We did a Chennai to Guruvayur trip with a halt in Coimbatore. The road from Ulundurpet to Salem have some stretch of two lanes. Frustrating if you get stuck behind a slow moving heavy vehicle.

I've driven to Guruvayur through both Ulundurpet-Salem and Krishnagiri. The Krishnagiri Route is longer, but faster. If you have a fast car, skip the GST road and hit NH4. The initial 100 kms has quiet a few diversions, but apart from it, you will be grinning all the way until Coimbatore. Not to mention, the Attur route has parts of 2 lanes. Having said that, it also matters what time of the day you start your trip. With the timing being right you can effortlessly cover large distances in no time. I prefer driving at night because you don't have two wheelers, pedestrians, animals, amateur cars or autos annoying you. Just trucks and experienced car drivers. They give way when you use the dipper. Much safer and faster.
