The Tehachapi Pass is a mountain pass in California connecting the San Joaquin Valley with the Mojave Desert. The name is derived from the Kawaiisu word for "Hard Climb", and apt description for the area. The Southern Pacific constructed a railroad through the area in 1876, which has become world famous with railroaders and railfans due to it's steep grades, impressive engineering, and spectacular views.
Today the railroad is part of the Union Pacific Mojave Subdivision, and is used by both Union Pacific and BNSF. This scene shows a northbound BNSF freight train descending the railroad between Cliff and Caliente, a distance of a little over 10 miles.
