Need a Long Term Water Storage Preserver? So you hear all over the internet to use some sort of water preserver when storing water long term. Say you have some five gallon water containers and you want to store water for SHTF/Natural Disaster/Emergency/World War 3/Nuclear Attack/EMP/Economic Collapse/Etc. You might feel pressured to use a water preserver. All these prepper sites and doomsday sites have you worried. If you don't use it you could sip your first sweet sip from you stored water and wham! You got the shitz and are gonna die! Not so fast doomsday site, lets take a long hard look at the science here. So your telling me if someone buys a new container, cleans it out with say Dawn soap, rinses it out, fills it with water they just bought at the store (I like spring water), then screws on the cap and stores it in a cool dry place they need some unicorn urine to save it long term? I am calling bullshit. Particularly when...CLICK LINK TO CONTINUE READING

Back in the day 60s-70s (early 70s) the military taught us 2 drops of bleach per gallon of water and you're safe from anything!

True, but liquid bleach does not store long. It breaks down quickly. That is the only downside, cannot really stock up on it, etc.

@@CaptainBerz Maybe that's the point. I'm just investigating this issue but your comment makes me wonder if the real purpose of the bleach is to ensure any bacteria in the container was killed at the beginning. Then the bleach breaks down in the sealed container.

I have a set of 55-gallon water barrels that have been stored for 5 years and another set of them that have been stored for 10 years. I have not had problems with either of them. I annually test mine with the same water test kit that you used. I just filled mine with tap water using a food-grade hose attached to my sink faucet. The only time I recommend using water conditioners is if you do not have access to a city water supply where the water has already been treated.

It's water! I've tried for years to tell these prep nerds that insist on spending big money on water storage, that it's WATER!!! It doesn't GO bad. If you start with good water, and you store it in a way that will prevent it from becoming contaminated, it will still be good, 100 years from now. The worst that could happen is that it might taste stale. If that happens, pour it back and forth from one container to another. Keeping about a foot distance between the two containers. This will aerate the water, and it will not taste stale.

I had a good clean proper water container filled with clean city tap water (5 gallons) that ended up getting stored in a cool light free place for over a year. When I got back to it it tasted slightly stale, nothing else. I drank a full glass, and never got sick, let alone die, from it. As far as I can tell proper storage is the biggest key to long term water storage.

If you have a cistern, get one of those bubblers with hoes, with a air stone used in fish tanks, and bubble your water to keep it fresh, it might cost only 20 bucks. And only use 20 watts per hour. So it could easily keep fresh thousands of gallons underground in a tank.

Was thinking the same. Bacteria needs 3 things to grow, Food, Water Heat Take one of these out and they cant grow new bacteria. So if you use clean water there should not be something in it to eat. I use a glass water bottle in my car for drinking. Sometimes that water is in it for a few months and still have no problems drinking it.

I keep a big berkey with a clear berkey as a backup which I plan on using if my well goes dry... I've also got a covered cistern on my property which hasn't been used since the seventies (still have a rope and pulley with a bucket on it in the barn). There's also a small river that meanders it's way through my property, which my neighbors swear is clean but since I don't desire the effects of dysentery I'd filter it as carefully as possible. My bug out bag has a lifesaver 6000 filter, as well as lifestraw connected to my camelback because I'm a firm believer in backing up my equipment. As for actual water storage, I'm afraid that other than a couple ten gallon water bottles in the bathroom closet (for flushing the toilet if the plumbing goes out) my storage of potable water is almost non-existent.

The water preservatives are good for people who can't or won't measure chlorine. If the container and water is clean going in and the container remains sealed, your good to go indefinitely. I keep a berkey as a backup in case someday municipal water was not available. Another backup is powdered chlorine like they use in swimming pools. It lasts indefinitely, unlike liquid chlorine which is only good for one year.

