So some weeks ago I asked you if I'd be crazy to buy one now. I listened to your advice and bought it. It has not once let me down. The photos are stunning and I take it with me all the time. I'm discreet now, not looking like a pro photographer with huge gear, and I'm getting better photos because of it. People just ignore me. It's wonderful. And the IBIS is awesome. I have not one complaint so far after hundreds of photos. Thank you Emily!

I left Nikon full frame (D610) because I just didn't want to pick it up and go shooting anymore. Shooting events and festivals was an exercise in hand cramps. Enter Panasonic's GX85. I bought the 2 lens kit and added the 42.5mm 1.7 and haven't looked back. The GX85 has stunned both my Nikon-shooting father and my camera club with the image quality. It's great to be able to slip it into a pocket and take it anywhere. I added the 3D-printed grip this spring and would have been happy with the camera into the future if the thumb wheel hadn't died while I was waiting for the grip. I was so impressed with the entire Lumix shooting experience that I upgraded my main camera to a G9 and kept the GX85 as my pocket/compact camera for traveling light.

I did the same. Put my D750 Nikon down and picked this up. I don't miss it. At all. The GX85 just does the job, does it well, has smaller files and takes stunning photos with great colors. I have zero complaints so far.

I have a GX80 for about 2,5 years too and I really love it! It's my everyday camera and I use it also for second camera in weddings and shootings. It's a really wonderful camera to use, truly easy, portable, and full of capabilities! I sold my 12-32mm kit lens and my Panasonic 20mm f/1.7, and now I own 2 of the best lenses in my opinion: The Panasonic 15mm f/1.7 and the Panasonic 42.5mm f/1.7. I can shoot from landscape to street with the 15mm, and I have the 42.5mm for portraits, macro, etc. Just loving my sweet GX80 🔥🔥🔥🔥

The more and more I see videos on the GX85/GX80, it seems like this is THE camera to buy if you wanna dip your toes into photography on a budget, as well as being something to grow with. Cheap lenses, a HUGE lens selection, has the ability to record in 4k, mic input, stabilization, and great for street photography. Currently has a deal for $500 for the body and 2 lenses. Wtf?! I’d be a fool to not buy this thing. It’s currently mid-December of 2023 and I think if I bought this camera right now, it would still be good for me 3-4 years down the road. Also, I LOVE your channel! Very informative and fun to watch! Subscribed :)

Thanks a million for sharing. I’m researching “pick-up and go” cameras so I don’t have to lug around my mid-sized Canon. Then, suddenly a light came on and I remembered a LUMIX ZS model in my file cabinet that I bought new 10-years ago. It’s in premium shape. So, I pulled it out and was amazed at the quality and even video as well as manual mode. I need to upgrade. I recall the exhaustive research I did on that camera 10-yrs ago and convinced my sister to buy one; so I know Panasonic/LUMIX works for me so I’m shopping for a GX85 or comparable without breaking the bank...Lord knows prices are extremely high during this pandemic. God bless and Be well.

Absolutely love the GX80. I got mine in December 2016, and I use it so much I got a second one back in March so I could have a two- lens street photography kit. Both cameras fit into a Cosyspeed holster (which I bought on your recommendation btw, excellent bit of kit)

@@chinenko7741 thx for your answer. I was choosing between those two for photography and got gx80, mostly because of better kit lens, but sometimes I got some regrets about not getting "a bigger sensor". I understand that it doesn't matter to me but that mainstream stuff got into my head :p

@@wwz3320 That's a mistake that ppl like us made with our first MFT camera, for stills i learned you can't shoot at the same conditions like you did with APS-C, you need a little more light or tricks to get more quality because is really a smaller sensor. I don't mind because I'm a Social Media Creator but the difference it's noticeable, at least in stills.

Thank you for another excellent video! Another small but excellent camera in terms of image quality and price is the Canon EOS M-100 with APS-C sensor. Currently goes for around $300 new on eBay with 15-45mm kit lens. And size is about the same as the Lumix GM-5. Excellent touch screen and very easy to use menu system. I know, blasphemy on the Micro Four Nerds channel, but you asked the question at the very end of this video about other small but good cameras.

Love your channel. I bought this about 5 years ago as a backup rangefinder for my Olympus E-M1 and recently when I tried to sell it and nobody was interested, I realized it was best to keep it anyway because of the form factor and extreme portability. My wife loves shooting with it, and having the ability to shoot 4k in such a tiny camera is a massive bonus, particularly when you can upload the Cinelike-D preset. They now sell very decent third-party grips to make it easier to handle with the larger pro lenses and it's wonderful.

