If you like the ear protection in the video you can get it here: amzn.to/3uPpbYn
You are probably watching this because either you are curious about one of the most expensive lawn mowers you can buy, or you are seriously considering it because you want a mower with 0 turn capabilities, but with a cab and AWD. Very few mowers meet the latter, and that is how I ended up with the JD 1585.
I have owned the John Deere 1585 for 5 years now. I have posted many videos of it brooming and snow blowing, but haven't shown it mowing or gone into great detail on the machine itself.
I received some requests to give a thorough review of the machine and post a video, so here it is.
Let me start by saying I really like this machine and I will always have a front mount mower going forward. They are just so versatile and meet all of my needs. They are great mowers, and they are easier to use and more effective at plowing residential driveways and sidewalks than my skid steer.
The 1500 series is at the top end of the mowers John Deere. The 1585 I have has almost all the options you can get and cost over $30k new, just for the machine itself. The mower deck was $3,700, the snow thrower was $3,156, and the broom was about $3,700. Needless to say, this is one expensive lawn mower so if you get one, you will probably have pretty high expectations.
In this video I go through the machine in detail and point out all the things I like and don't like about it.
The main cons are:
-Dust infiltrates the cabin easily
-The front of the mower and engine area trap grass clippings and are hard to clean
-The cabin is very noisy, you need to wear hearing protection
-Attachments, in particular the mower deck, are really hard to switch
-Price
The main pros are:
-Reliability
-Power
-AWD
-Mowing with a cab is amazing, if you like to stay cool and don't like bugs
-The front mount design allows for zero turning, brush mowing, mowing over edges, and accommodates many different attachments
-This is an awesome winter machine for snow removal (see my other videos)
Main Conclusion:
I would buy one again, but I would definitely check out other manufacturers to see if they do the cons better. Also, I would get a side discharge mower deck to go with it.
Enjoy the video and please comment if you have any advice or questions!

I have one of these and the side discharge stays way cleaner, your cab will stay cleaner as well. One trick to keep the cab clean is to add some weather strip foam underneath the seat. Also keep your Hvac air moving to keep the cab pressurized

I worked for a local school district for 35 years. The last mower I used for a few years was a John Deere F1145 front mower. 28 hp 72 inch cut. It was equipped with a mulch kit. You could mow in the rain, it had a hard cab with easy off doors and a removable rear window. Even in the rain it looked like you mowed on a sunny day. in the fall leaves were a breeze simply mow and the leaves disappeared. In the winter we installed snowplows on them and they were plow beasts.. Turf tires no chains. We used them to do sidewalks and with rear steer they were wonderful.

I work for a municipality and we use these machines for all seasons(we have 8 of them)we beat the crap out of them, mostly during winter plowing downtown, single digit temps, and the heater works well enough to wear shorts. It will use maybe a 1/4 of tank in an 8 hour shift of pushing snow. We use them for our leaf collection program and build 4x8 aluminum backed blade, the program is dustier than bailing hay. We add filter fabric over the radiators but we also blow the units out after every use. I have outworked contractors using skidsters in snow with this machine. Great machine!

It’s easier to clean underneath with a compressed air wand then pressure wash after. The oil dipstick is actually under the seat. That one under the floor is hydraulic fluid. The cab is optional that’s why there’s two light switches. We have been using these for years in the winter, spring, summer and fall. They take a beating and just keep going!!!

We use the same model at my place of work. I think John deere may have changed a few things. The deck is slightly different and doesn't get caked in grass. The cab is sealed, so after 870 hours I've never seen it get that dirty. One of the doors has a compressor unit, so it will stay open without you having to hold it. Other than that, I'd say the rest is pretty standard to yours. Grass builds up under neath the floor panel of the cab, but hasn't caused any issues so far. Also with your rear radiator panels, I'd recommend cleaning that out with an air compressor, not a hose. For the way it operates, we use it in extremely awkward circumstances. So far I'd say it lives up to its name, although I'd prefer using the ransom mowers. These ride ons always feel top heavy when cutting anywhere near banks.