A good practice that we use is to use 55 gal Food Grade barrels. (new ones if you don't want what was stored in them to leach into your water) We purchased ones that stored pickels and that pickle flavor/smell leached into the water BUT it is still perfectly safe and the barrels will be cheaper. Then, disinfect the barrels with the proper bleach solution and rinse. Then fill the barrels for long term storage. Now, if the SHTF and it's time to begin using the water for drinking or cooking, add 1/4 teaspoon of calcium hypochlorite to the 55 gal drum and shake and let sit overnight. Then you are good to go. You can even filter it with a carbon filter IF the faint smell of chlorine is a problem.

In the past, I used milk jugs and followed your process. When I went to visited the basement’s cool dry shelves where I stored gallons, I observed every one of them leaked out because they are not meant for long term. This was disconcerting; however, it happened. I now wash, bleach, and dry heavier plastic jars and seal them, and when I think the time is ripe, I’ll quickly fills the gallons and gallons I need from the city tap. Drinking water that hasn’t been water bathed (sterilized) is not healthy because of countless Protozoa content which could and will develop. Just my personal opinion. I can’t afford the glass canning jars, and they don’t hold much water anyway. If SHTF I can quickly fill the enormous containers I’ve prepared. Again, just my opinion. Thanks and have a great day.

What about rinsing water container with a little bleach? Seems safer to use a little pad of charcoal when you use it. Ya know, the ones from compost lids or even , in apinch, wood fire charcoal? Just keep sanitized gauze or cotton and put in a glass jar with your water storage. I always keep activated charcoal as first aid.

If you’re interested in long-term storage, then why’d transfer the water from the store-bought containers into another container? Is it just to minimize the footprint because if there is no real reason, just by the water and put it on the shelf. I have about 25 to 30 gallons of water stored in my basement.

Might be overkill, might not be... I use tap water in a vinegar cleaned (and thoroughly rinsed) container. Then I add a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide (H202) to hyper oxygenate the water... main points = clean water / clean container / no contamination / proper storage.

Hate to break it to you, but "spring water" from most groceries may only have one drop of spring water in the entire tank, and the rest is simply tap water. Water is not regulated and companies are allowed to call something as "spring water" if it at least contains one drop

I bought 2 reliance brand water containers back in 1999 for the Y2K scare. Added 5 gallons of city tap water to them last year. Within a year, the city water ate through the plastic. Don't know where I went wrong, but this next time around, I'm going with this brand and spring water from a local spring water company. I'm guessing some additive to the water ate the plastic away. A little lesson to learn from for somebody. And hell no do I drink city tap water. And one more thing.. Go Cubs!

(1) degrease your BPA free container - dish soap/water, then rinse till it clears up. (2) disinfect container (if using standard bleach about a capful per 1-2 quarts)... don't just rinse it... fill container halfway with diluted bleach and let sit for 30 min then turn upside down and do other half -- bleach is a slow contact killing agent, then rinse well with clean city or drinking water, (3) let dry (wear clean nitrile gloves for each step and never let anything touch cap/opening of container besides clean gloves). The container is the biggest part of keeping the water clean. If not adding a preservative, have some QC step like the test shown in this video before drinking.

those jugs are about the only "military grade" item that is actually good. I've been in the marines for 5 years, and the jugs we have are the same, just colored tan. They are practically indestructable, I've seen these things take beating after beating, being dropped from 5 ft or higher, stepped on, thrown around, and just generally abused, and despite how old most of them are, they don't seem to break. These jugs will not let you down

Absolutely! Plastic is not a good thing to store water in long-term. We store water in glass jugs that we reuse from Carlo & Rossi $2-Buck-Chuck-style wine. In fact, we also reuse glass bottles and fill them from the tap instead of buying bottles of water. My favorite every day "water bottle" is a large Lea & Perrins Worcestershire bottle. Upcycling is not just for crafts.

Bob A I have been avoiding harmful chemicals my entire life and will continue to do so. The glass jugs we use are very thick, but not so heavy we can't pour wine and water out of them We have much larger carboys used to make beer, too. We keep them filled with water between batches, for emergencies. It's a good plan.
