This tutorial shows how to make a lovely statement ring with a large Marquis cabochon Azurite/Malachite and two 4 mm square Sapphire accent stones. This is an advanced sort of project. For materials, I used 18 gauge sterling round wire, 14 gauge sterling square wire, 26 gauge sterling sheet, and 18 gauge sterling sheet. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande.

Chad another great video and love the design. However you didn"t show the detail of how you dealt with the bezel for the end points of the stone. I have struggled with setting this kind of stone so was a little disappointed that you didn't explain this - any chance you might do a short video on how to achieve the best possible bezel on pointed stones.

That’s a good idea Norma! This particular setting for the main stone was sort of experimental for me. I had seen some done in similar ways with a split on the points, but I’m not sure I pulled it off as well as I would have liked on this piece. Need to experiment some more. If I had been using fine silver bezel strip, I would have thinned the very top of the bezel at the points to about half the thickness of the rest of the bezel to reduce the quantity of metal you are trying to compress when pushing it into the stone’s tip. Without thinning it, it tends to wrinkle and resist burning down:)

Thank you - I am reassured you have had issues with setting pointy stones - I guess it is a case of trial and error N

I love the stones you chose, although as a beginner/intermediate silversmith, I’m pretty sure I would melt those prongs at the end. I’m just curious though…did the ring turn out to be the size intended? Did the paper pattern account for the thickness of the metal? Thanks for all your videos, you’ve inspired me so much!

I just went and checked:). It turned out about 7.5 which is about 1 size smaller than I was aiming for. I added a little in length to compensate for that, but I had to remove more than I anticipated to shape the ends of the band to match the edge of the bezel. I estimated about 3 mm or 1/8 inch. Next time I would add a bit more:). Thanks for reminding me to check!

A marquise shape in stones is something I hate to do in jewellery. So far I haven't been able to get the corners nicely in any of my settings.
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing 11 ай бұрын
Hello hellobaby! This a an unusual way to do a cab setting. For regular bezels, try thinning out the very top of the bezel where the sharp point of the stone is just slightly. It reduces the quantity of metal you are trying to compress into a small area:)

Hello Dave. They are Fiskar’s craft shears. They are good for most things sheet. When I’m cutting 18 gauge with them it is pushing the limits of what they can do without damaging them. Here’s the model: Fiskars Premier No. 5 Micro-Tip Easy Action Titanium Scissors - Stainless Steel Fabric and Mixed Media Scissors - Arts and Crafts - Orange a.co/d/9dZoc1a

@@daveadams4973 I would wait for a local gem and mineral show if they have them near you. It’s hard to buy online. I do have a friend who does lapidary. You might check out his Etsy: www.etsy.com/shop/LPLandSilver. He cuts some really nice cabs and has reasonable prices.
