Remember, this isn’t a selection. This is just reporting Billboard’s stats and not an opinion. That being said, remember some albums (Abbey Road for a likely example) had their #1 period spread over multiple years (1969-1970), reducing its potential for placement in this video.

Soundtracks were the only consistent albums. The Beatles albums in the UK were totally different to the Beatles albums in the USA. Same with the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, pretty much everyone.
@hollstrom6 ай бұрын
It doesn't necessarily say something about actual sales. For example, Beatles LPs and those of other rock acts sold high amounts in very short time, which bizarrely restricted the time they spent at no. 1. The soundtracks were generally bought by older generation people who had the money to invest in all kinds of soundtrack LPs. These sales were usually spread over long periods of time.

@hollstrom RIAA awarded Gold Records to singles that sold a million copies. For albums it was a million DOLLARS' worth of albums, not a million copies. Singles far outsold albums. An album selling a million copies was rare.

Since Sgt Pepper was really the first rock album that was designed as a complete work to be listened to from start to finish, it was still sort of “alternative” at the time. Dont forget, up to the moment it was released, the world knew the Beatles as 4 fun guys from Liverpool with mop tops and played 3 minute toe tapping ditties. Sgt Pepper turned them into bonafide, serious artists and a lit of people didn’t quite know what to think.

Says something about Rumours is that it's the ONLY album to achieve more than a half year on the charts at #1 in this list. I think it also had some time in an adjacent year TOO - just not the longest of that year. Thriller, on the other hand, and a GIANT spike in it's sales when it was #1.

billboard chart rules since 2016, it's been different since they counted streams. That's why popular albums on the billboard 200, such as Taylor Swift or Adele, have always been on the charts from 2017 until now with a count of 1500 streams equivalent to 1 unit. It was different in the physical era, albums that left the Billboard 200 chart, no longer existed or fewer people bought the album, but they still played it at home but Billboard didn't count the CDs they played as Billboard continued to count streams in the streaming era which caused the album to always it's on the billboard 200 and will never leave the charts. Even old albums from the 1970s to the 2010s are still on the Billboard 200 because of streaming and will always be there. That's the difference between billboard charts and physical calculation systems and streaming. it's very very different.
