Small or thin pastas require considerably less time to cook. For instance: Orzo, angel hair, very small macaroni. Angle hair cooks in 4 minutes vs. spaghetti which takes 9 minutes. That could stretch out fuel quite a bit.

You can also save fuel by soaking your Spaghetti or Angel hair Pasta for 2 hours in room temperature Water, then you just add it to your heated up Sauce, & cook it for a further 2 minutes. 👍🍝🤗

I got snowed in at 8,000 feet in the family cabin in 2015. Was stuck for a week and a half and exhausted my food in two and a half days. I had no idea how long the storm would last or how bad it would be. I ended up eating 25 - 30 year old food including a can of Van Camps beans from 1991. That food kept me going. One thing about the old noodles, mine were stored in sealed glass jars as well, and they tasted like cardboard, still edible but a bit like getting nutrition from eating your shoe. Flavored oatmeal packets were the clear winner - maple and brown sugar stored in waxed paper. Most everything I ate was expired two decades before but I didn't get sick, just a little anecdote for a case-study.

@@skr8674 That's a sad story, but I'll tell it. My parents got divorced when I was 6. I re-united with Dad and his side of the family when I turned 18, and the cabin had been neglected since I was young. Dad used to take us up there in the snow for vacations when we were kids but lost custody. In my twenties I was hired by my Grandparents to renovate the place and that's when the storm came.

I got snowed into my cabin for 2 weeks ... didn't prepare and got very very hungry. Survived on tomato paste, crackers and old pasta. I've been on a kick lately to build up a long term food storage ... and I mean LONG TERM because I'm too scattered to constantly rotate out. Thank you for the oatmeal packet idea!

@@Mamour2024 in general, "they" suggest you throw away your old spices every six months - a year, but that's ridiculous. Most spice racks that come with spices in them are far older than that already when you get them home. Not only that, but even old herbs and spices will still add something to plain food and increase the eating experience, reducing food fatigue and allowing for a variety of flavors.

I've been a personal trainer and health and wellness couch for 25 years and I could still eat pasta with peas and butter everyday. 😆 I don't, but I could.

Pasta and broccoli is good too. I usually make w twisties twisties, butter, and Parmigiano. I love pasta wheat, too. A cold pasta salad with choice of veg, oil and vinegar is good.

Bay leaves at bottom and top of jar work if you don't have oxygen absorbers. You can vaccum seal it shut if you want but not necessary for pasta

Most Dollar Stores have beans, pasta, cereals, canned fruit, canned veges, and canned meats. Even Top Ramen. Check those out. It's a great place to get started at and spend very little. We started at the beginning of covid, so we have a decent amount that we rotate when needed.

save jars,all sizes. olives, spaghetti sauce,etc. thoroughly wash and dry. You'll think you have too many,but watch how quick you fill them up.(yeast, beans,cornmeal, jelly beans. etc)

Jars have really gotten expensive. If someone new is watching this....you can use pasta sauce jars, pickle jars or any kind of jar that has a good metal lid. Just pop in that oxygen absorber and it will seal just like any other mason jar.

I watched your videos on dry canning. I've gone crazy for a year putting up pastas, rice,flour, popcorn, flour,sugars, salt and much more. I couldn't put a garden in so I've put up alot of dry goods. My king size bed underneath is full now every space I can has dry storage. Thank you Rudy.

Put your jars and lids in hot soapy water, rinse in hot water. Let dry. Make sure jars are totally dry- no moisture. Fill and seal with lid saver or oxygen absorbers. Done.

Simple dressed up pasta , Mayo, onions, celery, caned tuna or chicken. Only cooking needed is pasta. If using dehydrated onions/celery add them to the pasta while cooking. Of course season to taste! Love a good Italian pasta 🥰

I got 250 Mason charge from a elderly lady the wanna downsize her house awesome. Also a neighbor in our neighborhood offered me to have all of her jars which came to a 150 plus her pressure cooker and all the tools for it awesome great job.

Yes I am and also the lady in my neighborhood that gave me all . She got told me I should go to the senior center in the town I live or all the different senior centers in The Valley which I live. Put up some kind of a flyer where you come pick up the jars and what are they have and most of them will probably give it to you.

Im not going to lie when storing dry goods in a jar with oxygen absorbers ive never had a problem useing recycled (and washed) spaghetti sauce jar and not one ( yet) has lost its vaccume. Some are well over 10 years old.

@@susanloy8846 l don't can/bottle any cooked foods like meats, veg etc, but l use them for nuts, seeds, herbs, dried fruit etc, basically just everyday pantry use. I take out any lining on the lids and boil them. I wouldn't be worried about storing dry things in reused jars with reused undamaged lids.