This is my second vid of yours I love to death. I own two mirroless cameras. One is the Pentax Q and I loved your tribute to it. The other is the GX85. It is one of my favorite street shooters. Everyone says you "need" a Ricoh GRII or a Leica M9. Nope. This little guy is great with either the panasonic 25mm prime a 7 artisans lens. It is a hella great little workhorse and I love going out and playing with it. If I want something with me all the time...the q is in my jacket. If I want to do street and do not want a bag with me, I grab my GX85. It is a camera I love in my arsenal. Thank you for giving it the respect and love it deserves.

Wonderfully enjoyable as always. Thank you for sharing the beautiful images. Since you asked - aaargh - I'm a Canon guy, just bought the video beast baby grandchild of my FF 6D, the M50. I envy you for the stabilization and video features of the GX80/85, however I believe it's my dharma to produce stuff that's crayoned with Canon colors, kind of suits my subject matter. But gosh, I do love these dinky little cameras. Some of the most fun I've had was with the lowly, forgotten Fuji X-E2, so sweet with the 18-55. Anyhoo, thank you, Emily. I feel part of the family if not a Micro 4/3 insider.

Just back from a brilliant day at the beach with my 3 little m4/3 bears. Papa Bear, G9 with 100-300mm, hibernated in the bag. Momma bear, GX85 with 45-175mm power zoom, came along hanging by neck strap. I dare anyone to walk 2 miles along a beach with a full frame camera and a 90-350mm lens on a neck strap! Ouch!!! Add a rambunctious golden retriever on leash and off running while trying to shoot. The GX85, aka Momma Bear, was fantastic! Great color, quick focus, vivid video! What more could you ask for? Oh, yes. No neck/back strain! As Momma Bear was busy with telephoto, Baby Bear (aka GX850 with 14-42MM power zoom) popped from the pocket to capture the panorama of the beach. What a brilliant combo! And best of all, both cameras worked even with gloves on my hands. No frozen fingers. Try that with a cell phone! Love your reviews and commentary (subscribed).

Thank you for this review. It was costly for my wallet. Was at my local camera store asking setup questions for another camera. Passed the used camera section and there was a GX85 for sale. I’d checked their website last night and it wasn’t listed. This GX85 must have been placed in the case this morning. Great timing! The camera lacked the triangles that attach to the lug. Got the salesman to throw in the replacement for free. The camera came with a battery and charger. There was a thumb rest on the camera! No strap though. $399. $440 with tax. A fair price. Emily if I hadn’t seen this video the GX85 would still be in the used camera case and I’d be $440 richer. Mask On Nurse Marty “Ret”

I've got a Canon 60D, 5D2 & 80D acquired in that order. Two months ago, when the price for a GX85 w/ 12-32mm kit lens & a 45-150mm telephoto went $1 below $500, I decided to get one after watching rave reviews about it, including yours. Not a week later, a brand new Sony RX10ii bridge camera that I'd been eyeing for the longest time became available for less than $800 (these things still go for $1K & above!) and I snatched that as well. Although I love the size and portability of the GX85 as well as the quality of its photos & video, I've been bringing the Sony more due to its having a 24-200mm eq focal range and a constant aperture of f2.8, as well as many other features such as having a built-in ND filter and a leaf shutter that allows for fast shutter speed flash syncing. However, I am so dissatisfied w/ its color rendition in stills w/c I have to shoot in JPEG since the LR version I have on my dinosaur laptop doesn't recognize its RAW (even the Lumix's BTW). Since I don't like changing lenses too much, I'm thinking about getting a travelers combo fr Olympus (M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm F4.0-5.6 II and M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8) that's on sale for $699 on Amazon. I'm thinking about also adding the LUMIX 42.5mm f1.7 lens to these later. What are your thoughts on these? (P.S. Thoroughly enjoy your videos. Pls keep them coming!)

I'm in love with my GX85. Found the perfect lens for me using it as my Twitch camera (7artisans 25mm 1.7, just needed a little more bokeh than the kit lens allowed for my angle) and I'm blown away at how well it does for video. Manual or Auto Focus looks great always and I feel good enough to introduce myself into serious shooting when the time is right as well.

I just bought a used GX85 with 12-32 and 35-100 to go along with my G9 and myriad of lenses I already had. So far I'm loving it. I was holding out for a GX10 (and hoping they would basically update the GX85) but I came across a great deal and had to buy it. I'm super impressed with the video and stabilizer, the AF is bout 90% of the G9's performance in lower light, and the single shot speed and buffer are more than adequate. Sharpness and noise performance aren't far off the 20 MP sensor either. Truly a very nice camera.

