This has been such a great song for more than 60 years. For those wondering, it was written in about 1958 by two Hall of Fame writers, Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin. Lefty Frizzell first had a hit with it in 1959, and it has been recorded by an amazing array of great artists ever since. An instant folk song, as Dill put it. Y'all do it justice. Thanks.

Excellent job! I love your version, its not a sad as Johnny Cash's version. Johnny was the first singer I had heard. Its creeped me out as a kid in the 1960s. I suppose it was his lonesome sounding voice. Corrie's voice did it like a good story! 👍

This video made me do a history lesson, I very seldom have heard this song and, it sounded something like Lefty would have sang, sure enough, he sang the original in 1959, I never heard Johnny Cash sing it, even though, I am sure he done a pretty awesome version though. But, you know when, you hear a song with those moans back then, you pretty much can distinguish who sang the song that person’s song there singing. You done a beautiful version to a beautiful song. Johnny did the song in 1965, its on his Orange Blossom Special album. He definitely has the lonesome sounding voice for this song. Its used to haunt me as a teenager whenever I heard it.

Well... It is scary time--alright... and THAT is a dark cover... (Wilkin's spirit still walks; She and Dill wrote of a real pickle and they both (apparently) turned a solid hit into a solid hit...🦇 I wonder if they intended do it? It was to have been on top? All fer the better)🤨 Anyway... that lIte list is only a part of a whole ball of wax that's best left to light the Jacks...🎃. Now y'all have a Ha'...(ahem) SpOoOoOoKY Hallowe'en... Ow Ow AAhwooooooo...🐝🦉 Oh yeah... there's a bit more😳 forgot to say don't bother with tricks fer treats.🦉🦉 Tricks will just treat you to more cavities... and them are holes in ya... they can become great big stinking holes...as they get so big that rodents use 'em and that'll just attracts more rodents...Most of which have all got plenty of teeth. Ohhhh can they be painful.... so I hear. Anyway I'm getting too deep into this hole but trust me...I've seen these things mess up an otherwise bright smile.😁 Prolly best to stay wise, and not fall asleep especially if a Rabbit appears but don't follow it. Well... since this ALL started because of a cap and covers... I should recommend; stick to eating vegetables and fruit, but watch those apple trees cuz I've heard they can pose especially big problems. Sometimes those trees cloister all sorts of creatures for years and years and years and you'd never know it until they spill out like...Hornets and THEY don't make honey but hurt like Cash. But you best go talk to your Mom and Dad about that cus things start gettin' real confusion and criss-crossy like Eyes and Wyes Why's and lies birds and bees snakes in trees Adams and Eve's and Gardens and seeds Personally... I lIke green apples but make it a point to keep my eyes peeled for Eves with seeds and with Adams Apples cuz sometimes they've worms when they shouldn't. and THAT is just how the garden has grown when there's no rock for the roots to grab onto. Well... by know your ears are full of good-n-plenty but I hope you could still hear what I was sayin'...
