I freeze all my Rice, Pasta, flour and Pancake mix for 3-4 days to kill any bugs or eggs in the food. Remove them and let it get to room temperature, then add them to Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. Been doing this for years with out any problems. I’ve open stuff up that’s been store away for more then 7 years and they were perfect. You would never knew that they were 7 year old food.

Isn't freezing adding humidity and mold to your food ?...Unless its instant freeze techniques, be careful for bacteria
@iiinsaiii
@iiinsaiii 8 ай бұрын
@@BA-so3mx nope it doesn’t. Unless you are adding something in the freezer that is wet. But as long as the stuff is fully dry, it will be just fine when removed. I’ve done this for years with out any issues. Once the 3-4 days is done, you take the packaging out of the freezer and set it somewhere to get to room temperature. Then you can put them in Mylar bags with Oxygen absorbers or vacuum bag them.

@namehere4954

I never store flour as it's dead and contains hardly any nutrients. As soon as you mill a grain, within 1 day 40% nutrient loss, by day 3 90% nutrient loss. Whole grains also store much loger. Store grains whole, make flour fresh. Also, if you're using oxygen absorbers, you will kill any bugs or eggs as they need oxygen to survive. Freezing isn't necessary and yes, can increase moisture content.

Wheat is the Rice of the North and I'm blessed here in that the Grain Elevator will sell to anyone with the cash. Whole Wheat is down from last year and down from last January, Last year, $400 a ton, last January, $355 a ton, right now, $340 a ton, I getting another half ton. Whole Oats are $305 a ton and I want 500lb of those things too. But that's not saying I don't get Rice and lots of it. We have a wholesaler here who sells to the general public and I can get 20kg, (44lb) bags of Long Grain White Rice for $43.64. So be it. I got two bags already and only want three more. That's not too much to ask is it? They'll sell me a gallon of Soy Sauce for $17.85 to go with all that rice too. I'll pick a couple more of those things too. I decant the Soy Sauce into glass bottles with a good metal lid with a plastic liner. They don't leak. I want to fill a 35 gallon heavy duty Food Grade plastic barrel that has the tight screw on lid with all that Rice leaving room for a few lbs of Bouillon, a large bag of Mild Curry Powder, ... and a couple of one gallon Mylar bags of dehydrated veggie melody. What's Rice without some veggies? Oh yeah, this is a back-up stash away from my back-up stash that's away from the main stash. I like redundancy in my preps. Good luck.

Oat groats or rolled oats only last about 3 years. They're not a hard grain like wheatberries and will degrade much more quickly.

What happens if and when you need to get rice from one of the buckets? Meaning, do you get what you need and then reseal the mylar, or do you need to use the entire contents?

All food has bug eggs in it. The oxygen absorbers sucks the oxygen out of the closed bucket of rice and kills them.

For sure. Rice's advantage is it's cheap and easy to store. We store other stuff too. Beans, canned meat, etc. We also try to grow as much food as we can, and we get protein from eggs as well as sourcing meat from local farmers.

The mylar keeps the air out and hides the scent from rodents. The bucket is there to protect the mylar and add a secondary seal as a back up.

Question: Why didn't you vacuum seal. I'm new to this
@strategicprepper2648
@strategicprepper2648 8 ай бұрын
Sr here. Vacuum seal is good but O2 absorbers are at least as effective and cheaper IMO. I withdraw as much air as I can from the Mylar and the O2 absorbers do the rest. We both have had great success this way storing things over many years. (Except pancake mix. lol. When exposed to heat I have had a couple of containers expand and burst, breaking out of the pails)

@@islawmartin7771 I store mine in a room but with heavy window covering to keep out sunlight. Sunlight is the enemy to long term storage. And I keep the temps around 55 in winter but closer to 65-70 in summer (I wish I could get it down to 55 in summer). But this works well for all my food storage: buckets, jars, potatoes, etc
