ask other players what they shoot and if you can try it. Most people will let you at the very least target practice at the chrono. Don't be afraid to make friends in your local pb community

I'm a weekend warrior and bought all the fancy stuff when we got into it and now I find myself enjoying the budget friendly gear more. Sort of "how much fun can I have with this budget setup".

I'm 63 years old & play once a month @ a field about an hour away from home plus go to several scenario events each year and I use either an Empire Syx or a PE 170R and I've never felt outgunned. I run a Rotor or LVL hopper at the home field and a Spire IR with a 260 shell at the scenario events ( if I'm not running my paintball tank Das Buzzard) with an Empire 68/4500 carbon fiber tank I use a Grill mask, a HK Army Zero G strapless pack and have a great time every time.

First time playing I bought a spyder and when I heard how expensive a carbon fiber tank was I thought that I was never going to get one. Tomorrow I’m picking up my new CS3 at the post office and still can’t believe it 🥹

It’s a yes & no answer. As I will discuss myself in a video, and in the past. It’s easy to get caught up in the arms race. But unless you are playing tournaments, you do not need to spend large amounts of money on gear. Mid range stuff is perfect for the weekend rec player.

Best upgrade to ANY marker is the barrel. Can make a cheap marker shoot much better/straighter

I'm the guy that took a break in the late 80's and came back 3 years ago and bought a PE Etha3 Spire hopper empire 68 ci 4500 psi with a empire E-Flex mask. Yup now I rock SP Shocker CVO and ERA with a ninja SL 2 tank and a V3 reg

I played as a kid in the 90s. My daughter finally got old enough to play and loves it. We just picked up a pair of Tippmann Stormers. She got an elite and I got a basic. They definitely get the job done. You don’t have to spend a ton to have fun playing rec ball. We honestly hated the EMEK PAL hoppers. Never had so many issues with a hopper. I’d definitely skip right over the EMEK and get a Etha 3m. Likely my next marker.

In the mid 90s, I started with a spider TL. I thought about buying one on eBay and hopping it up just for woods ball. Memories.

3 things that ruin the fun of paintball: a marker that you always have to work on, constant chopping of paint and probably the worst of all a mask that fogs. Buy a good set of goggles and take care of the lens, a reliable marker even a used marker bought from a reliable source and a decent loader. Being good at paintball is more the skill of the player than the gear.

I started 25 yrs ago with a Tippmann 98 carbine. Then an automag, to an angel and finished with my shocker. Want to get back into it so looking to upgrade to a shocker era. And just because i want one i will get the lux idol.

Still have my "tube body" pump from over 20 years back. Also have my slab AC and an Orracle AC all mech. I am planning on getting back into playing this year and been looking at new things and even for me the top tier markers are not worth it. Going 180R and JT loader. BUT not going cheap on the gogs and mask. If you can put the coin into safety gear.

I'm a weekend warrior. I've been on and off with the world of paintball, but I said screw it and bought myself a pretty decent setup that can allow me to do everything I can possibly want whenever I go. Etha 3, og Rotor, 68/4500 tank. In total I only spent 600 because I picked up my Etha used. You don't have to do that to get in but, you'll want to if you get into it. If you don't plan on speedballing ever, get an a5/x7 for a marker. That way you save on the hopper and you're somewhat able to keep up with tourney markers. Most importantly whether you go with the old 98 custom or not, just have fun when you go out there.

I went with a simple set up, I'm older and don't care about the best things since I don't take it seriously, I got a Spyder Xtra since it reminds me of the markers I had like 20 years ago, plus it's easy to clean and again I'm not trying hard just there to play alongside my nephews
