Just my tip for guys shooting smoke poles. I keep a skoal can with patches soaked in windex to run between shots. The windex has ammonia and cleans well and dries fast between shots. I'm no pro but works for me.

Just for reference for anyone that’s new to shooting and especially longer ranges. Never ever ever try to sight a rifle in on a super clean bore. Always foul the bore first then work your groupings and loads. Then clean if you want but you will need to foul it again before hunting. Most of my hunting rifles haven’t had the bores touched in here. My comp guns don’t get the bore cleaned until there’s enough fouling for groups to start opening. Then I’ll clean it and re foul before anything.

You have to think about the minimum velocity for expansion to take place on those bullets. At that distance the bullet is going to be moving a lot slower. Find out how fast you're pushing those at the muzzle and the techs over at Hornady will tell you the maximum ethical shot you can make. I made charts for all of my cartridges.

Awesome video. Here in New England it's rare to go out more than 100 yds with the smokepoles, and a lot of folks are leaving the multiround shotguns at home for the precision a rifle delivers. Due to almost complete clearcut of our favorite hunting grounds, we find ourselves looking at deer from 200, 250 yards and leary to try thhose shots with our guns sited in at 100 yds. So, our winter project was to visit a neighboring club with a 300 yd range (100 yds is the max most everywhere here) to "experiment" with going out further. This video is inspiring and answered a lot of questions in that regard. Thankyou!

I have a CVA optima and have had it since they came out and I have made some amazing shots with it and I only use triple 7 powder in pellets and in grain form and with the loose powder I took a volume powder charge measure and weighed the powder and now I use a powder scale and weigh every load the same weight and put it in powder tubes and it makes a world of difference way better accuracy and always stay with the same 209 primers because mixing them up will shoot different and your bullets will hit in different spots by using all kinds of brand's of primers so stay with one type of primers like triple 7. 209 primers or CCI primers or what ever you like the best but primers of different brands of manufacture are hotter and some not as hot and that's got a lot to do with bullet impacts they will mess with your accuracy I found that out just target shooting I had three different brands of primers and my bullets hit in three different areas on the target so I said I better stay with one type of 209 primers. And the same with my sabots and bullets also and powder charge

@danielcurtis143410 ай бұрын
FYI both blackhorn 209 and triple 7 are 70 grains by weight to 100 per volume. So a bit less dense. It seems from observation people limit themselves with blackhorn to 80 grains by weight 110 grains by volume. However triple 7 gets increases up to 150 grains by volume or about 105 grains by weight. So for triple 7 105 grains for blackhorn it’s 80. You can use more without safety issues but you get little if any velocity, more recoil and accuracy suffers.

Its not the dirty barrel causing more bullet drop. Its the breech plug getting fouled and blocking some fire from the primer cap causing slower burn rate. To truly test accuracy you have to clean the breech plug after 1 or 2 shots. Just poke it with your cleaning wire. Also CVA has special breech plugs for the powder vs pellets and they work best. Love the muzzleloader vids Rob.
@MrKokemachine5 жыл бұрын
I notice you have the original breech plug. I have a CVA Wolf too. I was told that you needed a special Black Horn 209 breech plug to run that powder so I purchased one. The powder is awesome. It doesn't look like you had any trouble with ignition with the original plug, though. Great vid.

Folks, the Brits shot on a 1 000 yard range near London, about where the famous tennis tournament stadium, is now. ( the name escapes me at the moment. ) The .50 BP Gibbs rifle was quite a popular rifle, shot from the Creedmore position! The Gentry and Military types used to travel out from London and other towns in their horse carriges to watch the shooting matches. My .44 cal replica "Civil War" Colt is quiet potent at 50m on a steel plate. I have taken small antelope like Reedbuck and Duiker with it, much to the surprise of other hunters. Also took a Black Backed Jackal at about 42m . Load was 40gr FFFG powder and a 125gr lead ball. Family farm in the Orange Free State in South Africa.

That cleaning procedure may very well work with that Blackhorn powder, which I can't find or can justify the price of it even if I could, and some say it is non-corrosive, or at least less corrosive than other black powder replacements, but it sure won't work with Pyrodex or even Tripple 7. I've cleaned very well, with solvents made for the job and in just a few days you can run a patch through the bore and get light rust. Even though I also use Wonder Lube after I get it as clean as possible. Even with many trips through the bore with a phosphor bronze brush you can never really get all of the fouling out of the rifling. What I tell anyone that asks is check that bore about once a month and retreat it as needed. Probably the one biggest cause of the death of a good muzzleloader is less than adequate cleaning. I don't pretend to be the expert in the field, but I've got three of them. All inlines from CVA and none are immune to rust. Nothing breaks my heart more than finding a nice muzzleloader in a pawn shop somewhere with the barrel nearly grown shut with rust and old white fouling. Most if not all of the time the action is junk too and the breach plug is no longer removable. If I can ever find one with a good workable action, I'd like to bore the barrel out on one and make me a small-bore shotgun out of it.

BH is well worth the price to me. WAY less corrosive and doesn't really absorb moisture. Been using it since day one. Can shoot over and over again no problem.

First and foremost great video!! I understand the drop from a dirty barrel as it makes sense. Your first shot at 300 yards was dead nuts on and again, great job. When you shot at 322 yards for the second it was 4.5" low and dropped even more on the third shot as the barrel got dirtier. Shots 2 and 3 were at 322 yards and you can see the drop. I would not conclude that it was about a 7" inch drop for a dirty barrel exclusively from shots 1 & 3. The other factor to consider is the target was moved from 300 yards to 322 yards for shots 2 & 3. Shots 2 & 3 were both shot at the same range and you make a great point. To what degree the 22 yards added to the drop from shot 1 to 2, I would have no idea as it was a clean barrel to a dirty barrel and a dirtier barrel for the third shot. Once again, a great video with good information that I appreciated from you. Thanks!
