The common consensus about Himmel's expression during his conversation with Voll is about his realisation that Frieren will suffer the same as Voll once he passes. Hence solidifying his decision never to explicitly explain to Frieren his true feelings to her.

It took me a bit of time to realize that Himmel thought of Frieren while talking to Voll. The micro expression on his face is soo subtle and yet telling. I think this is the moment he realized to not go all in and become straight forward with confessing his feelings to Frieren. He did not want for Frieren to become the same as Vоll - clinging to a vow she took to Himmel. It is even in ED's Milet Lyrics - Even without any promises/vow/oath.

Hell yeah. I love this scene so much. I have nothing but praises to Madhouse. We know all the amazing sakuga in this show, but I love how they almost gave more attention to these small moments. The scene you're describing is much simple in the manga. This is not a slight to the manga but is instead a praise to the production of this anime on how they elevated small moments that most would miss in their first watch but elevate the whole scene exponentially once you notice it. EDIT: Holy shit I just noticed how poetic that was since treasuring the small insignificant details during your 2nd adventure is Frieren's whole theme.

what frieren said to Voll was "Ja ne" (じゃあね), which is like "see ya", very casual. So I don't think it implies she is not sure if she'll see Voll again. The other phrase, "Meta ne" is indeed closer to "see you later", with a stronger hint of seeing you again

That's just what the English subtitles say, the subs aren't always 100% accurate to what the character is actually saying, the actual japanese that she speaks can pretty much be translated to "See ya" in the casual form (japanese has different versions of speaking the same words depending on how formal or casual the speaker wants to be)

It is strange, but true. My mother died when I was a teenager, and without looking at photos or videos, it is hard for me to remember her face or her voice. However, the love that she gave me will stay with me with the rest of my life. Her teachings have made me who I am now. With time, you end up forgetting details about long gone love ones, but what remains is the true essence of their memory to you.
@verc66273 ай бұрын
What Frieren does for Old Man Voll is a very nuanced and subtle act of compassion. When someone's memory is escaping them, it can be very upsetting and unsettling to be told of it at every instance. So, when Frieren finally realizes he truly has become senile, instead of shocking him with them having killed the Demon King 80 years prior she simply says nothing and let's it be. This sort of thing will go unnoticed unless you've experience a loved one developing dementia or something of the sort. It's an incredibly deep kindness she showed Voll in that moment. And seeing as he is at the end of his life, it will be another beautiful reunion when they reach heaven, no doubt.

loved Voll's segment, it's one of my favourite short stories, this anime does a great job at creating good storytelling with just a few minutes of screen time. Even her memories of Flamme are crystal clear.

9:42 Frieren just realised he wasn't joking about not being able to remember his wife's memories.
@druidicdwarf3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and analysis. I thought you were spot on this episode. For me the most painful part of this episode was the theme of memory loss - Voll knows he is defending the village that his wife loved, even if the townsfolk have no idea why he's doing it and he himself can't even remember. Likewise, the population at large has forgotten about Kraft and his righteous trumiphs, but they get to live in a world he saved. He's the sole carrier of those historic memories and bringing them into the future, just like how Frieren might be the last one on her end way into the future, perhaps in another thousand years. The most heartbreaking part is that Kraft had a chance to share his righteous trimuphs so that it wouldn't be so cruel for no one to remember their deeds, only for Frieren to pass. That, combined with Kraft's class change from warrior to monk, makes him one of the most interesting and tragic characters we have met so far. He seems way older than Frieren, and seems to have processed his memory and come to peace with how his companion changed him, and might have recognized that Frieren was in a similar process - she also had a good friend in Heiter who praised him down here- which may imply that his priest friend was similar only for him to not understand until later when he convered into a monk and became a goddess believer.

