Great concise video. I especially like that you mentioned covering the viewfinder. It's easy to forget but when your exposure times get up into the several minutes range, light bleed through the viewfinder can be enough to ruin your shot. I cut a little temporary cover out of some dark plastic and I keep it handy in my filter case. Happy shooting.

Hey, great tutorial. In your example photo from NZ of the tree on the lake, how did you get the tree to remain so sharp and no blurring from the leaves swaying during the long exposure? Was there just no wind that day, or any other tricks?

Hi Joshua. Thanks for this great video. One question. The phot you took in NewZeland, how did you get the tree and leaves that still on a long shutter? Was that done in Photoshop?
@danielm0rk8 жыл бұрын
While I'm not Joshua and I haven't seen the photo you're talking about. It's usually a good idea to shoot a picture without the filter (or even better, a few multiple exposure ones) to have everything that ISN'T suppose to move stay still and sharp. Then you can mix in the long exposure one in photoshop.
@THELINK9728 жыл бұрын
Best question...exactly what I wanted to know. Even if you take other photos, and then mix them, won't the moving parts show all the same?

Quick question! First off, I loved this video. Mainly because I've always been curious about ND Filters and you did a great job of explaining things along with a little bit of silliness thrown in. My question come from what you said at the @03:34 mark. You quickly mention that we should cover the view finder to prevent stray light from entering. How much covering should we be doing? Obviously we don't want to physically touch the camera to cover the viewfinder during a long exposure. Would simply hovering your hand over the view finder be enough?
@herminigildojakosalem86648 жыл бұрын
Hello.Canon cameras (not sure about Nikons) come with a viewfinder cover (rubber, Canon made) that slips onto the viewfinder (recommended especially when taking videos). Look for yours inside the box your camera came in. Slip it on before pressing the shutter.

you can use phototshop to recreate that, it just saves alot of time to do it this way, something to consider is that doing it in post essentially lowers the iso

Hi! Thanks for the tip. Ive never used a neutral filter and was wondering Why do we need to cover the Viewfinder? Can you show examples of corrupted photos if not covering it?
@mjen9 жыл бұрын
I don't have any examples of corrupted images, but his advice seems sound. Your sensor is designed to take light through the lens, and typically long exposures are in the dark. The viewfinder is a giant gaping hole, so when your reflex goes up into "shooting mode" light is still coming through the view finder, though it appears to black out if you were to put your eye up to the viewfinder. Light could very well slip through that area.
@JoshuaCrippsPhotography9 жыл бұрын
galerienature, sure thing! Light leak can take on lots of different forms but here's a good example of what can happen if you don't cover the viewerfinder while using a 10-stop: svenstork.com/storage/cache/images/custom/Sven-Stork-Bay-Bridge-Light-Leak-jpg/medium_large.1408321806.jpg See that washed out look and weird line going across the bottom 1/4 of the frame? That's light leak. Cheers!

Awesome video! I like how it's concise yet informative. Do you need to cover the viewfinder if it's a mirrorless camera?
@JoshuaCrippsPhotography9 жыл бұрын
James Kwon Hey James, thanks! You shouldn't need to cover the viewfinder for a mirrorless camera since there's no optical pathway for light to get in there. But if for some reason you notice a strange, wash-out look to your LEs it's probably due to light leak somewhere, either at the viewfinder, or around the front of the filter. So bear that in mind for your shoots. Cheers!

The best part about this video is you can increase exposure time by stopping down the aperture. What this means is if you have less than 10 stop ND filter you could get a similar effect on 6 ND filter by stopping down the aperture.

Lost me at "dreaming of silky rivers, whooshing clouds and misty oceans". Lots of info in this for sure; takes some time to digest. A bit technical for the style of landscape photography an oil painter painting from reference images will need- possibly. But the artistic range to create images demonstrated with the use of these filters is very well presented!

Hi. First off great video. You mentioned stray light coming into the camera from the optical viewfinder. I thought the mirror would block that light? So how do you block it conveniently? I mean holding your hand on the camera may make it shake. Also, I presume this problem wouldnt happen with a mirrorless camera like the Sony A6000?
@JoshuaCrippsPhotography9 жыл бұрын
simon44 Hey Simon, you are correct that with a mirrorless camera it should be a problem unless there's some other pathway for light to hit the sensor. For a camera with an optical viewfinder there are a couple of things you can do without touching the camera. Some manufactures make little covers that snap over the eyepiece. Or you can just drape something over the eyepiece; I find a beanie or skullcap works great because it'll stay on even in windy conditions.
