Formally, it is three separate high-speed line - original Rome-Firenze (3kV and 250km/h), amazing Firenze-Bologna (mostly in tunnels) and then Bologna-Milano in the plains of Northern Italy. This direct Rome-Milano non-stop service is very special, though in the future Firenze will also get a separate thru-running high-speed (AV) station and tunnel bypass.
@RailRelaxation Жыл бұрын
@zzelen this new part of the line in Firenze will reduce the travel time even more. I read that on January this year they launched a non stop train between Rome Tiburtina and Milan Rogoredo with travel time 2h45min.
@ZvonimirZelenika Жыл бұрын
@@RailRelaxation Yes, lots of time is lost getting out of Rome and into Milano, this is where most time savings can be found. Speeding up from 250km/h to 300km/h does not bring as much benefits as avoiding slow sections with speeds around/under 100km/h.
@maxart3392 Жыл бұрын
@@RailRelaxation Well, if you count this one between Tiburtina and Rogoredo, it would also be around 2:45 (or even slightly less). However, if the train could run the whole route at maximum allowed speed, it would shave off at least 10 minutes of travel time. Unfortunately it often has to slow down because of other slower trains, especially between Rome and Florence, where the line is also used by intercity and night trains (which don't go any faster than 200 km/h) and between Valdarno and Florence also by even slower regional trains, as they also use S. Donato tunnel (if this hasn't changed recently). All the area around Florence is a bottleneck.

I used to travel between Rome and Venice Mestre every 2 weeks, night or day depending on the train I was taking, and the Rome - Orte segment was always via the Direttissima. When taking the EC30 Romulus (Rome - Vienna) train, I always stood at the back of the train where you could have the same view as here. This and the other HS lines Florence - Bologna - Milan are a unique masterpiece of engineering, notwithstanding the typical Italian bureaucracy and corruption issues that threw countless wrenches into the plan, design and construction of this backbone. These lines are the one example of High Speed / High Capacity (Alta Velocità / Alta Capacità or AV/AC) by which one can operate HS trains, conventional speed trains and freight with a 25 tonne axle load. No other country has designed its HS lines like this.

Very beatiful video. The part between Roma and Firenze Rifredi is very important because we can understand because the train covered it in 1 h and 32 minutes instead of 1 h. 20 minutes. It happens because there is a lot of traffic in the line at the peak time. Usually trains in the evening after 8 PM cover Roma-Firenze Rifredi in 1 h. 20 minutes. This the reason because AV train could cover Roma-Milano in 2h. 50 minutes but in timetable are 2 h. 59 minutes.

What do you mean "far better", we Italians have spent over 50 billion euros for the promise of a 300km/h high speed train, a direct trip between Milan and Rome travels at an average of 190Km/h. The French Paris to Lion travels at an average of 240km/h. Obviosly the Italian project is incomplete and most probabily will always remain that way, high speed is not viable if the people are not willing to pay the higher ticket prices. maintenance costs increase esponetially with the increase of speed.

How accurate is the 'odometer'? We are entering the San Donato tunnel (around the 1:18:20 time mark) at around 241km on the odometer, the tunnel should be close to 11km, so shouldn't the odometer read about 252km when we exit the tunnel (1:23:40), but it reads 244.6. Now I understand that GPS probably isn't working in tunnels that go through mountains, but I did expect to see some bump is distance shortly after we exited the tunnel... Otherwise great video!

@2Fast4Mellow In the tunnels the GPS connection is interrupted, so with the lines full of tunnels the data is less accurate than in others.