I would store fettuccini before macaroni. Macaroni holds too much air taking up more space because of it's shape. Fettuccini's shape would also allow you to use Mylar bags, which are much cheaper than jars, and hold a lot more food. Take the savings and buy more food. Reserve your jars for canning high dollar stuff like meat.

If someone has space but not much money, elbow mac is better. If someone has less space and more money, the smaller but pricier pasta is a good option. Use fuel to cook each the same amount of time, then let the macaroni soak in the boiled water longer until soft to make cooking costs comparable.

I have lots of pasta shapes taking up space. As I go along, replacing those with spaghetti. You can get about 30 lbs spaghetti into a 5 gallon bucket, no mylar needed.

Classico Organic spaghetti sauce (2 pack) at Costco comes in quart Mason jars that can be recycled for free. You will need to buy canning lids. Don’t reuse the original top.

@@colleenj225 I went to buy 5 gallon mylar bags online and got a shock seeing 5 bags going for $35.00 to $60.00. Doing it without mylar bags would be a lot cheaper.

Jars are reusable though. It's a storage source that the jar can be reused for canning or other storage. In the long run jars are better than mylar in a total shtf situation because of reusability

It really is a lot easier than you think and a lot cheaper to start prepping. I am on a fixed income due to disability and I was very worried about how much it would cost. I always did shop the sales and I simply increased that to start prepping. It did cost a small amount more at the start, BUT once you get going it actually SAVES money, and I'll explain how. First of all if money is a concern then shop the sales!!! Every week I go thru the grocery flyers online, and I make a list of items I am interested in from each store. Usually it's 6-8 items from each one. Then I figure out how many of them I need for my regular groceries, and add a couple to that. Now grocery sales tend to rotate aprox every 3 months with super sales every 6. For example spaghetti sauce. When on sale I buy what I need for my family for 3 months and add a couple for my stores. If it is a super sale I may buy enough for 6 months and add as many extra as I can. Once you have been doing this for a while you will discover your grocery bill actually goes DOWN because you are buying everything at the SALE price. Using the same example, the type of spaghetti sauce we like is usually $2.99 (Canadian dollars here). One of the bargain grocery stores had them on sale for $1.25. I bought 16 jars. 12 were for our regular use, and 4 were planned for prepping. I kept a couple in my normal pantry and the rest into the overflow. Now the next time I see them on sale I will do the same thing. That way it never costs me $2.99!! If you don't usually shop the sales very much this can save you money AND allow you to stock up using less money than you did for weekly shopping before!! As for the tools you need or are helpful, check out the thrift and second hand stores in your area. I have a lot of mason jars I have bought at a Salvation army thrift store for $0.10ea, and I got my vacuum sealer at one as well for $5 I believe. Thrift stores are a great place to get a lot of prepping items at a low cost!!

Great tip sister, another good tip is buying the supermarkets own dirt cheap products instead of any famous brands, like in Aldi or Lidl their own pasta sauce costs only 89 CENTS while same size jar from D0lmio exact same ingredients costs 2,99 euro. So along with chasing the sales try hunt the store brands for stuff u can't find at farmers markets. Large jar of olives in brine store brand 80 cents while a tiny jar of olives with a famous brand name 4,99 same with everything else. Also stock up rice, noodles and potatoes in bulky bags from Asian stores etc. Fruit buy frozen bags outside their season (if the can be frozen, pricey fruit like raspberries or blueberries especially. You can boil water for pasta add the pasta stir take it off the heat cover with a lod and it will cook without using your fuel up . Tiny shells , elbow macaroni, angel hair spaghetti all cook fast . One of my favorite is pastina which is great when your stomach is sick. Use some of the salted water and in the bowl and it will sooth your stomach

I learned that from my older brother years ago. Bring the pan to a boil and then turn off and leave for (I think it was 15 minutes), the pasta cooks in the heated water, no need to waste money/fuel keeping the water hot,

When the gas prices here doubled, my gf started leaving the pasta in water for an hour. It softens so much that it's limp. Then she uses very little gas to heat it. Barely needs to boil

I do my crackers, dehydrated vegetables, rice, beans etc the same way. According to my wife, I've gotten out of control with my food preservation. Jokingly, i told her 'then don't come to me when your hungry'. Lol...

This is a great idea for everyone, thank you. I've been saving my pasta sauce jars and lids to do this very thing for family members who are on tight budgets and trying to prep. Adding the meat and veggies to go with each has given me some great ideas. 😀

Try restaurant supply stores like US grocery. I found 20 lbs boxes of spaghetti, linguini and elbow macaroni for less than $20 each a few month's ago

I stored my pasta in 5 gallon buckets with 5 gallon mylar bags sealed with a couple of 2000cc oxygen absorbers in them. I do the same thing with rice. The oldest rice have eaten that I stored in my pantry was 11 years old and I'm telling you, I couldn't tell the difference between the 11 year old rice and brand new store bought. It works.

