A woman calls a radio show.
LONG TIME LISTENER, FIRST TIME CALLER is used with permission from Nora Kirkpatrick. Learn more at norakirkpatric....
Nan is a sexually repressed housewife living in a small town in the middle of the Californian desert. She spends her days cleaning and wiling away the hours at her home, and her evenings at dinner with her husband, who seems more interested in talking back to game shows than talking to his wife.
But when she's cleaning out the room of her recently deceased mother-in-law Rosie, she discovers a mysterious talk show on Rosie's old transistor radio. Filled with questions of her own -- on her marriage, existence and life's purpose in the face of a vast universe -- she calls in, and the answer sets off a chain of thoughts that will change her life.
Written and directed by Nora Kirkpatrick, this charming and eccentric existential dramedy tackles the big questions in life, as a bored housewife seeks meaning underneath the stultifying weight of domestic routine, only to discover herself. What distinguishes the story from other narratives in the same vein is its storytelling's relative economy and minimalism, as well as a gently oddball visual evocation of dustbin desert Americana.
With an earthy, warm yet faded color palette and striking production design, Nan exists in a world that feels out-of-time, like a pocket of the country forgotten by modernity, including its pace, progress and ideas. Wide master shots are emphasized, both remarkable to look at and a stark visual representation of how marginal of a presence that Nan feels in this world.
This sense of existential suspension is bolstered by the dissatisfying scenes of domestic life with Nan's husband. Nan's husband isn't necessarily mean; he's just not quite there. The storytelling establishes these dynamics with few scenes and lines of dialogue, though what discussion is there leans on the dry, absurdist side. The approach is less tightly connected psychological immersion and more a series of related photographs of key moments, tied together by character, mood and whimsy.
The film's first half sets up mood and atmosphere, but it gains momentum when Nan tunes in to the station and show that Rosie listened to, with its strangely compelling sense of folksy wisdom and cosmic authority. The answers and advice she gets about her marital ambivalence are both hilariously retro ("lingerie") and gnomically cosmic.
Watching actor Breeda Wool as Nan attempt to follow up on this advice is both a fine study in subtle physical comedy and a beautiful portrayal of a woman coming alive to her own buried wishes and yearnings. Her attempts to reach her distant husband set off a strange set of small yet weirdly resonant events, including one that reminds her of the grief she still holds for her mother-in-law's passing -- and an opportunity for strange grace to work itself in her life.
Beguiling, unconventional and poetic, LONG TIME LISTENER, FIRST TIME CALLER is bookended by two riffs on a uniquely mesmerizing image, one whose resonance transforms with Nan's shift in character, as well as the film's compelling harmonies of story, image and ideas. Tenuous but intriguing connections are made for Nan as Rosie's final "gift" to her arrives, giving Nan the courage of her convictions and the meaning of freedom. Is it fate? Coincidence? Or does it even matter? Whatever it is, it captures our yearning for meaning in an often absurd world and asks us to look more closely for the hidden connections in our own lives.

Netflixs' offerings are pretty abysmal. I remember the good ol' days, approx 2008 to 2012, when I had 200 indie, older, rare, obscure, and otherwise interesting and quality films (many Horror even) in my queue. It's just dumbed down lowest common denominator and pseudo-intelligent stuff for the masses nowadays. Like that Spanish movie everyone was raving about a year ago with the food that went down all those levels - everyone said how deep and profound it was but it was one-note, requiring zero thought, introspection or introspection.

@Honu Kelekona it's only overrated if you go just for the sake of traveling by getting excited just because other people doing the same. But if you travel because you want to and at some selective destinations where crowd is lesser and place in full of nature , beaches , mountains and in western countries. Then you would certainly not feel overrated. Specially if you have a good money where you can afford good Flights , Hostels and Etc then traveling is surely fun and enriching. So I suggest you to travel for 15 days in each 3 months. Means 4 Trip in a year. Then you would certainly feel fresh and your life would seems like in proper balance.

She realises from the radio show that Rosie never got free, just worked and cooked dinner all her life. So she is not making the same mistake, she is off to see those roadside attractions, and to find a potent and caring man, who is more interested in a woman than a TV show. So she is driving down the freedom freeway on Rosie's schooter. Good one. (This helps me to appreciate my life, my wonderful wife of 20 years and our happiness with our 3 kids. True luck. I think the husband doesn’t know how to love. He probably saw this with his own father, hence, this is why Rosie left. He has given his wife the life his mother had. Never right, someone else is better, yet, he keeps trying but to no avail.

