@@michaelgormel7223 Hypersonic weapons are a waste of money for now. At 100 million a pop you might as well use the F35 as a stealthy suicide drone. Instead, buy a million of the GPS guided fuzes for 155mm artillery. They are super affordable and effective, turn your "dumb" artillery shells into guided ones for the price of a smartphone.

@@Americaisgreat12 They are 41 million each, which is a lot of money, but not 100m. Straight from congress CRS report: "According to a January 2023 Congressional Budget Office Study (CBO) study, “U.S. Hypersonic Weapons and Alternatives,” purchasing 300 Intermediate-Range Hypersonic Boost-Glide Missiles (Similar to LRHW/IRCPS) was estimated to cost $41 million per missile (in 2023 dollars)."

While the term "hypersonic weapons" is bandied about, what they often mean are MANEUVERABLE hypersonic weapons. The German V-1, of WW II vintage, was hypersonic. Ballistic hypersonic missiles are easy target because they fly a predictable ballistic trajectory. Granted, hitting them may not be easy. Maneuverable hypersonic weapons are hard to target because a maeuvering target is much harder to predict. This dramatically complicates the establishment of a kill chain.

It's worth mentioning that the definition of a Hypersonic missile is different to different countries. Any country that has an ICBM is a country that has a Hypersonic missile. But that's not what we're talking about. It's not really Hypersonic if it slows down to supersonic 60 miles before it hits the target.

Dark Eagle is maneuverable and maintains hypersonic speed through impact. I really have a feeling the hypersonic race is going to be like when the Soviets built the MiG-25, and the US freaked out and built the F-15 in response. Then it turned out the MiG-25 was garbage and the F-15 became the most successful jet fighter of all time.

You beat me to the post. LOL However, having a few extreme range (longer than a F-35 carrying JASSM with one air refueling) HGBs in your toolbox would complicate the enemy's defensive plans. It would also allow for a prompt strike of a time sensitive and very, very high value target, such as an enemy command and control center, transportation hub, or supply depot.

@@bluemarlin8138 it does depend on the circumstances. But I do agree I’d rather throw 50 sub sonic stealthy missiles than 1 hypersonic missile. Last time I checked you wouldn’t send just 1 missile to a high priority target like a aircraft carrier. Hence why the circumstance matters. Good try though.

The US was taking a nap. However Russia and China kept poking it boasting about their hypersonic missiles. It seems like they awoken the eagle. The US has been testing hypersonic long before Russia and China had the technology. Look up the North American X-15. The US is the pioneer of hypersonic vehicles but simply took a nap since it preferred sea skimming missile to avoid radar detection instead of hypersonic ones. North American X-15 is the world record for the highest speed ever recorded by a crewed, powered aircraft, which remains unbroken. This was in 1950s-1960s. I seriously don't get the hype about hypersonic missiles. The US has already made a plane which flies at hypersonic speed more than 50 years ago. Just to name a few more GAM-87 Skybolt(better than Russia's Kinzhal hypersonic missile. It was developed in the late 1950s) Pershing II AIM-54 Phoenix

At 41 million a piece, I would rather see more investment in subsonic cruise missiles be it newer types, upgrading older ones, or just adding to the stockpile as they fly under the radar horizon, sea skim, can actually maneuver, and are cheaper.
@ycplum7062
@ycplum7062 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree that subsonic cruise missiles are much more cost effective, but a few of these LRHW can be extremely useful. For example, a LRHW or two can take out command and control centers well beyond the range of a Tomahawk or F-35 carrying JASSMN, even with one mid-air refueling. I see teh LRHW taking a few extremely high value targets deep in the enemies rear while more conventional targets are taken out with stealthy cruise missiles fired from stealth aircraft. All coordinated, of course. LOL.

personally i wonder if a hypersonic artillery shell/system would work. i mean could the software / propellant / necessary hardware (parts) and such survive being fired lets say, out of a 16 inch gun? we have old battleships with that system and the diameter is large enough to have boosters with it? we could even remake the guns with modern materials potentially making them lighter and more durable... but it would be a sea fired weapon from a new generation of battleships. i do love them so. what can i say, i'm from wisconsin :P anyhow using the gun to fire the projectile into the air and then a solid booster or even potentially a scramjet may work right? just how to lessen the acceleration /shock wave from the initial firing? anyhow ty for the opportunity to share the idea. peace.

Traveling an above Mach 5 is not the only requirement to be considered a hypersonic weapon. Must have the ability to maneuver too. ALL literally ALL ballistic missiles do and have traveled above Mach 5 in their terminal phase. That’s why the Russian Kinzal isn’t a hypersonic but an air launched ballistic missile. It’s also why Patriot always shoots them down. Russia used a real hypersonic in Ukraine and Patriot shot that down as well. Apparantly Russia can’t even get this right lol. Their undefeatable weapon was easily defeated the first time it was used.

Mach 27 is initial speed not average speed, during the glide flight it loses kinetic energy (speed) every second coz compete with air-drag. Russian Avangard is slow weapon at intercontinental distances esp. at terminal phase. it can be intercepted by Patriot SAM if it achieve US GUAM base at Pacific Ocean. US Trident 2 missiles with depressed trajectory faster than any hypersonic weapon can be created. 7 minutes from Norway sea to Moscow and 14 warheads. Hypersonic weapon faster (average speed) than classic ballistic trajectory, but not depressed balistic trajectory.

The US stopped since hypersonic missiles can't hit moving targets at hypersonic speeds as they are moving to fast to course correct on slower targets.