Thank you for the in-depth lengthy review. There's not a lot online about the mowers so your review is especially helpful. They are great machines but could be so much better with some improvements. I had a 1575 which I sold and bought the 1585 six years ago. The earlier machine was bullet proof and took over from tractor with slasher until paddocks started to look like a park. I learned to live with the quirks of the 1585 and sealed the cab with adhesive foam sheets. The side discharge had nil effects on grass build up and I always used a cordless blower to clean the machine, especially the radiator. Only took a few minutes. So far had two sets of engine mounts fail, the second time after four years was covered by a warranty recall. The dealer replaced these with tractor mounts and was doing the same with the local council machines. Cruise control is great but has failed and four wheel drive transmission howls so much I only use two wheel drive. Talking with the dealer the cost of repairs was about half the changeover price for a new machine. I had ordered another 1585 and they will fix all faults in the old machine before reselling. There is such a demand for them they'll have it sold very quickly. The trade in was $36k not far off original price six years ago. It had 189 hours and used really twice a years to mow 30 acres. The 1585 price has increased considerably here as the dollar has fallen so much in relation to the euro as our machines come from Germany. With work lights, mirrors, radio, beacon light and cruise a new machine is $54k. I have a different brand machine at another property but the 1585 is comfortable to use and my daughter loves helping to mow when she comes over.

I have had a chance to use the newer version of the 1585 (released in Australia in April 2022) and many of the issues noted by other reviewers have been partly addressed. There is new heat shielding mats under and at the back of the seat as well as the previous shield you can see when the back cover is opened. I have added a few additional heat shields under the mower and on the lift-up panel used to access grease and check fluid levels. I also removed the cover behind the seat and inserted foam. The cover has additional thin sound proofing as standard so foam fill was probably not required. Foot controls are still open and need rubber wraps to prevent grass/dust entering. Compared to my previous 6 year old 1585, there is now little dust etc entering the cabin after an hour's mowing. A quick vacuum or use of a blower is still required after a full day's work just to tidy up the cabin but really you could leave it for a clean after a week or more mowing. The air filter is a cow to clean and open, as are some other filters (fuel and even oil). As noted in the excellent review the screens covering the radiator are stiil a pain and require cleaning after every use. Some additional rubber has been used around the metal cover seals which does help a little. Overall the recent model is much, much quieter and a pleasure to use. I now can have the inbuilt radio on low and listen to music and sports whereas this was just impossible with the older machine. I'm not sure about the added Diesel Particulate Filter on the 2022 model. So far it seems to burn off OK. The air conditioner seems to be stronger and sometimes I have to turn it off as it is quite cold. That's where a rear opening window, such as on the series 6and series 4 tractors I have, should really be incorporated as standard. It would make such a difference to cabin comfort. The new mini screen above the steering wheel has four functions with hour meter, service, tachometer and alarms. I generally leave it on one function to check on engine revs. John Deere still has some way to go before it can be regarded as the ultimate mowing machine and hopefully by the time I purchase my fourth machine some more improvements will be addressed. If you are thinking about purchasing a 1565 or 1585 you will not be disappointed.

This is a great video ! Very informative. I have been using my new 1585 since early May, for mowing. Now going into snow removal. I also have a love-hate relationship with it. Maintenance is very difficult, compared to the 1445. So, far I agree with everything the "narrator" has said. I have learned some very helpful things from you, also. Like, how to clean out the radiator a lot better. And access to the air filter and battery. I had no idea. I have not seen those things in the book. Thank you so much, for this video !!

We have a John Deere 1585 with the side discharge. The side discharge keeps the mower and the inside of the cab much cleaner. We also tinted the windows with ceramic tint. This made a huge temp. difference inside the cab. The air intake absolutely stinks. Whatever you do don't wash it and take it straight to work. Wash it and let it idle until dry.

Gadday from Australia. Good video of this machine. We run a fleet of these 1585's all with 72" decks. We have had exactly the same experiences that you have had with these machines. The difference is that we run mostly side discharge. The original side discharge flap we threw out and replaced with a 1/2" heavy duty rubber with a custom frame to cope with heavy knocks. We do have rear discharge decks when mowing roadsides to reduce stone throws on to passing traffic. We found the rear discharge decks do not perform well in heavy grasses ie. >5". We found that the rear discharge couldn't discharge fast enough and the grass would ball up underneath and then discharge in a cloud of dust and grass. We have not tried using mulching blades on this model though we use mulching blades on Z turn rear discharge mowers. You could try if you have not already using mulching blades rather than side discharge blades. We use a Trimax flail attachment for extra heavy grassed areas that also have small saplings. The dust issue in the cab we have reduced by placing insertion rubber around all the floor penetrations.Still a bit dusty, just not as bad. We also use the same type of hearing protection. The radiators are still an issue for us. We have mounted tool boxes behind the cab which swing away when we tilt the bonnet. In the tool box we carry amoungst other things, a battery operated blower of quality that gets us out of trouble when that little light comes on. However, we have recommended to John Deere to look at a blower fan to blow a large portion of grass away from the rear grill area. Some skid steers have these. Where we are in Australia the temperature can get to above 100 F. The air conditioner in this cab does not cope well with high temps. Given where it is built, it's more about keeping you warm than cool I guess. With no windows for fresh air in these temps the cab becomes a bit hot. As you have pointed out, the machine has good qualities such as power, cut quality and access. We have also used Kubota out fronts. They have a wider foot print and were better in steeper drains. No cab.Would like to see a posi-tracked version of this machine as we also deal with some steep country. All the best.

