Brooklyn Tweed's is even better - it shows how to "lock" the cast-on with a stitch at the end so the stich isn't slipping as you turn it to knit back. It's also useful if you need to stop in the middle of casting on for some reason. You can put on the lock stitch and then walk away, come back and take it off, start casting on again. He also does not use a slip stich at the beginning which makes the hat edge more seamless.

This is such a wonderful tutorial! Thank you! It's so clear, well photographed and easy to follow. The key tip for me that makes this tutorial the easiest for me to get, and that keeps me on track with the overs and unders, is that finger/thumb tap!!!!! Brilliant 😍

Now I get it. Thank you. It really helps (phyically) starting with a slip knot, and I don't think other tutorials do this. However, what is confusing (or has confused me up till now) is that in making the 'purl' stitch, the needle actually goes away from its position between the finger and thumb and first goes OVER the yarn around the index finger, away from the middle & THEN comes back UNDER the yarn and back to the middle. Then, the needle, likewises, goes OVER the yarn around the thumb and away from the middle, before going UNDER the same yarn back to the middle AND UNDER the yarn on the index finger in one movement. Has been confused by the the unders and overs?

Glad to hear that this technique is making more sense now! You're right, it's difficult to describe the motions in words, and I can see how that can lead to confusion. Hopefully the demonstration in the video tutorial is easier to follow though! And we're always here to help answer any specific questions you may have, so just send us an email at customerservice@purlsoho.com if anything comes up!

Very clear and easy to follow! Can you tell me if the two foundation (set-up) rows count as two of the single or double rib rows? They appear to add two rows to the 8 my pattern calls for before switching to garter stitch: I did the 8 and it appears that I have 10 total. Should I have only done 6 after the two foundation rows? Thank you!
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 10 ай бұрын
Hello! I would count the two foundation rows as rows themselves, because they do add height. In the case of your pattern, I think you could go either way! If you're happy with the height of the 10 rows, then you can keep it, but if you'd like a shorter section of ribbing, then you could undo your work for 8 rows.

So easy to understand. Thank you! If I wanted to make a twisted 1x1 rib, would I knit the first row of knits through the front loop instead of the back and then continue in the next rows to knit through the back loop to set up the twisted rib?

Love it! Just have a little question: if you need a doble rib, but start with a 1-1 one, at the moment you increase the stitches, the very cast on will be actually smaller. How do you handle it? Many thanks for the teaching and the answer!!

This is a great method! How could you make this work with an invisible join in the round?
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing in! You could try to graft the two set up rows together once your knitting is complete. Once you finish your set up rows, here's how to set up for woking in the round... Transfer all stitches to the circular needle you will use for the ribbing. With the working yarn needle in your right hand, place a marker on the right needle and join to work in the round, being careful to not twist the stitches. You can view this section of the tutorial by clicking here! Thanks! www.purlsoho.com/create/long-tail-tubular-cast-on-tutorial/

Hmmm what do you mean by 'flat'? Maybe it would help to try a thicker yarn on larger needles to get the hand of it before trying with your project yarn? For the knit 2 purl 2 rib, can you just cast on 2 knits then 2 purls in a row - do you have to do the 1x1 cast on, then change it to 2x2?
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Julia! Great question! Due to the structure of the tubular cast on, it is not possible to cast on 2 knits or 2 purls next to each other. If you give it a try, you will see that they end up looking like 2 stitches coming out the same place. This would not create the lovely edge that the tubular cast creates. While a little more work, it is best to re-organize the stitches after casting them on. Best of luck!

Hi, I'm having complications of doing this cast on, its. too confusing for me, is there another easier way to do this cast on? I tried several videos and I'm still having the same issue. Can you make a video that is not so complicated? thank you
@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with this cast-on method! I'm afraid that this method is indeed very involved and can easily get confusing. I would recommend trying the standard long tail cast-on (www.purlsoho.com/create/long-tail-cast-on/) instead! While this cast-on won't create the same tubular effect, it will absolutely work as a substitute. We'd also be happy to help troubleshoot what's going wrong when you try this cast-on! If you can let us know what issue you've been running into, we can troubleshoot from there. It would also be helpful if you can send a photo of your work to customerservice@purlsoho.com so we can visualize what might be going on!

If casting in an odd number (as in for a sweater) once I turn my work to work the first set up row, would I begin with a slip? If I begin with knitting to the back of the first stitch I notice later that my “knit” stitches are not in the correct position, they are twisted. Please help!
@vanessalumbra9409

yes, they will be twisted. that is why in the first row she tells you to knit thru the back loop. then they are in the right position on the next row.

@PurlSoho
@PurlSoho 5 жыл бұрын
This technique sets up for success with knit/purl combinations ending in a purl bump. To cast on an uneven number of stitches, the technique still works, but be mindful of how your last cast on will appear (presumably a knit stitch!) Thanks for writing in, Vanessa!
@vanessalumbra9409
@vanessalumbra9409 5 жыл бұрын
@@PurlSoho nope. Not working for me. Guess I have to see it done. When you turn the work for the first row with uneven stitches, the knits and purl stitches are just the opposite so the tubular effect is gone.