I do this with my leftover 2 liter soda bottles. I fill them with beans, rice or pasta. An oxygen absorber in first them fill with dry food of my choice and add another oxygen absorber toward the top. Fill as full as possible then add the cap. Of course I rinsed out and let them dry thoroughly before filling them. It frees up my glass jars for actual canning. I also use gallon water jugs etc.

I've been prepping for some time now but I absolutely LOVE these basic videos. After you've been at this awhile you tend to get wrapped up in more "sophisticated", but certainly more complicated, ways of doing things & it's awesome to have a reminder that we don't need to "remake the wheel"...that quick & easy basic methods are often just as effective, if not moreso, than the more complicated ways & are often HUGE timesavers!

I agree! Also when new preppers think they have to have freeze dried foods or MRES, the expense becomes a barrier to preparing.

Money is already very tight for most so staring down a $3000+ investment for a 1 yr supply of 25yr foods for just ONE person can be VERY intimidating & depressing & can cause some people to give up before they even get started. Rudy's "Prepping 101" videos make survival on a budget realistic...especially when you can take costs down even more by employing his tip to recycle free, empty 20 oz & 2 liter soda bottles or jars other things came in as containers for this method instead of needing to lay out cash you may not have in order to get the Mason jars.

@@bigdawgz4530 Yup, a friend is giving me 1 gallon drink plastic. Rinse and dry again, store rice (what I have). I buy salt in bulk, store in plastic.

Pasta is a wonderful staple for sure. Also, you can boil for a few minutes and then out the lid on for 10 min and it cooks perfectly. Uses way less fuel.

Amazon has excellent canned foods in bulk. I got tuna, beef stew, chicken n dumplings, spam, etc in bulk. Not expensive and a great resource for preppers

Some of the first things I ever stocked as pasta of ever size , shape and color. Grandkids like tricolor pasta. I started out loud and proud with vacuum sealing, 5 gallon pails and Mylar bags with o2 absorbers , then came rice, then dry beans of every variety. Flor, sugar . All with vacuum packing some and / or mylar and o2 absorbers in 5 gallon buckets.

To do multiple jars, I bought a vacuum chamber from Amazon and a 2-stage vacuum pump from Harbor Freight. I can vacuum seal five jars at a time.

Hey Rudy...something you might want to try. I have a Foodsaver with jar attachments to vacuum seal in jars. But because I like to be able to seal jars of dried goods without electricity, a Brake Bleeder (like you use on car brakes) and the jar attachment works better to vacuum seal than the electric foodsaver - It works great

Protip: IF you have access to dark glass, it protects even better from sunlight. (some people have dark brown or emerald colored glass)

Save your pasta sauce glass jars. Don't ever get rid of a glass jar. (Regular mouth Mason jar lids will fit some of these.) Put an Oxygen absorber in it and even the original lid that comes with the jar will reseal.

I use a lot of medicinal teas. I have saved all of my Classico pasta jars and they are full of tea bags . Probably 25 different types. These jars also have the measurements on the side if you need.

I store very few things in glass. I do have some home canned, but accidents happen, and then you have lost it and glass shards. Also, if you store in an unheated area, be aware of winter temps, freezing causes expansion, cans will possibly rupture

I pulled a box of elbow macaroni out of the back of a shelf on our farm last year. The date on it was 1997..making it easily 25 years old. I cooked it and made mac & cheese with it. Tasted fine. Unless you want to keep mice and moisture out of your macaroni...just leave it in the box I say.

Literally did this last week … I just use my vacuum sealer attachments for my canning jars … super expensive here to buy because I only buy organic and they charge $3 for a super small bag of organic store brand but still a good investment !!! I vacuum seal everything in canning jars … I did organic popcorn kernels last week as well since they were 50% off each bag !!!

For me I never had a problem … but the lids are made now are garbage so you need to buy forjars brand or use the older boxes of lids that actually hold a seal…if the environment is good I haven’t had any issues … can do both if you want for extra back up

I use a brake bleeder to vacuum seal the jars vs my vacuum sealer…saves the motor…and cheap on Amazon. Paid 20 dollars for the kit 😉

Thanks AP. I put up pasta and rice today. It's a great feeling knowing that there is food I can use years down the line. My next project is canning more dry beans. I've got 4 or 5 loads ready to go except for sterilizing the jars. I do that right before canning so they are less likely to have airborne toxins and other nasties in them. I know you don't have to sterilize before pressure canning but I feel safer doing it. I also use a sieve on pasta and beans to get rid of any bug eggs. I know, extra protein right. But if a bug has laid eggs then it has also done other things. I have an adversion to eating poop of any kind. Much Love

@@johnnyfinance In my research I have found that if you are using O2 absorbers or vacuum sealing it is not necessary to freeze. After 12 to14 days everything will die without oxygen. Freezing also introduces moisture, during the thaw process it will absorb moisture from the air, vacuum sealing with moisture is a setup for BOTULISM.