Another nice video. I loved my 1st GX85 I got new in 2019 so much that I added a 2nd one that I picked up defective at a pawn shop. After paying for repairs in total it was only a little over $200 usd. My G7 I got used for around $200 also at a pawn shop but I don't take it out much because of the lack of IBIS but it is still a great camera. I basically shifted the G7 work over to a new G95 I got a couple of years back. I look forward to adding a GX8 to my stable but just can't justify the cost yet.

I got a GX80, inspired by your review of it here, a while ago (and I used your link, so you would have got a cut 👍). It was a stunning deal at the price, and I love it. I have a range of cameras, including FF and APS-C, but the GX80 gets used around 75% of the time. I've got a handful of Lumix lenses for general use, Zuiko 50/3.5 for macro, and other manual lenses for random fun. I've even been out shooting with Zuiko 200mm and 300mm lenses, and the stabilisation is so good I can get away with "leaning on a wall" shots for effectively 400mm and 600mm (which is handy for safe portraits in these social distancing days 🙂). It's not my littlest camera though - I got an even littler GX800 too, for a super tiny backup body. (Oh, I should add that a friend also fell in love with the GX80 after seeing mine, and got one too)

Yes, yes, yes! GX80, fab camera. I have had mine for nearly three years. It is my main camera (I am not a pro). I love it. I often use it with the Olympus 60mm f2.8 lens. Handheld macro is possible! Actually I was surprised Panasonic didn't add IBIS to their new G100 because the GX80 is small has great IBIS. I also like using the Panasonic 12-32 lens, the 35-100 f4-5.6 is a gem too, it is so small but matches this camera well.

I got my GX7MKII in Japan last year in October. I found it in the best place for budget-constrained camera buyers: Map Camera. I have three lenses, the kit lens ( a pancake zoom 14-42 mm Vario G X), a 45-150 mm zoom, and my crown jewel: the marvelous Vario 25 mmm F1.7 prime lens. I agree 100%, the GTX80/85/GX7MKII will become a classic.

To get into photography, I'd highly recommend the Fuji XT20, with a prime lens (such as 35 f/2), the 18-55 kit and manual glass. It's incredible. GX85 was my first MFT cam, and still is one of the best out there :)

So many people are hybrid shooters now that lack of IBIS is a deal breaker. Fuji looks awesome for pictures only or stationary video, though.

I bought the GX80 when it came out. I had the GH3 at this time and desperately wanted the stabilization for video. The GH5 was rumored and the GX80 seemed to be this great "always in the bag" camera plus a good B-cam for a possible GH5. A year later everything had turned out perfectly for me. Both cameras are still doing what I want. The GX80 lives most of the time together with the 14mm/2.5 or the 20mm/1.7. I love it when a plan comes together.

I’ve had the GX85 since it came out in 2016. I’ve loved it, hated it, sold it, and bought it back. It is a wonderful camera for many reasons, and it’s even changed the way I shoot, and not in a bad way. The biggest drawbacks are the poor EVF and limited dynamic range. But at least it’s got an EVF and, much like the days of slide film, you learn to avoid situations with excessive contrast. The in-camera jpegs are awful, but I’ve developed a RAW workflow that gets me great GX85 images very quickly. I still use it a lot, and can’t bring myself to sell it, even though I mainly shoot Fuji now (X-H1, X-T4).

Shosanna Dreyfus sure. Matti Sulanto over at Sulanto blog has a great free LR preset/profile that makes most GX85 images look very nice. The micro four nerd herself also has some nice looking presets/profiles on her site. The “Everything” one looks pretty cool but I haven’t bought it yet. Adobe changed their RAW processing engine in 2018 so all the newer versions of Lightroom and Photoshop work great with the GX85. Not so much can be said for older versions of LR. Since I live in the country I automatically apply the “Adobe Landscape” profile and it usually looks really nice for the country scenes I often shoot. I’d avoid the “camera matching” profiles because, well, they look like the in-camera jpegs. If I’m doing a portrait I’ll typically use a Mastin Labs preset: Fujicolour original for the pastel “light and airy” look, or more likely for me, Kodak original for some bolder, rich colours. Both of these have great skin tones with Panasonic files. The Ilford pack looks great for B&W work, but the B&W profiles and presets found in LR for free also look very good. Actually - the Monochrome and L. Monochrome are decent under “camera matching.” After all of that, here’s the short answer: apply the Adobe Landscape profile in Lightroom’s Basic Module, or a B&W profile. If you don’t like it or are not that familiar with photo editing, hit the LR “Auto” button also found in the Basic module. You might be surprised at the results. Try supporting Emily the MF Nerd with her presets/profiles! They’ll save you a ton versus Mastin labs, and they no doubt will work very well with Panasonic RAW files. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

I've got one of these to get back into photography. I loved my full frame Canon 6D, but it was too big, bulky, and heavy. Yes it makes amazing photos, but what's the point of that if I don't want to carry it all day? So enter the GX80! So small and light, but still has great quality. I'm adjusting a bit to using a smaller sensor, but the compact-ness of it means I actually take a camera out more.