When it hits you that Voll and his wife are parallel of Frieren and Himmel's relationship. :^) Always make sure to remember your loved ones.
@kpetalis3 ай бұрын
Two things to note here. First is the fact that Kraft is ancient as hell. Many viewers didn't understand that fact when Kraft said that Frieren is young but the series establishes this in this episode as an undeniable truth using a very simple way to do so. The statues. All the statues that Frieren and her companions had are bronze statues. That is because bronze was much easier to use and work with in this era, in real life bronze was used for sculpture from the 15th century AD if I'm not mistaken. In ancient Greece and Rome from 6th century BC up until the 10th century AD the material that was widely used in sculpture was marble. But the statues of Kraft and his companion was stone. Stone statues and figurines were created in the earliest known civilizations such as the Egyptians. That means from 5000 BC to 1000 BC. And that there tells us that when Kraft said that no one lives that remembers his righteous battles and triumphs, he really means it. And this is one of the clues that gives credence to the theory that Kraft was the ancient hero that used the Hero's Sword to defeat a Morgoth level threat back in the Age of Mythology as I mentioned in a previous comment in episode 12, and returned it to the stone after the end of his battle. Because if you see in the statue he is holding a sword that seems to be a little too similar to the Sword on the Stone. And Kraft is not carrying a sword with him right now. And he is a monk. Monks fight using martial arts, not weapons. So why does he carry a sword? The answer is because he needed to. And this theory gets even more convincing because Kraft says that he believes in the Goddess wholeheartedly. The reason he believes in her might be because he lived in the Age of Mythology, the only Age that the Goddess revealed herself to the races of the World, and he used the Sword which was Blessed by the Goddess to become the Hero's Sword in order to defeat the ancient evil that threatened to destroy the world. The second thing to note is a misconception that many had about Old man Voll. Voll is starting to forget naturally. He is old and his mind has started to fail. Frieren is shaken from this because she has lived a secluded life and has never been confronted with the fact that the mortal races might forget things. The Elves of this setting are Tolkienian Elves, meaning that they are practically immortal and have perfect memories. They do not forget anything and can preserve their memories forever. Frieren remembers everything, to her a memory of what she ate yesterday is the same with a memory of fighting over a scroll with Flamme 1000 years ago. That is why she was so shaken with Voll forgetting that they had already defeated the Demon King. Because she understood that her companions would not always remember her if she didn't keep in touch regularly. She never really understood the need to be around everyone because she never forgets anything, so even if she left for 10 years she would still remember everyone and their habits and could reconnect quite easily after that time without any problems. But that is not so for the mortal races. If we up and leave for 10 years and come back to our old town, even if we meet our old friends again, ten years have past, we are different people, with different lives and experiences and lives. And we might have forgotten a lot of the things that connected us in the past. Our memories are not perfect and our connection to the people around us need to be reinforced constantly so that those friendships and connections to continue to exist. Frieren for the first time understood that when she left, she almost made certain that Eisen, Heiter and Himmel would forget her. The very fact that they didn't, that they still remembered her and cherished her still even after she abandoned them for almost 50 years without a single contact is a miracle and only now she understood and appreciated it.

The more I re-watch this show through your reactions the more I think that Frieren in Elf Years is considered Ferns age or even a little older to other elves, if that makes sense. Kraft points out that Frieren is still young and Frieren herself has her moments of immaturity and even after over 1000 years of living, is still learning basic things she didn't understand while traveling with Himmel. Another example is how Sein is looking for an Older woman, ie, a cougar and even though Freiren is over 1000 years old, she doesn't fit the category of cougar. So maybe over 1000 Elf years is the equivalent to a 20+ year old Human.

I think immaturity is unrelated to age in elves. Serie is potentially older than Kraft, and she is even less mature than Frieren in some aspects.

Or reverse because i don't know who actually started this. (for example that priest have a high resistance against dark magic and so on). It could be possible that the same Mage also do a Photo with Fern and her Family, cause it fit the time that happend. For my opinion, this Episode is the point were it is obviously the point you can sense that Frieren also is positively changed. Memories beside time is the most precious thing a human can have.

Most of the Japanese Western high fantasy genre is based in things like Sword World and Dragon Quest, and the Sword World ttrpg was made because TSR didn't like that someone was making money off of their D&D campaign in Japan, and Dragon Quest was basically Japan's console gaming answer to the madly popular PC gaming franchises Wizardry and Ultima, both of which trace their lineage back to when people tried to translate D&D into "computer gaming". So yes! Frieren is definitely of a lineage, considering Dragon Quest is almost compulsory education for Japanese gamers growing up lol

Frieren realised that even Old Man Voll, who she saw as a rock in her life, was approaching the end of his life. He was her link to the past, and this link was just about gone. So it wasn't just the realisation that he was getting old that hit her. It was also the realisation that one by one, her connections to the past are disappearing. And pretty soon, she won't have anyone left to talk with about the past.