I do add a couple of bay leaves to each jar before adding the O2 absorber, one at the bottom and one almost at the top. But like I said it's not the eggs that I'm concerned over. It's the bug poop. @@destinyandpurpose I freeze for 3 days then leave it out for at least 3 days too thaw and dry I put up rice once without freezing and I had bugs hatch and ruin it using oxygen absorbers won't always remove all the oxygen.

You know Rudy I don't think you even have to go to that much trouble for storing pasta. If you think about it pasta is just a dried mixture of flour and water. Water is always the problem when storing food. I haven't done anything special with my pasta. Still in their original packaging. I just store the pasta in a dry cool area in vermin proof containers. Some of it is over ten years old and still as good as the day that I bought it. As far as I can tell if you store pasta properly without going to the trouble of putting it into mason jars it basically lasts forever. It works for me so I'll keep doing it my way. Thanks for the video anyways. I do the same thing with all my dried goods. Just store it in a vermin proof container in a cool dry area. Personally I couldn't afford all the mason jars I would need to store all my dried goods. Let you all know in ten years how it turned out. :)

I basically did the same. But I froze the pasta in the freezer, let it 'dry' for a few days, transferred to BPA free freezer/storage ziplock bags, and put all the bags in a plastic container with a top. I'm not aiming for 25 years. My goal is to have enough food for 1 to 5 years. Maybe I should add some bay leaves to keep other pests from getting too interested.

I have a good variety of pastas in my stash plus a variety of things to add to it. I put mine in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers then put those in buckets and totes

AP, I think that we could be well past the point of no return, but it isn't too late for people to start prepping, NEVER too late, for as long as there are goods/items available. If everyone preps some or a little, it will help a lot! Even if you are a late prepper do all you can! A little food is better than none and we can always barter. Some people may have not prepped a lot because they were late but maybe they will have stuff other people may need. Barter with it.

We are so spoiled in Europe and North America! I have friends from Nigeria spending the summer with me. EVERY DAY they eat rice and beans with hotsauce and Bell peppers! Even here! The same thing every day! Yes they are trying our foods too and especially fruits that they have only seen in movies. But when they go home it will be rice and beans. And occasionally fish or fruit. ALL we really need to survive on is rice and beans.. and fish once or twice per week... like Africa, India, China, Central America. And stock canned sardines for omegas.

If you fill the jars hot out of the oven and seal fast the glass cooling creates vacuum and seals the lids better

I would add pasta strictly as a "it will store a long time and keep you from starving" food. I'd rather focus on far more nutritious and healthy food, but past is better than nothing and will store for decades.

I use the FoodSave lid ( to vacuum seal) and a plain-ole auto brake bleeder. I put the lid on, then the foodsaver vacuum sealer lid, and the hose of the brake bleeder - quarts to 15 lbs and they are completely vacuum sealed.

If you use a Foodsaver on pasta and vacuum in a plastic bag, the sharp edges can poke a hole in the plastic. I had to double vacuum some of my dry pasta in bags. Live and learn!

I fill up my jars as full as I can and then put in the oxygen absorber on top and quickly put the lid on. The more empty space allowed at the top, the more o2 that needs to be absorbed. Also, when you take an absorber out of the plastic bag, quickly close the bag and push any extra air out to keep the absorbers from absorbing O2 and becoming hard and unusable.

I've never used an oxygen absorber. Would you have to use more of them in the case if the pasta has a hole in it like macaroni, penne, mostacioli? I'm thinking that there would be more places for air to be. I might be overthinking but I have literally no clue how to gage this.

While you're at it, add a teaspoon of salt. Instead of adding salt to the boil water to cook the pasta it'll already be in there.

I agree, I have been storing pasta for over 20 years in large 1 gallon containers that I pick up from restaurants, containers that they had got their bulk basil, garlic powders, etc in.... I love rice too, but pasta just hits the hole in your stomach😊

Great Info for newbies. 👍 I wish I could eat pasta. I can't. But I still store it for other people. I grow wheat, I dont eat it. Beans would be my recommended "store first" item. Healthier, filling, and still very cheap. ND and SD are having a great grow season, so beans should stay down in price for a while longer. Cheap jars for dry storage at Dollar General. Haven't used them for wet canning, so no clue if they are good for that. You forgot to remind New prep people to rotate their pantry with the new stuff they bring in, and keep it fresh for as long as possible.