@@driftlessinwi Toro Ground Master Series has the reverse blowers on their radiators. Not had anything to do with them except where they are used on our local sports grounds. They all have rear discharge decks. Should mention that all areas where there is a chance of pedestrian interaction, we use the either the rear discharge or side discharge with blower catcher. Problem with catcher is turn around time and support vehicle access for grass disposal in areas > 10 acres. Grass height dependant. We have no problems in mowing grass airfields and surrounds with the 1585 at maximum speed. Slashers will do the job faster but don't give the same finished cut. Be nice to have a machine and attachment for every job.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did try using my leaf blower a couple of times after getting that recommendation from YT, but I find it actually makes more of a mess and doesn't work as well. For example, when you try to blow the leaf blower through the floor (like I did with garden hose in video) it blows grass and dust everywhere into the cab. When blowing from the front underneath, things just seem to stay stuck or get blown into even deeper crevices. I am still looking for a side discharge 72" mower deck :)

I agree with others. I'm stunned it has the shortcomings it does for how much it costs. However, what if you were to remove the black rubber and screw it go the mower deck instead. Then it would possibly keep the grass from the rear discharge on the ground and make the air flow under the tractor instead of all over. As for the battery location, you can buy remote posts for pretty cheap that will let you mount battery posts ANYwhere you want to.

@@driftlessinwi yeah a pigtail would definitely be easier for a trickle charger. I was just thinking terminals in case you had to jump other equipment. However, to be honest the best way to jump anything is to just buy a NoCo jump pack. I bought a 2,000 amp one and it's amazing! Not only can it jump up to a 6.0L Diesel or 8.0L gas engine but it can jump them from dead. It has the normal auto detect like some units but also has an over ride button that turns the pack on for jumping completely dead batteries it can't sense. They make ones so big they can jump up to a 45 liter 16 cyl engine. I bought it because I have one of their trickle chargers on my one car. That is one REALLY cool tractor though man. Would DEFINITELY be over kill for my 0 6 acre lot 🤣

Lastly, the rear discharge never clogs up, not once in 5 years of mowing with it in all kinds of grass.

He missed several pathetic items. Mine has cruise control which is a rocker switch which is hidden directly in front of the steering wheel and the only way to shut it off is to hopefully find the rocker switch while bouncing around. If you miss the switch you wreck! Also there are no gages for the operator to see unless you stop the machine, pull out a flashlight and push a bunch of stupid buttons to try to see oil pressure, coolant temperature, etc. The rear screens on the rear will load up with cotton or other miscellaneous debris about every 30 minutes with no warning that the motor could be overheating. The front castor wheels are loaded with nasty grease which “will” get on you and/or your clothes. The forward/reverse foot pedals are about 2” square with about .5” in between the two pedals so it’s pretty easy to hit both pedals at the same time. I had to put lugged tires, liquid filled with 70 pound cast iron weights on each wheel to enable the mower to perform on a sloped terrain. I totally removed the plastic shield under the mower which allowed me to use compressed air to clean the unit. Normally I get about a bushel basket of clippings each cleaning that I have to deal with. Last thing is if it’s above 95 the AC isn’t adequate. That’s where sound and thermal insulation would help. All of these items should have come as standard equipment on a $45,000.00 lawn mower. P.S., I ran over a castor wheel also. 2 bolts and PVC plastic grease covers took care of that problem. Other than that, I have no complaints.👎🏿👎🏿🤮

It's a 2014, it turns better in 2 wheel, unless you go up a hill. I just do y turns when I mow and keep 4wd on all the time because I have slopes and hills. After I recieved feedback on the video that I shouldn't use full time 4wd, I tried with the auto 4wd again to retest and I found I kept spinning the tires when going up a hill. If one has a mostly flat yard to mow, 2wd or auto 4wd probably work better. Thanks for the question!

if you still want a side discharge deck one thing that I highly recommend is that you use it at full throttle because if you don't unfortunately you won't get as good of a cut because the blades are going a little slow if you go fulll throttle you will get a great cut and it will allow you to mow a little faster if you use full throttle.