We have finally arrived to this episode, there's a bunch of theories revolving around what Himmel was thinking or feeling, tho we all agree was Frieren, here is my theory and why it seems that it hit me harder, when he was talking to Voll i immediately associated his situation with frieren, how it was very similar but some how opposite, how? In Voll's case he is the long living being, and his wife the human, in Himmel he is the human and frieren the long living being, Himmel seen how much voll suffer not just for the lost of memory but also her, maybe is why he never confessed his love to frieren, and chose to be the one who suffer instead of her, cause thats just what Himmel the hero would do, and yet he didn't want her to feel alone nor to forget his face, cause he knew that she will roam the same places they oncebroam together, so he wanted her to remember him with a smile on her face, and not just a blurry memory, but that's just my take one this, and that's why it hits ao hard for me, now i too think of them when I look to the sky.

i like to think old man voll has alzheimer and his memories slowly fading away before his death. voll-oji said that they will carry the memories of himmel party to the future, but "memory" is an abstract thing. like people would remember flamme the mage, no one actually remember her appearance except two people (as of now). so himmel wanted to make statues of himself to accompany frieren into the future, so that she wont be lonely. he wanted to make him not just as abstract memory, but also to put himself tangible-- unfading. Before episode 14 that was basically also confirmed to me by him faintibg when she blew him a kiss. He was also always so caring, especially towards her. Love how all these hints were just piling across the episodes up until episode 14 finally confirming it for good (especially noticable on a rewatch). 7:45 I also like that Himmel knew the entire time that his relationship with her would not really work out, cause of their different lifespans and her noticing her love for him just to slowly for him to experience it in his lifetime. But he was at peace and ok with that and just loved her unconditionally and even built statues of him and the others so that she wouldn't be alone when they're all gone. :'-)

Old Man Voll defending a village for 400 years when the average total life expectancy of dwarves is only 300 years dictates his memories would obviously be withered through time. It would make sense he forgot the demon lord's demise, but truthfully, despite it all, he still protects his village. The fall of the demon lord has not changed anything for him as monsters did not magically stop existing, he's still defending. Living a relatively isolated life in a secluded village doesn't distance the idea he's simply not heard of the event, but it's possible his senile act is also becoming increasingly real.

I'm guessing that the time of Kraft's hero-ing might have been the equivalent of the Babylonian or even Sumerian age. When Frieren was Flamme's apprentice, it looked to be Greco-Roman equivalent times, and I would think that she would have recognized Kraft's name if he was a big hero at the time. And, if they saved the world, it would have to have been before the Demon King's rise, otherwise the Demon King would have been what they would have needed to save it from. There's also a clue in the fact that it was Kraft and a priest in their partnership, and no mage, because it was before the time of any human mages.

As for taking a week off.... I think waiting a week between each episode as it's broadcast lets you savor them in the head, mind, or soul(?). and the anticipation and so yeah. Take a week off! if not for mental crap then to savor each episode! lol, or not whatevah.

When Himmel met Grandpa Voll, it was clear that it was when he decided not to declare himself to Frieren, fearing the future and at the same time imagining ways not to be forgotten, he and Voll are in similar situations, but inverse. I wonder if Ctaft did not defeat some demon king in the past, according to what we learned, the demon king would be the strongest among the demons, therefore, what Frieren defeated together with the group must not have been the first, and will not be the last

And yet, the situation Himmel finds himself in is totally different, they are not in a relationship and the frieren is someone very distant, yet, instead of giving up, or feeling frustrated, Himmel only showed more kindness

Frieren didn't tell Old man Voll that they defeated the Demon Lord because she afraid that it might makes his promise to his wife to protect the village from Demon King army lost its meaning (as we already know that mostly look like the only thing keeps him going), even tho it's not 100% sure that would be the case but she learned to pay attention to other people so she doesn't wanna risk it.

I think our boy Himmel decided then not to pursue Frieren, on the off-chance she became stuck in the past like that dwarf. I'm sure he already realized how difficult that relationship would be, even if he somehow managed to break through the neutron star density. It suddenly became real. I don't know that Frieren would've turned out like Vol. Probably not. Regardless, Himmel still died happy despite not getting everything he wanted.

Yeah, Old Man Voll losing the memory of how his wife looked and the sound of her voice was sad as well as him thinking Frieren was going off to defeat the Demon King. But him having the dream made it a bit less bittersweet. What will Sein do? The statue of Kraft was cool. Just goes to reinforce Kraft asking what Frieren did before defeating the Demon King.

So many self-proclaimed titles in this series. The Legendary Mage Flamma called herself that as well; and it stuck.

How many people today could recognize an historical Roman from their 2000 year old statue? Humans forget history which is why they repeat it. Who can name their Great-Grandparents? EP 16 is the transience of human memory. Himmel will be forgotten as will his statues. But the most important question of today, is what is Water Proof Maschara? Match that with a new Flexie hairstyle, and this world is changing (for the better).

I genuinely think, old man would die peacefully, if Frieren told him, that they already defeated Demon King. Promise to his wife is the only thing that keeps him alive