@@jeffsmith9384 "For better or worse"... but how far do you go before you realise that there is no fixing a situation? Their wedding day was probably the high-point and the relationship has steadily gone down hill since. Some people stay together more from habit and convenience than anything else. I think Beth's comment makes plenty of sense, you just concentrated on how the wounded son may feel... If you follow the message within the story, the son had actually moved on and had already cut the link between his present circumstances and the past life of his mother, as is evident in the fact that he was ready to give her things away. Nan was clearly the one who stayed home and looked after her mother-in-law, probably nursed her too. The loss was more deeply felt by her as she showed throughout the entire 17 minutes of this short.

And do not be discouraged if certain plan or way do not work out, that's just how it is in life. With this change or with anything else. Wow. This touched my heart. So, I watched it twice and it cleared up some questions. Spoiler alert since it's so new. Scroll down. It seems that Nan was closer to her MIL (Rosie) than Rosie's own son (Nan's husband). A photo with the 2 of them was on the lady's nightstand and I saw no photo of her son. So, Nan is in mourning for Rosie. The man did not want to go into the room and deal with any if his mother's stuff. He called charity to come get her stuff out without even saving 1 item for himself. The radio: It was breaking down for a while, and instead of sharing that with her son, Rosie ordered a new one without saying anything. The new radio came in the mail just in time for Nan to find out that Rosie used to call into the same show she called to. In the recorded conversation with the radio host, Nan learns about Rosie's regrets about not have a more interesting life other than working and sitting around the house. So, Nan laughs because Rosie's message reached her. I don't know for sure that Nan left her husband on a scooter and with none of her belongings. I just think she decided to not stay cooped up in the house anymore, and she will probably get some fresh air and go out everyday from now on. About the husband: I can't tell if the man is mourning for his mother by staying inside himself or if he doesn't really love/like his wife. But, he watches the game show on TV every night and gets 0 question correctly but is angry at the people saying correct answers. He seems to have an inferiority complex. Nan does not even show off her knowledge to him but her intelligence is obvious. Is that one of the reasons he is so distant? Maybe. He does not act loving to her. That's all I can see. Made me think.

There is a feeling that I cannot explain. It lives at the brink of day, as the first glint of sunlight touches the dark horizon. It plays in the golden haze of summer dusk, and along the edge of a deserted winter beach. It's the smell after a hard rain, a rose just before it opens. A moment when time can break from all reality, and where your heart slips free from any worry. A dream where everything is new, and worth remembering.

Reminds me of Kramer telling Jerry about marriage. "And you can forget about watching TV at the dinner-table. Know why? Because that's DINNER TIME!And you know what you do at dinner time? YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR DAY! OH, how'd your day go? My day went like this, let's talk about our day! It's a PRISON, Jerry!"

I'm sorry for anyone that is going through this in their marriage. The fact the most exciting thing in this women's life is to listen to some old creep listening to women talking about their orgasms as he touches himself in his basement, is really sad.

I really want that riding device. I could benefit from that. The actress did a wonderful job. The character's life was ruled by fear. She is married to a man that she is afraid to be honest with. The husband doesn't appear to be happy. He doesn't see what his wife needs. Some men have low libidos. He doesn't appear fulfilled in life. He is focused on cursing at the tv shows. I think the wife would feel better if she had purpose other than waiting for her husband to come home from work. She appears intelligent and skilled. If she had a career it would help her. The couple need to consider counseling and learn how to communicate with one another. I find it very interesting how some married people have weak communication skills of sexual needs.

God, these films make me feel like there's more to life. Or maybe they're a glimpse into a life that I wish could be reality. I don't know, but they truly inspire a spark within me. It fades away, unfortunately, and I am just left with a memorable story. Still, glad they exist, even if for a moment of fantasy.

The woman in this short is a soul with no one to appreciate the love and life within herself with no place to go, because where she lives is not really her home, it is just a place she is expected to clean and cook dinner with no appreciation. It causes me to wonder how she ended up with a man who watches the television shouting with no real conversation with her, then he throws the dishes in the sink for her to clean. When she asked this man if he loves her, he says yes, however the body language of both of them show otherwise. The postman feels sorry for her as though he knows something that he cannot bring himself to tell. Instead of going on a scooter away from him, she should have been flying away, to soar to any adventure she could find with people who will listen to her like the man on the radio.