I have a GX80 as my "main" digital camera, and still have it's predecessor, the GX7. Apart from these two, I also have a gaggle of old GX1's rescued from FleaBay, which I treat like cheap GoPros that takes the same lenses as my GX80. If you want to have a bargain, get yourself an old GX1 for £60 or so. It takes 1080p video, and has passable sound, good enough to sync with sound from my Zoom H1. I love using all my Panny iron with my adapted M42 lenses for manual bokeh-fun. I also use all these M42 lenses on a "native" platform, my Praktica MTL5 SLR, so it's all swirl and bubbles! :-) My current favourite combo: My GX80 and Helios-44 lens, adapted with a Pixco speed-booster. This combination simply sucks in light like a singularity, meaning you can take pictures when it's almost too dark to see. Simply awesome! :-) The GX80 is surprising me every time I use it.

I feel the same way about my GX80, which I bought secondhand about 18 months ago. It's a capable and sorted camera with good controls, excellent stabilisation, good AF, and generally good image quality. I've used it as a second camera for weddings with the M.Zuiko 45/1.8 on it. I try to use it at ISO 200 wherever possible and wish it was better at high ISO. To me it and the GX9, perhaps along with the Olympus E-M10 series are the stand-out good buys of the m4/3 bodies.

Lovely and humorous video as always :-) A go to camera that other (beginner) photographers could consider is the Olympus OM-D E-M10 MKIII (or MKII) which does most things just as good as the GX-85 and some maybe even a little bit better. For instance 121 af focus point versus 49 on the GX-85. To me especially ergonomics are better on the E-M10. Better grip and better controls. Also nice features like live time composite. For those who like video it does 4K video too.

Great images and video. Love my GX9 & just bought the GX80 as a backup. V favourable 1st impression but I do wish the GX80 had a min shutter speed menu option which is so useful when shooting in AP mode. I would highly recommend the HG-GX9 hand grip when shooting with these cameras which transforms their handling making them well balanced even for lenses like the PL 8-18 f2.8-4 let alone the tiny PL15mm.

I am very fond of picking up my Pentax *istDS for a casual walk around the block with my offspring. Sure, it's only 6MP and it doesn't do video AT ALL, but I'm not a video person myself and 6MP is more than adequate for family happy-snaps or when the light is good. Plus, the camera is small for a DSLR, light, and easy to handle, and Pentax Limited primes are very compact. The CCD sensor does interesting things with rich colours, especially with much older (e.g. Pentax Takumar M42) lenses, and there are times I've taken a tripod with me just so I can nip into the woods near my house and give it the long exposures it needs in there.

very good video - really nice pics - I have had my GX85 for 2 years and yes very nice little camera - I was always confused as far as the GX8 which I also have and the GX7 which I also have - which was the GX7 upgrade - The GX85 was ahead of the game when it came out as far as features and size - I think I would like to see an update soon - what I would like to see is a larger magnification in the EVF and higher res as well as better LCD - I think it might be a bit taller but keep the same width - new sensor which better iso performance and and yes the big one Phase Detect AF. PDAF - no more DFD only - Panasonic are going the way of Olympus if they do not stop sticking with their DFD only - even my iPhone tracks better then all of my Panasonics - yes Single AF is great - but that Tracking DFD AF is rubbish - endless pulsing - which is the nature of Contrast based system - I have largely switched to Sony A73's - which have super eye auto focus and even pet as well as great Tracking AFC - as well as Fuji XT1/2/3's many features of Panasonic that I miss - and of course the SH1 is just way way to heavy and large so no go Now with Olympus gone it will be hard to see what happens to M43 - Panasonics new Vlogging camera is a flop as it does not have good tracking AF - and no IBIS and lack of affordable wide angle lenses and heavy crop - Now with Canon and Sony coming out with new cameras as well - I think Panasonic is really struggling in even their FF L mount and it seems clear that Panasonic will never implement anything but their DFD which can't compete - that they will just go down hill sadly - along with Pentax - note how long also it has been since Panasonic updated any of their 1 inch bodies - to me it is clear that they are struggling and winding down with only FF L mount continuing - but with to large and heavy and expensive bodies and only DFD and Canon and Sony and Nikon and Fuji always improving their tracking AF. Panasonic will wind down and bow out in the next year or two