I worked fine for honey suckle and buckthorn, but became a liability for all the glass in the 1585. So, I just got a shear for my skidsteer.

That's my dream machine!! I have a 1025r and I love it! But I'm jealous of anything with a cab! That is what I'd love! Snow removal video was great too!! Awesome machine! What's that 37hp?

Its a nice machine! I especially love it for winter work. 37.4 hp. Still going strong, I just put on foam filled ag tires for the front drive wheels, I will see how those do in the snow...but more importantly no more flats! Thanks for the comment!

the grass building up is a deal breaker for me , the air conditioner is nice though . the kubota only has heat , ...... in a lawn mower ! that makes no sense at all for a machine that predominantly works in the summer months .

With the collection system, and the mounts for the collection system, you could theoretically turn this into a micro combine if you have the proper engineering knowledge. The only reason why you have to have that knowledge though, is just because nobody makes implements for these things besides a select few companies interested only in lawn care

Another comment I will add is I made a 30” long 1/4” pipe air nozzle with an orifice on the end that I use to an air compressor to clean with. I NEVER use water on any tractor or mower. That’s what kills the deck bearings. Having no temperature or oil gage is the one that tops them all🤮🤮. There is no way to know if your engine is running at 190 or 260. The only thing you know is whenever and whatever the factory setting is, a warning light a little smaller than a pin head will light up and a “STOP” signal is supposed to come on the display which is located behind your right hand elbow. The display is nearly impossible to read or see unless you stop the machine and spin around to try to see the display. Problem with that is your $48,000.00 mower just blew the motor. The code number will tell you after the fact that you lost oil pressure or your coolant. I’m guessing that first year engineers designed this whole machine.😪😪🤮🤮

can afford a green machine you could afford a spray nozzle but i think it would be better to air blow all that grass off , leaf blower works good
@driftlessinwi
@driftlessinwi 2 жыл бұрын
I have tried air and even a leaf blower, I don't like how the chaff blows all over the place when doing that. Using water keeps the dust down. But to each their own, right? :) Thanks for the comment!
@jeffreyyoung5634
@jeffreyyoung5634 2 жыл бұрын
You are sitting above the hydraulics, the engine is behind you. Anyone watching this needs to know this is a commercial mower not really a homeowners model. The cab is basically an aftermarket add on. If you want to clean it a little easier blow it off with a blower or an air hose first. When you just hose it off the grass and dirt all sticks.
@driftlessinwi
@driftlessinwi 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't had luck using compressed air, or a leaf blower. I find it just makes a bigger mess in the cab and I breath in more dust that way. I know water isn't ideal, but it seems to be the only thing that works when you have wet grass (its humid in the midwest) crammed in under the machine. Thanks for the comment!

He is evidently unaware that tree is a “float” position on the deck hydraulic system. All the deck weight should be riding on the two drive wheels and the two castor wheels all the time.

The Kubota back discharge is horse shit, just as the JD one you are witnessing. Traded ours in within two weeks. When you mow grass eight hours a day and you gotta blow it out 3-4 times a day. It sucksZ by a side discharge

Hahaha I drive a lot 1585. If you drive in 4WD allt time, it will do mutch bad turn radius. You brake left in 4WD, you ar not working witch the machine. 4WD only in slops, moddy conditions. Automatically 4WD is always the best turn radius.

you have a lot of uninformed information in this video (biggest one being engine air filter is on top of engine, not behind side panels). for starters, you are not sitting on top of the engine. that hatch under your feet lifts open to the hydrostatic pump/drive. and as far as cleanup, spraying dry grass debris should never be your first attempt. get yourself a battery power blower to clean it out quickly after each mow; don't let it build up after several uses. also, keep in mind, this is a finish mower. not a rough terrain mower where you're cutting foot tall grass. that is where you're large tractor/mower implements should be used. proper application for intended use of the machine would help you tremendously.
@driftlessinwi
@driftlessinwi 8 ай бұрын
The air filter is under seat, where all the grass clippings pile up, the side panel does have a screen that still needs to be cleaned. The seat is above engine. The blower doesn't work, I've tried it for years. The machine gets just as dirty cutting the yard as cutting trails. I've used it for over about 12 years now so I would say I'm pretty informed...here is a real tip, get a side discharge and problems go away, I just got one, hurray!

You could blow the trash out from under the cab
@driftlessinwi
@driftlessinwi 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did try this. I think it is the way to go if the grass isn't too wet...however it still doesn't get everything under the cab. You still have to reach your hand in and pull out clumps that get stuck in the multitude of hiding places. Thanks for the comment!
