considering how much time and chemicals were used, it would have taken less time and lot safer preventing disc/bearing contamination, just remove the cassettes from the hub and dunk in a degreaser. once all cleaned, dry and spray protection before installing the cassette back on the hub. cleaning on it's side or upright also has potential to get chemical on the carbon wheels and tire.

Basically, I guess it saves me time elsewhere is the way I look at it and I love the "feel." Anyway, I think you are right about the cassette. Mine seems to say it is coated in aluminum and nickel chrome. I'm willing to bet those have worn off and it is getting to the steel underneath and that is what is rusting. @KarlosEPM3 жыл бұрын
I mix a soft wax with the paraffin so that it isn't too brittle and therefore keeps the drivetrain quiter for longer. But yeah, immersion is better than commercial drip-on waxes. In the past, however, I managed to dissolve the wax into paint thinner and applied the mix to the mounted chain. The paint thinner evaporated over night and I had a freshly waxed chain without taking it off the bike. In any case... wax is by far my favorite chain lube. Cheers!
@JoLe19913 жыл бұрын
@@KarlosEPM yes also tried to dissolve wax with strong solvents but it takes a long time to evaporate and you don't get nearly as much wax in the chain as with immersion bathing. honestly I had no issue with the wax being too brittle. I just use candle-grade pellets and add a bit of dry lubricant (0.1 micron WS2). other people use 1.6 micron ptfe powder. that in particular seems to add plasticity to the wax.
@KarlosEPM3 жыл бұрын
@@JoLe1991 Interesting. It never crossed my mind that the additives would prevent pure paraffin from quickly flaking off. Thanks for your reply!
@JoLe19913 жыл бұрын
@@KarlosEPM actually pure paraffin wax is not great at preventing wear on your chain. You can see laboratory wear tests of different chain lubricants, and pure wax lubes (such as squirt lube) don't protect agains wear very well... for that reason alone it's mandatory to add a dry lubricant, and the best ones are clearly ptfe and ws2, both as fine as possible. on my emtb I do 150km on average before I rewax the chain, possibly it lasts longer when using PTFE than WS2. At 150km the chain starts to rattle slightly, a sign of a lack of wax inside the rollers. With the connex chain link it's a piece of cake to take off the chain from the bike, in my opinion an absolute necessity for chain waxing.

Why would you not do that? Isn't the lock ring a relatively inexpensive wear item anyway?

Clothes washing liquid is definitely better. Dish washing degrease much less. @@RoderickGMacLeod dishwashing liquids should be safe for skin, but really effective degreaser doesn't have to. It damages skin if you don' t apply any hand cream after use, but it's very effective.
