4 six axle engines = 24 axles - 624 total axles = 600 axles divided by 4 per car = 150 gons and four jacks [ancient term for engine]. That's a heckuva CSX train pulled by two half century old engines. You caught that kind of action a couple of days ago with another CSX and two old GP's doing the work. Nice to see old engines recycled and still working for their keep.

Years ago Conrail, later NS would run long gon trains like this from the port of Philadelphia to western PA with steel slabs.......when they got into Altoona PA they would sometimes have 3 Gevo's on the head end and 4 SD40-2's shoving hard on the rear.....I've seen this back in September 2006.

Now that's a whopper of a gondola train. With a strong economy and demand for steel up it's all hands on deck. While NS has a sizeable order in for new gons note how many Southern cars were in that consist. They're at least 40 years old and many of those old Conrails are also coming up on retirement but for now still earning revenue. Great going away shot of the NS train. The curve, signals and high tensiom towers just speak volumes. Those rebuilt CSX SD40s were like the modern day version of Charles Atlas as it hit the Xing stating "Nobody's gonna kick snow in my face!" With a welcome home from the happy animals another successful trip

I’ve been wondering how to equate train traffic to the economy. They were taking ire to be made into steel, right?
@jonglass
@jonglass 2 жыл бұрын
@@lindenshaw1986 Gondolas carry scrap and ingots. They are one of the most used railroad cars used in the steel industry. Another would be the cars you see at the beginning of the second train--the one with the CSX "square cab" locos. They are curved on top. Those cars haul coils of steel that will be later uncoiled, stamped and cut into shapes for things like car bodies or other steel shapes. I bet that if you search youtube for "turning steel coils into car bodies" you will find videos that show how that works. But gondolas are used to carry scrap, or in-process iron and steel ingots, or pipe, or I-beams, etc..

Hamilton is a rail lover dream. You have the CSX mainline, which Norfolk Southern uses to get to their mainline a few miles up the road. And a little past the signal bridge from where this video is filmed there is a southbound "directional" running track which CSX uses to get to their mainline via Sharonville and relieve congestion on the ex B&O. So Norfolk Southern uses CSX to go North. CSX uses NS directional running to head south.

Man,theres just nothing more rustic than a freight train running in the snow thru a kewl little town. Just doesnt get any better than this .....and yeah the first freight was the longest gondie train Ive ever seen. Nice video as always Brian. Still shots are excellent too

just goes to show you how much TORQUE those old EMD SD40-2’s had. on another note, listen to the difference in power output between the ET44AC DPU and thE AC4400CW! that ET is way louder!
