As a fully grown adult, even a 30lb draw is significant. Full English warbows were sometimes 160+lb draws, I can't imagine the strength needed to draw those. Hell, everyone things archery requires nimblnesss and dexterity (thanks RPGs and high fantasy literature) but the one attribute that defines archery is strength.

It can. Sometimes slivers of feather can get stuck in your hand, but that's generally when shooting off of your hand, and even then doesn't happen often. There are bow gloves to prevent that. Even worse though, is if you are shooting an arrow that is damaged. The arrow can explode on release, sending shards of it through your hand. Seems to be more prominent with carbon arrows though because it's harder to detect damage.

well they wear protection for your bow arm because sometimes the arrows whips against the inside of your out streched forearm. one thing you do need to be weary of is arrow length. and arrow to short for you has the chance of skewering your bow hand when you try to let it off. other than that your pulling hand really has no reason to be hurt, they use some leather on your pulling fingers so your not just pulling with your skin against the string.

No. it had no shelf. Like the turkish bow, yumi bow, mongolian bow, there were no arrow rests. Some did have a strike plate on the side that they did shoot with! To compensate for the lack of arrow shelf they canted the bow at an angle.

78FrozenCats It really depends on which age you are talking about, because while muskets were definitely much more powerful, loading them was considered dangerous, and took much longer compared to a bow. Not to mention they aren't as accurate since they had smooth chambers rather than the bore chambers of guns just after the civil war period. That being said though, while I am an obvious fan of the bow, I do appreciate the musket as the origin of the modern weapons that we have in the world today.

It may not be sound effects. Sensitive mics can pick up a lot more noise than we hear. I shoot longbows and have some medieval arrows spined at 55#. They have larger fletchings but are only 4" long and my bow is 52#. My arrows make that noise as they fly only not so much. We must remember Kevin is shooting a 90# bow and his fletchings on his arrows are 7" plus they are whipped on and that would catch the air too so they would make quite a sound. Spectators say they can hear my medieval arrows whooshing past and I hear it as the arrows leave the bow. I only get this noise with my medieval arrows though. My normal arrows are silent in the air. Dave.

@darthenigma9744 10 жыл бұрын
That video did not give the draw weight of either bow which matters, and no bow is more accurate than another it depends on the shooter. The only definitive thing you can say is that those bows would be more effective on horseback because they are shorter.

@darthenigma9744
@darthenigma9744 10 жыл бұрын
Historically the Yumi, Mongol and Mughal bows had a lower draw weight to the Longbow and that matters when we are dealing with penetration and on foot composite bows offer no advantage over longbows. Composite bows were also not very durable as they would fall apart in wet climates, that's why they were not popularly used in Europe other than for crossbows.

Hmm 200-300 meters. Unlikely I think. The furthest distance shot in modern target archery is normally 90 meters. Olympic bows are normally 50-60 lbs instead of 120-180lbs, however modern recurve bows will be much more efficient than longbows, and shoot much lighter arrows, so you would likely get similar effective range. Also in clout shooting (getting closest to a target on the ground) the furthest distance is 185 meters. Even if you can loose an arrow 250 meters with a longbow, your chances of hitting anything at that range becomes pretty remote
@konz2891

The point is that there's hundreds of them arrows going towards a wall of men, if only 50 hit, that's 50 who are useless now. More if the surrounding soldiers stop and help, which they will.

USMarineRifleman0311 That was found in mary rose in 1510. In 1510 was abandoned medieval heavy armour style so big draw weights was not needed. In Edward III. period was nesesary to penetrate heavy armour so big draw weights was required from longbowmen. Edward III. did not hire the Archers who were under 100lbs of draw weight. Every single Longbowmen was paid according to his skills and the draw weight of his bow. The more draw weight of bow was, the more salary he had.

Emmet Byrne NO he isn't the hand bows from the Mary Rose ship were up to 160-200lb draw weight, just because YOU couldn't imagine pulling that with 1 arm, remember these children started practising (as it was LAW to) from very early ages. The Welsh bow men as adults had 1 side of body much more developed with larger pulling muscles on their drawing arm/shoulders. WHY we were such a top rated soldier, we could fire 12-16 arrows per minute aimed. With ability to cause serious problems for the horses & knights on top of them. They also had perfect technique, they didn't so much Draw the bow, but pull it apart with back/shoulders/arms from within the bow as it was so large. They had 20 yrs and more of Experience, not to win a medal, to win the battle.
@USMarineRifleman0311
@USMarineRifleman0311 9 жыл бұрын
PYakMan1 No Im not. There was not a single bow found on the Mary Rose of 200lb in draw weight. It was a 100lb spread from a low of 80 and a high of 180 with the median in the 140-160 range. Also stop using assumptions as arguments. What we know about human psychology regardless of the reward and punishment mechanisms (extra pay and archery law)is that people generally do as they please today and they likely did back then. No amount of punishment deters criminal behavior. Incentive also encourages people to cut corners. Do you want someone 600yrs from now to assume we were the most law abiding people in history simply because we have a law forbidding virtually everything? My background: BA in Criminology with a minor in Psychology.
