China and Russia developing hypersonics is interesting because it gives a temporary advantage, but once the US finishes their own missiles and countermeasures, it makes anything that isn't hypersonic obsolete. Considering how expensive they are it is going to leave Russia at a serious disadvantage
@nommchompsky3 жыл бұрын
@Drew That's the temporary advantage I was talking about. The US will make hypersonics and will develop effective countermeasures and then Russia will have to bankrupt themselves making new missiles because anything that isn't hypersonic will be completely useless

@Drew They'll only be useless once the US develops effective counters to hypersonic missiles. Which they will, even if it takes a while. I don't know much about public education in the US, but they have a lot of the world's top universities. People from all over the world go there for education. In fact the US, UK, Australia and Canada have 60 of the worlds top 100 universities. Russia has 1. Regardless, you don't have to be all defensive about Russia, they still have the most nuclear weapons in the world.

In order to do this the missile must reach an escape velocity of more than 6.9 miles per second. This hypersonic speed is several times what a 7.62mm bullet travels leaving the muzzle of a gun. To put it another way, it reaches a speed of approximately Mach 33." The US has had hypersonic missiles since the 70s, and im not talking ballistic. Google aim 54... Flew on the F14s. The US prefers subsonic not even supersonic missiles do to the ability to sea skim, hide below the radar horizon and can maneuver unlike hypersonic missiles. And yes your Russian propaganda has been lying to you, hypersonic missiles can not maneuver in their terminal phase, this is why Russias own patent for scram/ramjet engines admits, and even says the missile needs to turn it's engines off and could self destruct when approaching the target... Let alone plasma blackout Russia tried calling a plasma shield LOL. "Russian patent number 2579409 relates to the field of rocket technology, and more specifically to hypersonic cruise missiles equipped with a hypersonic ramjet engine. The invention describes a method of application and device hypersonic cruise missile (CRPD), allowing to solve the problem of performing a combat mission to destroy ground and surface targets of such a missile. The described invention is designed to maximize the combat potential of the CMP with the scramjet. The design mode for the scramjet are high-altitude cruise conditions while maintaining the estimated cruise speed, and the need to reduce the altitude and flight speed creates difficult technical problems due to the fact that: an engine designed to perform a hypersonic mid-flight at high altitude is not able to continue to work at low-altitude trajectory sections associated with a decrease in the flight number M, hence, the rocket must approach the ground or surface target with an inactive engine; characteristics of sustainability and controllability of CRPD with inactive scramjet significantly deteriorate, loss of stability becomes possible; there is also a danger of destruction of the scramjet design due to the increase in pressure in the flow part of the engine while reducing the CMP from the march height before hitting the target."

CHGB or the Common hypersonic glide body, developed by the Sandia lab, is a so called conical shaped warhead. CHGB will be used by the Navy and the Army. USAF has decided to leave this joint program and develop it's own warhead. The Air Force is developing so called, wedge shaped missile warhead, which is superior to conical shaped warhead being developed for the LRHW. Wedge shaped bodies are more maneuverable than conical warheads, and they can achieve greater speed. I think that was a good move by the USAF since this way all 3 services won't depend on a single project (not putting all your eggs in a single basket comes to mind). CHGB is of course a lower risk program that will, never the less, deliver on a quantum leap performance gain in long range precision strike capability by the Navy and the Army within just a few years. USAF doesn't have the need to bring this capability as urgently as other 2 services so they decided to develop a more advanced warhead.
