The sport of freeride motocross is all about progression and breaking new ground -- so it's only right that the competition at Red Bull Imagination 4.0 follows suit. Enter, the freeride draft -- team captains Robbie Maddison and Jeremy "Twitch" Stenberg faced off and made their picks to build 5-rider teams to compete head-to-head in 5 competition categories that embody the spirit of freeride. That is, after a coin flip (or two) from head judge Steven Haughelstine.
Watch Maddo and Twitch draft their teams, selecting riders like Tyler Bereman, Julien Vanstippen and Patrick Evans, before the teams returned to the Red Bull Imagination course for their final practice sessions. These sessions were all about strategy and precision, identifying which rider would compete in each category and maximizing practice time on specific parts of the challenging Red Bull Imagination 2023 course. And the sessions brought out the highs and lows of the complex and demanding sport that is freeride motocross -- including a heart-wrenching crash on one of the course's longest jumps. But, as always, the incredibly community spirit of freeriders propelled the competitors together to accomplish incredible feats to cap off practice, including a massive jump spanning 185 feet (56 meters) by Tyler Bereman.

Twitch is awesome. That dude singlehandedly made my life when I recognized him and Tex Davenport from FMX videos. They were in the FMX trailer pits at the '99 X-Games in SF... I was young and in the city on my own, and they gave me the nickname "Little Island" and brought me in with them through the competitor entrance instead of waiting in the huge line. Twitch also hooked me up with a pass to get into the X-Games via that entrance on my own from then on. Such a chill and kind group of people. I'll never forget that day, best day ever.

Come on, "going to war with our dirt bikes." If you had been to war and you wore the Red, White and Blue you would not say such childish things. I think Red Bull should go to a Spinal Cord Injury Center and see the carnage that their thrill sport really produces. They need to show parents the harsh underbelly of a sport that is just created to provide the masses with human carnage all in the name of selling energy drinks. I've lived this life from both sides of the coin. One was my six years of racing motorcycles to then spending the last 48 years in a wheelchair for my stupidity as a kid. These guys only do this sport to make money and all their false bravado is just that, false. Spend a day at one of our many spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury centers in the US before you send one of your kids out into the harsh world of Thrill Sport riding. No matter how wealthy you think you are a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury will empty your life savings before you get into the end of your first month as an SCI/TBI.

Fully disagree! I have been in a chair for 5 1/2 years with a spinal cord injury from motocross and rode for a few years after I got hurt and had some of the most fun on my dirt during that time after getting hurt and in a chair. These guys do it for the love riding their dirt bike and enjoying the time with their friends who have the same passion! It's all about continuing on and enjoying the day to day! Term going to war, is being one with the bike on a dangerous course. The bike is apart of them!

I'm just trying to let you know what I've seen through the lenses of nearly 50 years in the chair. I've Competed with and Coached athletes with SCI at two Olympic Games and five Paralympic Games. I also hope you can benefit from all the science that individuals like me and my colleagues who've made sure that your care post SCI is the best. I was working on my Master's Degree in Ex Phys five years post SCI and I thought I knew it all. I made my life post SCI at the tip of the spear when it comes to high performance for those of us who still felt the need to be the best at everything we do in life. I hope you can have children as successful as both our sons have been. Keep living and never stop trying to stay up on the latest with urology and skin care. I get where you are coming from, but these riders would be doing what they're doing without Red Bull, without this contest, without any videos made. Some sports are dangerous. Some are extremely dangerous. An adult capable of making their own decisions can choose for themselves if they are passionate enough to take the risks. I DO agree that kids and people who don't understand the consequences shouldn't be messing around with this kind of thing. I also agree that calling it war is a bit overblown, however if you can die or be paralyzed from it then it's not fully off the mark. Hoping the rider that got hurt is doing alright
