Long Marston 1985 Ultimate Street Bike Competition

In the 1980's Superbike magazine held a series of drag races for road bikes at venues including Long Marston.
This is one of the 1985 events, I am race number 645. My bike is a 1980 Suzuki GSX1100 which has been tuned by Speed Products of Munster Germany with a 1168cc overbore, gas flowed head, K&N filters, Harris 4-1, oil cooler, uprated oil pump and the day before this race I fitted an electric fuel pump to prevent fuel starvation which involved a carb modification. I fitted the bigger jets in the paddock on the day of the race with my assistant mechanic Simon Miller. I rode it to the meet from Germany and then to Devon and back to Germany.
There is more video of other bikes and riders. The guy at the end on the heavily modded GSX was the overall winner, the turbo and nitrous injection seeing to that!

This brings back some memories, to say the least. Was here on this weekend enjoying my first taste of competition. It was a real eye-opener at the time, that's for sure! Was never gonna trouble the fast boys (185th on a Laverda Jota...). But it paved the way for another 20 years of Bike Sport for me, and it all started here! Cheers.

Glad you enjoyed it! There were some very quick bikes there but some of them arrived by trailer /van. I rode mine 600 miles to the meet, bought and changed main jets in the paddock that morning as I had been trying to solve a fuel starvation problem and raced it as was for everyday use. Great day out.

Hi, this is great! I've never seen footage from this meeting before, and I just saw myself at 8:14 in the queue (far lane, in full green & white Kawasaki leathers, on a green GPz750). This was the only race I ever did on the 750, and as I lost my camera at the meeting, I have no photos of the event. Thanks for posting this! 👍

Hi. Do you remember if this was the Saturday or the Sunday? Because I was at Long Marston UltStreet in June 1985, but only on the Saturday. Cheers!

Hi, well it was a while ago BUT I'm pretty sure it was the Saturday but could be wrong. I had ridden over from Germany on I think the Wednesday and used the workshop in a local bike shop for a couple of days before riding to the meet.
