I think it's kind of on purpose, in most manga, the old experienced mage is essentialy a jobber for a "cooler" character, he's built up so he can lose and make someone look better instead. I think the author used that trope to make people underestimate his importance.

Yay! The exam arc! I know some in the fanbase have reacted less positively to this sudden change of pace, but to me these are some of my favourite episodes of the entire series. So much world-building is done, with so many great new characters introduced, that I just love all the amazing possibilities for stories that arise from these new chapters. And the overall character development is incredible! Especially for Frieren and Fern, though their growth is hidden behind the many flashy battles we witness. However, once you look past the fights, you realize just how much we learn - and how much the characters _themselves_ learn - over the course of these exams.

I don't think you totally got the reason WHY Frieren asked Lawine if she thought she was stronger than herself. Or maybe it just got cut out from the edited version for KZbin. But just in case, basically what Frieren was testing Lawine on, before she was okay with letting her go off on her own, was seeing how well Lawine knew her own strengths and limitations or if she was too overconfident and likely to do something or pick a fight with someone that could get her killed. Also, as we learned back when they showed how Frieren is always suppressing her mana to make herself look weaker, it's easy to assume you're stronger than Frieren and takes quite a bit of intuition and skilled observation to realize she's not the type of mage you'd want to pick a fight with. If Lawine was able to realize that about Frieren, then she should have good enough sense and decision making skills to go off on her own without worry.

In other words, she was purposely waiting there to kill the bandits that showed up. That's why Kraft says he was saving the lives in front of him which were the bandits.

The cool thing about these new characters is that in expected Frieren fashion we are getting an in-depth exposition and knowledge of these characters and well, if you haven't read the manga, there is a reason for this. All the newly introduced characters are great, fleshed out, and they are here for a purpose. That's a lot like Fullmetal Alchemist, in which no character is minor.

The conversation between Frieren and the two girls isn't to demonstrate the difference in power between them, thats kinda evident from the start. Frieren was trying to judge their ability to analyze a threat. Lawine had that skill/ability, so she was okay to go solo for a bit to scout the stille.

17:58 I like this about Frieren. That we have these slow paced, but very deep and emotional parts, then the more "exciting" action focused (like with aura), followed again by slow burn. It's also interesting how the show manages to get us attached and curious about about characters that have a relatively small parter (former with old man voll and the latter with Kraft).

Ubel is like The Joker... if the Joker was not an evil character. You can see it in Ubel's eyes though... She's definitely not a nice person. And her brain is more than a little chaotic in how it processes things. You see this more and more as the series goes on. Ubel is fascinating as hell, and I can't wait to see more of her!

There are almost no characters introduced that I didn't end up at least liking if not actively caring for. I'm a pretty rigidly moral and principled sort of person and I was immediately repulsed by Ubel - she rubbed me the wrong way on multiple different fronts as soon as we were introduced to her. I was shocked, later on, to have become attached to her and wanting her to succeed even when I *still* didn't agree with her mostly as a person. I wish she was different in some ways but, damn, the way she is written and the way she is acted... at no point did I want her to die and, even more than that, I wanted her to *live* and prosper - hopefully *not* at the expense of someone else ;D There are a number of characters like this whom didn't quite mesh with me initially only for me to feel for them fondly on getting to know them better. I think the only exceptions are Serie, that old mage that she trained and that Proctor of the first exam that was opposite Sense.

I love the interaction where Frieren asks Lawine if she's strong compared to her. Lawine demonstrates she can tell Frieren is hiding her mana. So Frieren judges Lawine is okay to look on her own.

I don't think Lawine can see through Frieren's mana. As stated earlier in the episode, Frieren's mana, even suppressed, is quite significant.

@@ObiwanNekody It's not that she's "seeing through it" per se, but it was a test to basically see just how good Lawine is at judging the strength of a mage or the threat/danger level of something/someone. Even with Frieren suppressing her mana, Lawine could tell she was stronger, which makes Frieren feel that Lawine will be safe to go off on her own without doing something that could get herself killed.

I got to say that even though I still loved the show, I was a little disappointed in the direction it took from here on. Up to this point it's felt really unique, and like a refreshingly new take on the fantasy anime genre. But now it suddenly went full on with the anime tropes. I mean, it can't get more shounen anime than a mage exam. Even the characters, like Lawine and Kanne, are really stereotypical anime. It's still really good, but a part of me wish that they had done something else here.

@@kamikaze.33 I am not. Actually, it's already been answered in this episode, to some extend at least. Sky is the domain of monsters and demons. Flying wasn't available to humans or elves until VERY recently (during heroes journey, Fireren couldn't fly). Ofc there is a joke of Fern having bigger chest than Frieren but it's mostly about actually not being able to see the sky in preparation for possible attack, which later happens on.
